They Faked My Madness While My Body Rotted
Fuzzy Melissa · Completed · 6.3k Words
Introduction
My husband Preston had once sworn to stay by my side “in sickness and in health”, yet every bit of his patience had long since burned away.
At the Thanksgiving feast, my hands shook and spasmed. I knocked over the scalding gravy, drawing the judging stares of every guest at the table.
Instead of comfort, I only got Preston's undisguised revulsion.
He handed over my seat as the lady of the house to Rosalie, our young live-in nanny, ordering me to go upstairs and stop disgracing myself in front of others.
What broke my heart most was that my own son flinched from my outstretched arms and fled straight into Rosalie's embrace.
Staring at the harmonious trio before my eyes, they looked far more like a real family.
I might as well die.
Chapter 1
After giving birth to Finn, severe postpartum depression and the nerve pain left behind by a difficult delivery turned me into a walking corpse.
My husband, Preston Bellamy, who had once promised me "in sickness and in health," had finally run out of patience.
At Thanksgiving dinner, I forced my spasming hands to take the bowl of steaming-hot gravy.
I wanted to fulfill my last little duty as a wife and hostess, but I fumbled and knocked the gravy boat off the table.
The thick gravy splattered across the floor, even staining one of the guests’ dresses. Every eye at the table instantly turned toward me.
I hurriedly tried to crouch down and clean it up, but Preston frowned and caught my arm. The disgust in his eyes was impossible to hide.
He turned away, took Rosalie Marsh—the young, energetic live-in nanny—by the hand, and guided her into the seat at the head of the table that had once belonged to me.
"Helen, if you don’t even have the strength to hold a serving spoon, go back upstairs and stay in your room."
His voice remained soft, but his words were as cruel as a blade.
"Stop embarrassing yourself in front of everyone. Rosalie can handle things."
I froze.
Nearby, Finn burst into tears at the sound of the shattering dish.
I instinctively opened my arms, wanting to pull him close and comfort him, but Finn flinched in fear and turned straight into Rosalie’s arms, clutching tightly at her apron.
Rosalie gently patted his back and gave me a sympathetic smile.
"Mrs. Bellamy, let me hold him. In your current state, you’ll only make him more distressed. Go get some rest and take care of yourself."
I looked at the three of them standing together—the handsome, composed father, the gentle, perfectly normal "mother," and the quiet child clinging to her.
It was such a perfect family portrait.
And I was the monster who didn’t belong in it.
I stumbled upstairs like a defeated soldier.
I went to Preston’s study looking for pain medication. But on his desk, partially hidden from view, his MacBook was sitting there with the screen still unlocked.
The cold glow of the screen stabbed at my eyes.
It was a petition to have my parental rights terminated, ready to be filed with the court.
Every one of my emotional breakdowns had been documented in detail, and under "Attorney" was Preston’s name.
Beside the document was an open chat with his lawyer and friend. The latest message had just been sent:
[As long as Helen is around, this household will never know peace. Move this process along as fast as you can. I only wish she would just fade away quietly. That way, Finn can finally have a proper mother like Rosalie.]
I stared at those words for a long time.
Finally, my tears fell.
But I didn’t feel angry or betrayed.
I only felt deeply guilty.
He was right. Preston had been exhausted lately.
He already came home drained from his demanding job, only to face a wife who could break down at any moment, who constantly smelled of medication, and who could barely take care of her own child.
He had brought Rosalie in at first simply to help me shoulder the burden.
But somewhere along the way, he had realized that without me, this family actually functioned better.
He had given up on me.
Now he wanted to take everything away from me, lock me in a cold institution, and erase me from his life completely.
If I were forcibly committed, Finn’s records would forever carry the label of having a "mentally ill mother," and he would become the subject of ridicule among everyone in our social circle.
I couldn’t drag my son down with me.
I didn’t blame Preston.
After all, even I had come to hate the person I had become.
I slid the drawer shut and pulled out the full bottle of powerful opioid painkillers.
From downstairs came the faint clinking of silverware and the laughter of the guests.
I carried the bottle with me and slowly made my way up to the cold, dark attic.
It had once been the nursery I had painted and decorated myself before I got sick. Now it was packed with old junk, and no one ever came up here.
I twisted open the bottle and poured handfuls of white pills into my mouth.
With no water to wash them down, the bitter powder scraped raw across my throat, triggering violent dry heaves.
I clamped a hand tight over my mouth and forced every last pill down. The agony was brutal, yet I ached more than anything for it all to end.
I curled up on the dust cover in the corner, feeling my body grow heavier and heavier.
Beyond the wall, footsteps suddenly echoed through the hallway.
