Introduction

They called her the weakest wolf alive.

Then they rejected her on live television.

Sable Voss was the shame of Stormridge Pack until one disastrous race cost them the championship—and her fated mate, Alpha Kael Stormridge, publicly severed their bond.

That night, Sable disappeared.

Months later, she returns from the wilderness transformed.

A rare Dark Moon has awakened something ancient in her blood: a power the packs buried generations ago.

Now Sable is undefeated, untouchable, and the most dangerous racer on the circuit.

But Kael recognizes her the moment she steps onto the track.

The bond he tried to destroy is alive again.

And this time, Sable isn't coming back to beg for a place in his pack.

She's coming back to take back everything they stole from her.

Chapter 1

The stadium lights were brighter than the moon.

They always were on Championship night, but tonight they felt like they had been aimed at me on purpose. White-hot. Unforgiving. Turning every shadow into a stage and every failure into something the whole world could watch. I stood at the edge of the track with blood in my mouth and the sharp taste of iron coating my tongue. Somewhere behind me, the crowd was already chanting his name. The sound rolled through the stands like thunder that had learned how to speak.

Kael. Kael. Kael.

I did not look up. Looking up would mean seeing the giant screens, the cameras, the faces of the Stormridge Pack packed into the VIP section like a single living thing. Looking up would mean seeing him.

My mate.

My Alpha.

The man who still had not come down to the track to stand beside me.

I rolled my shoulders and spat the blood onto the dirt. The cut on the inside of my cheek was small. I had bitten down too hard during the last practice heat. It was nothing. Everything about me was nothing compared to what the rest of them could do. I had known that for years. Tonight the entire werewolf world would know it too.

The National Lunar Circuit Championship was not a race for the weak. It never had been. Packs from every territory sent their fastest, strongest, and most brutal. Stormridge had held the title for eight years. Eight years of perfect shifts, perfect strategy, perfect glory. And this year they had been forced to put me on the roster because the mate bond demanded it. Because tradition demanded that an Alpha’s fated mate stand with the pack in the finals, even if she could barely shift, even if she slowed them down, even if every trainer and elder had argued against it behind closed doors.

I had heard the arguments. Of course I had. Walls were thin when you were the pack’s shame.

A horn blared overhead. Five minutes.

My hands flexed at my sides. The track stretched out in front of me in a wide, brutal curve—part open ground, part dense forest section, part steep incline that forced runners to shift mid-stride or lose everything. The air smelled of turned earth, sweat, and the sharp electric tang of too many wolves in one place. Somewhere in the trees, the first markers glowed with faint lunar light. The race would begin in human form. It would end however the packs decided it should end. There were very few rules once the horn sounded for real.

I could feel him.

Even without looking, the mate bond sat under my ribs like a second heartbeat. Kael Stormridge. Golden. Untouchable. The kind of Alpha packs wrote songs about. The bond had always been warm when he was near, a steady pull that used to make me believe I belonged somewhere. Tonight it felt tight. Strained. As if something on his end was already bracing for impact.

I closed my eyes and tried to breathe the way the trainers had taught me. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Ignore the way my wolf refused to rise. Ignore the way my bones still felt too human, too slow, too ordinary.

A shadow fell across me.

I opened my eyes.

It was not Kael.

Elder Torren stood two paces away, tall and silver-haired, the permanent weight of the pack council resting on his shoulders like a second cloak. Kael’s father. The man who had never once called me by name when he could call me “the girl” instead.

“You will not embarrass us,” he said. No greeting. No softness. Just the words, flat and final.

I met his gaze and said nothing. There was nothing to say that would change anything.

Torren’s mouth tightened. “When the shift is required, you will shift. If you cannot, you will get out of the way. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“Do not look at my son for help. He has a pack to lead.”

The words landed harder than they should have. I kept my face still. “I understand.”

Torren held my stare for another second, then turned and walked back toward the Stormridge section without another word. The space he left behind felt colder.

I looked down at my hands. They were shaking. I curled them into fists until the shaking stopped.

Four minutes.

Around me, the other packs were finishing their final preparations. I caught fragments of conversation, laughter, the low growl of wolves already half-shifted and restless. No one spoke to me. No one from Stormridge came to stand beside me. That was how it had always been. I trained alone. I ate alone. I existed in the spaces between the real members of the pack, tolerated because the bond made me impossible to fully discard.

Until tonight.

The giant screens above the track flickered to life. Instantly the crowd noise swelled. Commentators’ voices boomed across the stadium, bright and hungry for drama.

“—and of course all eyes will be on Stormridge tonight as they attempt to secure their ninth consecutive title. Alpha Kael Stormridge remains the favorite, but there are questions surrounding the inclusion of his fated mate, Sable Voss, whose shifting ability has been widely criticized—”

I tuned the rest out. I already knew what they said about me. The entire circuit did.

Three minutes.

I finally looked for him.

Kael stood at the edge of the Stormridge platform, surrounded by the rest of the racing team. Even from this distance he was unmistakable—tall, dark-haired, the kind of presence that made people step aside without being asked. The stadium lights caught the sharp line of his jaw, the set of his shoulders. He was speaking to one of the strategists, head bent, expression unreadable. For a moment I thought he might look over. The bond pulled, sharp and sudden, as if it wanted him to.

He did not look.

Something in my chest tightened until it hurt.

I had loved him in the quiet way of someone who had never been given permission to want more. I had believed, stupidly, that the bond meant something. That one day he would stand in front of the pack and say I was enough. That the slow, careful way he sometimes spoke to me in private was the beginning of something real instead of duty.

Tonight felt like the end of that belief.

Two minutes.

A race official in black and silver approached the starting line and raised a hand. Runners began moving into position. I forced my feet to carry me forward. The dirt was packed hard under my shoes. My heart was too loud in my ears.

I took my place near the outer edge of the Stormridge formation. No one adjusted to make room for me. No one met my eyes. The wolf inside me—the weak, reluctant thing that barely ever answered—stayed silent.

One minute.

The crowd rose as one. The chanting grew louder, folding into a single roar that shook the air. On the screens, Kael’s face appeared in close-up for a second, calm and beautiful and already victorious in the eyes of everyone watching. Then the camera cut away, searching for drama, and landed on me.

I stared straight ahead.

I could feel the lens on my skin like heat.

Thirty seconds.

Somewhere behind the noise, a smaller sound reached me—the soft, familiar brush of the mate bond trying to offer comfort. It was the closest thing to a goodbye I was going to get.

I did not take it.

The final horn shattered the night.

I ran.

I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
