Introduction

Claire Bennett built a new life around one rule: never let Ryan Cole find her. She changed her name, moved cities, erased herself online, and learned to trust locks more than people. Years after surviving the man who nearly killed her, she finally begins to believe he’s gone for good.

Then Ryan is released from prison.

At first, nothing happens. Then things inside Claire’s apartment start changing. A window is unlocked. A chair moves. A familiar scent appears where nobody should’ve been. Ryan knows her fears, her routines, and exactly how to make her question her own mind.

Claire once survived by running. This time, she refuses to.

Chapter 1

I checked the front lock fifty times before I let myself touch the deadbolt. Fifty wasn’t a number I liked, and it wasn’t a number anyone had ever told me was safe, but somewhere along the way my brain had decided forty-nine meant something terrible could still happen. I pressed my thumb against the silver latch, pulled once, counted under my breath, and started again until the muscles in my hand began to ache. When I reached fifty, I moved to the deadbolt without allowing myself to look back.

The deadbolt was harder because it had failed me once, though technically that had been another deadbolt in another apartment belonging to another woman. I turned it, tugged the door, counted, and repeated the movement until fifty settled into my head with the tiny relief of a completed task. My therapist years ago had called that relief temporary, which was a polite way of saying my brain was an asshole who demanded payment and never stayed satisfied. I hadn’t seen that therapist in almost three years, but her voice still showed up occasionally to criticize my nighttime routine.

Next came the windows, beginning with the living room because order mattered almost as much as numbers. Left latch, right latch, kitchen window, bedroom window, then the small bathroom window nobody could reasonably climb through unless they were built like a malnourished raccoon. I touched every lock fifty times, photographed each one with my phone, and checked the pictures before moving to the stove. If anything interrupted me, even a notification buzzing against the counter, I started that section over because uncertainty was worse than exhaustion.

The stove had been off since six-thirty, and I knew that because dinner had been a frozen pasta bowl that tasted like sadness with garlic seasoning. Still, I pressed every knob, photographed them, checked the oven twice, then corrected myself because twice wasn’t fifty. By the time I finished, the clock above the microwave read 11:39 p.m., and my shoulders hurt from carrying tension nobody else could see. Normal people probably brushed their teeth and went to bed without conducting a security audit worthy of a federal building.

I wasn’t normal people, and pretending otherwise had stopped being useful years ago. My name was Claire Bennett, I was thirty-two years old, I worked in billing for a medical supply company, and nobody at work knew enough about me to describe anything beyond the coffee I drank and where I sat. I lived in a one-bedroom apartment on the third floor of a building where the neighbors were friendly enough to nod but uninterested enough not to ask questions. I had worked very hard to become forgettable.

Forgettable was safe because memorable people ended up in photographs, tagged online, invited to parties, and mentioned in conversations with strangers. I didn’t have Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or whatever new app people were using to announce their breakfast and location to anyone willing to look. My coworkers thought I hated social media because I was private, which was true in the same way saying drowning people disliked water was technically accurate. There were reasons I had disappeared from the internet, and none of them belonged to Claire Bennett.

I carried my mug to the sink and stared at the dark glass above it before remembering I hadn’t checked the curtains. My stomach tightened immediately, annoyance arriving right behind fear because I knew exactly what my brain was about to demand. I walked through the apartment, checked every curtain, confirmed there were no gaps, then stood in the living room fighting the urge to restart the locks because I had changed the order. It took almost a full minute before I convinced myself curtains weren’t part of the lock sequence.

“Good enough,” I whispered, and the words sounded ridiculous in the empty apartment. Good enough had become something I practiced because perfect safety didn’t exist, no matter how many locks I installed or how many times I checked them. I turned off the lamp beside the couch and immediately turned it back on because darkness made the apartment feel larger than it was. Apparently healing had limits, and mine currently ended somewhere around sleeping without a hallway light.

The television played quietly while I brushed my teeth, some late-night home renovation show where cheerful couples complained about countertops costing more than my first car. I liked shows where nothing truly terrible happened because I already knew what people were capable of when cameras weren’t around. Nobody disappeared, nobody screamed behind locked doors, and nobody smiled while explaining why pain was actually love. The worst thing on television that night was a woman crying because someone had painted her kitchen cabinets gray.

I was rinsing my toothbrush when somebody knocked on my front door.

My entire body stopped.

Not slowed, not hesitated, but stopped so completely that even breathing suddenly required permission. The toothbrush remained in my hand while toothpaste foam slid across my knuckles and another knock sounded through the apartment. Three slow hits against the wood, evenly spaced, deliberate enough to tell me whoever stood outside expected me to hear them.

I looked at the clock beside the television.

11:43 p.m.

Nobody came to my apartment at 11:43 p.m. because nobody came to my apartment at all. I didn’t order delivery after dark, I didn’t give coworkers my address, and even the building manager texted before showing up because I had made that rule painfully clear. The third knock didn’t come.

I set the toothbrush down and reached for the phone on the bathroom counter. My fingers felt numb, which made unlocking the screen harder than it should’ve been. I opened the security camera app before stepping into the hallway, but the feed outside my apartment showed nothing except the beige carpet and ugly floral wallpaper management refused to replace. Whoever had knocked was already gone.

That should’ve made me feel better.

It didn’t.

I walked toward the front door slowly, stopping several feet away because getting close enough to look through the peephole meant getting close enough for someone outside to hear me breathe. My heartbeat slammed against my ribs while my mind began offering possibilities faster than I could reject them. Wrong apartment, drunk neighbor, teenager being stupid, someone delivering something late, somebody looking for help.

Ryan.

The name entered my head so violently that I gripped the phone harder.

“No,” I whispered.

Ryan Cole was eight years, three months, and eleven days behind me. I knew the number because some people counted anniversaries, birthdays, or days until vacation, while I counted the distance between myself and the last time Ryan had been allowed to stand close enough to touch me. He was in prison, and prisons had walls, guards, locked doors, razor wire, procedures, schedules, and paperwork. I trusted paperwork almost as much as locks.

I stepped closer to the peephole and looked out.

Empty hallway.

The elevator doors at the far end were closed, the stairwell door hadn’t moved, and Mrs. Dalton’s ridiculous sunflower wreath hung crooked across from me. Nothing looked wrong. That was when I noticed the corner of a white envelope sticking beneath my door.

My stomach dropped so quickly I felt dizzy.

I backed away.

For several seconds, I stared at the envelope like it might crawl farther into the room if I looked away. There was no writing visible, no stamp, and no reason an envelope should be under my door when the building had locked mailboxes downstairs. I considered calling the police and immediately imagined trying to explain that somebody had committed the terrifying crime of delivering paper.

I took a picture first.

Then another.

Then I grabbed a pair of kitchen tongs because touching the envelope directly felt impossible, and I hated myself a little for caring whether that sounded insane. I lifted it from the floor, placed it on the kitchen counter, and stared at the official seal printed across the upper left corner. The Department of Corrections logo hit me before the words beneath it did.

My knees weakened.

“No.”

I knew what victim notifications looked like because I had received enough of them during the first years after the trial. Facility transfers, appeals, disciplinary proceedings, legal motions, and updates written in sterile language designed to make terrible things fit inside government envelopes. Those letters had stopped years ago. I had built an entire life during the silence.

My hands shook badly enough that opening the envelope became embarrassing even though nobody was there to watch. I tore the paper along the top, pulled out a single folded sheet, and immediately recognized my legal name printed above my address. Claire Bennett looked strange beside words connected to Ryan because Ryan had never known Claire Bennett. Samantha Reed had belonged to him.

My vision blurred before I finished the first paragraph.

This correspondence is to inform you of a change in the custody status of offender Ryan Michael Cole.

I stopped reading.

The apartment seemed to tilt beneath my feet, and I grabbed the counter until the dizziness passed. My brain tried dragging me backward through eight years in a single breath, but I forced my eyes onto the paper because not knowing would be worse. Ryan had become eligible for parole consideration.

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Then five more times because numbers had apparently decided to follow me everywhere.

The letter explained that a hearing would be scheduled, that I had the right to submit a statement, that release wasn’t guaranteed, and that additional notification would follow. Every sentence after his name blurred into useless government language because one fact had already swallowed everything else. The walls around Ryan could open.

I looked toward my front door.

The deadbolt suddenly seemed too small.

The chain looked decorative.

The fifty checks I had completed less than ten minutes earlier became meaningless because fear didn’t care how careful I had been. I crossed the apartment and grabbed the handle, pulling hard enough to make the door shake inside the frame.

Locked.

I checked again.

Locked.

By the tenth check, tears were running down my face, though I couldn’t remember when I started crying. By twenty, my breathing had become shallow, and by thirty I was whispering numbers like prayers while Samantha screamed somewhere I had spent years burying. When I reached fifty, I kept going.

Fifty-one.

Fifty-two.

Fifty-three.

I stopped with my hand wrapped around the deadbolt.

Someone had knocked before the letter came under the door, which meant somebody had stood on the other side long enough to place it there. The Department of Corrections had my mailing address, not instructions to deliver victim notices personally at nearly midnight. I looked through the peephole again and found the hallway empty.

Then my phone buzzed in my hand.

I nearly screamed.

The notification wasn’t a message, call, or alarm. It came from the security application connected to the camera mounted outside my apartment. Motion had been detected at 11:42 p.m., one minute before the knock.

I opened the recording.

For several seconds, the hallway remained empty.

Then the image froze.

The timestamp jumped from 11:42:17 to 11:44:03.

Almost two minutes were missing.

I stared at the screen until the numbers stopped making sense.

Behind me, the letter waited on the kitchen counter.

In front of me, fifty locks suddenly weren’t enough.

Could I protect my babies from the husband plotting my death, hide my true identity from the Alpha who's been hunting me for years, and reclaim the freedom I'd buried along with my dreams—even if it means standing alone against the wolves who see me as nothing more than a womb to be used and discarded?
