ASHES OF ROWAN HOLLOW
Jake Scott · Ongoing · 50.2k Words
Introduction
Instead, she accidentally summons a demon.
Ash is powerful, sharp-tongued, dangerously attractive, and deeply irritated to be there. Worse still, the ritual binds him to Elspeth until the hidden wish buried in her heart is fulfilled—a wish she insists she never made. Now trapped together inside her tiny cottage, the witch and demon are forced into an uneasy coexistence filled with biting tension, dangerous magic, and growing desire neither of them wants to acknowledge.
But as dark forces begin stirring around Rowan Hollow, Elspeth discovers the real danger may not be the demon tied to her soul… but what happens when someone finally sees her completely and stays.
Chapter 1
Elspeth Crowe had learned that exile hurt worse when it came from those who should have understood.
Rowan Hollow was not an ordinary village. It only pretended to be one when travelers passed through. To mortal eyes, it was a damp little town tucked between forest and marsh, all leaning rooftops, narrow lanes, and lanternlight trembling behind fogged glass. But Elspeth knew better. She knew the butcher’s wife kept selkie teeth hidden beneath her tongue. She knew the apothecary’s youngest daughter left hoofprints in the mud when startled. She knew the alder trees whispered names to the old families, and that half the town’s children were born with moon-bright eyes or fox-sharp smiles.
Magic lived openly in Rowan Hollow—if one knew how to look.
It simply did not live kindly with Elspeth.
The fae-blooded women stopped speaking when she passed the well. The hedge-witches refused to trade charms with her unless she paid twice their worth. The hearth spirits pinched out their flames when she crossed certain thresholds. Even the river-wights, who had once braided flowers into her hair when she was a child, now sank beneath the black water whenever she came near.
No one called her powerless.
That would have been easier.
They called her wrong.
Her magic did not bloom the way theirs did. It did not coax flowers from frost or heal bruised fruit or sweeten milk. Elspeth’s power moved in colder currents. It listened too well to shadows. It answered grief too quickly. It could seal wounds, yes, but it could also still a heart if she lost control.
She had never done such a thing.
But magic folk feared possibility almost as much as proof.
So Elspeth lived beyond the last lantern of Rowan Hollow, where the road surrendered to root and bramble. Her cottage sat at the forest’s edge, half-hidden beneath moss and rowan branches, protected by wards she had built herself because no one else would help her weave them.
Inside, the house welcomed her in ways the town never did. The floorboards creaked beneath her feet like greeting. Bundles of herbs hung from the rafters. Candlelight warmed shelves crowded with jars of bone-white salt, dried rosehips, blackthorn needles, raven feathers, river stones, and folded scraps of spellwork written in her mother’s narrow hand.
Her mother had been feared too.
But people had come to her anyway.
Elspeth had not inherited that uneasy respect. Only the fear.
Lately, even her own house had begun to feel uncertain of her.
The wards trembled at night. Not failing exactly, but listening. Waiting. The shadows in the corners grew deep enough that she caught herself watching them back. Her dreams had turned strange and fever-warm, filled with a voice she could not remember upon waking and the sensation of standing before a door that breathed.
She told herself it was nothing.
She told herself this so often it became another kind of spell.
On the night the storm came, Rowan Hollow’s hidden lights burned blue and green through the mist. The will-o’-wisps hovered low over the marsh. The old fox-spirit who guarded the northern road turned his face away as Elspeth passed at a distance, though she had only gone to gather rainwater before moonrise.
The insult should not have stung however it did.
By the time she returned home, rain had soaked through her cloak and plastered loose strands of dark hair to her cheeks. She stood in her kitchen, dripping onto the floor, and felt the old ache rise inside her—the one she tried so hard to swallow.
She was tired of being watched like a crack in the world. She was tired of magic turning its face away. So she went down into the cellar.
The ritual she chose was not meant for demons. That mattered later. In that moment, all that mattered was that it was old magic, older than Rowan Hollow’s pretty little rules, older than fae courts and hedge circles and river bargains. It was a summoning not of a servant, but of an answer.
A guide. A witness. Someone, or something, that would tell her what she was.
Elspeth drew the circle in chalk mixed with ash. Her hands moved slowly, carefully, though her pulse beat hard enough to shake her fingers. Around the sigil she placed black salt, rowan berries, a silver pin, and one pressed violet her mother had kept in a spellbook for reasons Elspeth had never understood.
The cellar air thickened. Above her, thunder rolled.
“You are not wrong,” she whispered to herself, though she did not believe it.
Then she took up the little silver knife and cut her thumb. Blood struck the center of the circle. For one breath, nothing happened. Then every candle flame bent inward. The house groaned, the wards screamed.
And the world opened.

Begging for me to give you the high only I can, I'm going to fucked you until I fuck all my wife's money's worth, I want you to remember how hard I took you while you're meeting her.” I sobbed, moaned, and tried to scramble out under him.
