Introduction

Cassandra Vale has built her world on perfection. Elegant, untouchable, and always in control, she knows that in high society appearances are everything. But when whispers of betrayal threaten to unravel her carefully constructed image, she needs a distraction fast, one so scandalous that no one will dare question her again. Enter Damian Cross. He is reckless, magnetic, and every bit the trouble her world despises. The last man she should ever be seen with. Yet when he offers to play her doting lover, Cassandra cannot refuse. The arrangement is simple: act the part, silence the gossip, walk away unscathed. But nothing about Damian is simple. Behind his dangerous grin lies a loyalty she never expected, and behind Cassandra’s perfect mask lies a loneliness she can no longer deny. What begins as a game for the cameras blurs into something neither of them can control. In a world where every glance is judged and every whisper cuts deep, Cassandra must decide if protecting her image is worth losing the only man who makes her feel alive. Because some lies, once spoken, become the truest thing of all.

Chapter 1

Cassandra Vale had spent years perfecting the art of appearances.

Her hair was always sleek, her smile always measured, and her presence at any event drew admiration laced with envy. People whispered about her in gilded halls, calling her poised, untouchable, a woman who always got what she wanted. What they did not whisper, at least not loudly, was that she had recently been left. The man who had funded her indulgences, who had praised her as his muse, had quietly replaced her with a younger flame.

In her world, such things could not be allowed to show. A mistress without a protector was not powerful. She was disposable.

That was why, on the eve of the city’s grandest charity gala, Cassandra sat across from Damian Cross in a dimly lit bar that smelled of whiskey and rebellion.

He leaned back in his chair, leather jacket creaking, boots scuffed as though he had dragged them through every back alley in the city. His grin was lazy, almost predatory. He looked nothing like the kind of man Cassandra should have been seen with. Which, of course, was exactly why she needed him.

“You’re serious about this?” Damian asked, swirling the amber drink in his glass. His voice was smooth, but threaded with something dangerous, like smoke curling around a flame. “You want me to pretend to be your lover in front of every sharp-tongued viper on your guest list?”

Cassandra straightened her spine, chin lifting in practiced elegance. “Not want. Need. The gala is tomorrow. If I show up alone, the rumors will devour me.”

Damian’s dark eyes gleamed with mischief. “And you think bringing me will stop them?” He chuckled, low and rough. “Sweetheart, if anything, I’ll make them worse.”

Her smile was cool, but her fingers tightened on the stem of her wine glass. “Exactly. You’ll make them nervous. They won’t dare whisper about me if they think I’ve chosen someone who could ruin them with a glance.”

For a moment, he just studied her, as though peeling away the polished armor she wore. Most men looked at Cassandra with hunger or awe. Damian looked at her like she was a puzzle he intended to take apart piece by piece.

Finally, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. “So. You want a bad boy on your arm to silence your enemies. What do I get out of this?”

Cassandra met his gaze without flinching. “Exposure. Access. You’ve always been locked out of the circles I move in. Play my game well enough, and doors will open for you.”

Damian’s grin widened, sharp as broken glass. “Ah, so it’s a transaction. Just like everything else in your world.”

Her lips curved faintly, though not with warmth. “Isn’t that what you prefer? No strings, no feelings. Just business.”

Something flickered in his eyes; gone before she could name it. He raised his glass in a mock toast. “Fine. I’ll be your doting boyfriend. Hold your hand, smile for the cameras, maybe even kiss you if the crowd demands it.”

Her pulse jumped, though her face betrayed nothing. “You’ll behave, Cross.”

“Behave?” He laughed, shaking his head. “Darling, if you wanted someone who behaved, you wouldn’t have come to me.”

The way he said darling, mocking, intimate, made her skin prickle. Cassandra was used to men obeying her scripts, falling neatly into their roles. Damian was not a man who obeyed. He was a man who took pleasure in breaking rules just to see how far they would bend before snapping.

And yet… that was exactly why she had chosen him.

“Tomorrow,” she said crisply, finishing her wine. “Seven o’clock sharp. Don’t be late.”

Damian watched her rise from the table, his expression unreadable. “Oh, I’ll be there, Cassandra Vale. But I don’t think you’re ready for the kind of show I put on.”

The next evening, the air outside the Grand Marlowe Hotel buzzed with the hum of luxury cars, paparazzi flashes, and the glittering laughter of the city’s elite. Cassandra stepped from her sleek black car in a gown of midnight silk, her posture a flawless performance of confidence. The crowd turned, whispers already starting.

And then Damian emerged beside her.

He didn’t belong, his untamed hair, the casual arrogance in the way he moved, the smirk daring the cameras to look closer. Yet when he slid an arm around Cassandra’s waist as though it had always belonged there, the gasps rippled louder than any rumor.

Cassandra tilted her head toward him, voice low and clipped. “Remember, this is just an act.”

Damian bent closer, his breath brushing her ear as he whispered, “Sure, sweetheart. But I play my roles so well, people tend to forget they’re not real.”

Her heart stuttered, an unwelcome, treacherous rhythm. She forced a smile for the cameras, her mask of elegance unshaken. But as Damian pulled her closer, guiding her up the steps like a man staking his claim, Cassandra realized this arrangement might be far more dangerous than she had ever planned.

Because for the first time in years, her mask threatened to slip.

"How thoughtful."
"Bella." Ethan's tone shifted, taking on that warning edge I knew too well. "Faye is vulnerable right now. She's terrified you'll resent her, that this will divide the pack. The last thing she wants is for this baby to come between us."
"Then you shouldn't have done it." I met his eyes squarely, letting him see the ice in mine. "Go back to your son."
"For fuck's sake." He dragged a hand through his hair. "How many times—it was artificial insemination. They used my sperm, yes, but Faye and I never—"
Bella let out a cold snort. Such brazen lies. Her mate had an affair with his brother's partner, and his entire family helped force her out with nothing, all to make way for the mistress to take her rightful position. Since he'd tainted himself, Bella was done. She rejected him and reclaimed what was hers, rising to the top with help from Victor, who'd been secretly in love with her for years.

Bella smiled mockingly. "The child's father isn't you."
