The Darkwood pack had strict traditions—fated mates were sacred and inviolable, but the Luna position required sufficient strength to fulfill the role.
The pack elders found themselves in a dilemma: they had to respect the Moon Goddess's arrangement while choosing the most suitable leader for the pack.
But Kael's heart belonged to Jennifer, a rogue wolf without bloodline or status.

Kael leaned against the Alpha throne, his fingers tapping carelessly on the armrest, his eyes devoid of emotion.
"I don't care which."
Seeing Kael's indifference, the elder couldn't say much more.
He only reminded us: "You two work it out."
"The new Alpha's succession ceremony cannot wait, and traditions cannot be violated."
I understood the elder's concern.
As Kael's fated mate, I should have been his chosen one.
But Seraphina had always been defiant, believing that as the strongest warrior, she deserved the future Alpha more.
Kael found me weak and never hid his disdain for me, a Beta.
Seraphina saw this as her opportunity, constantly trying to prove she was more suitable to be Luna.
Challenging my strength in the training grounds, questioning my judgment in meetings—these were everyday occurrences.

After leaving the Alpha hall, Seraphina and I had just reached the Moon Goddess shrine when Kael approached us with Jennifer.
But he wasn't looking for me.
He held Jennifer's hand, standing before Seraphina, his Alpha aura radiating dominance.
"Seraphina, congratulations on becoming my Luna. But there's something I need to make clear in advance."
"Jennifer is my true love. I won't abandon her just because of our mating bond. I'll bring her to the packhouse and give her the status she deserves."
"From now on, unless there's a blood moon summons or pack warfare that requires our joint handling, I'll be with Jennifer."
Hearing these familiar words, my heart lurched violently.
In my previous life, Kael had said the exact same thing to me.
It was the first time he had made a demand of me. Not wanting to defy my Alpha, I agreed.
Back then, I thought his fascination with Jennifer was just a temporary infatuation.
When the passion faded, he would naturally return to his fated mate's side and fulfill his Alpha duties.
But I never expected Kael's possessiveness over her to be stronger than I imagined.
And Jennifer wasn't as compliant as she initially promised to be.

The reason Kael refused to let me bear his pups was because Jennifer had deliberately miscarried their first pup during her heat, then framed me for putting moonshade flowers in her food.
Kael believed her. As punishment, he never touched me again, leaving me to endure every heat cycle alone during the full moons.
Seeing me spend full moon nights alone, other she-wolves would whisper behind my back: "Look at that Luna, can't even keep her own Alpha, will never bear the Alpha's pups—what a disgrace to the pack."
Just as the bitter feelings began to surface, Seraphina's voice cut through my thoughts.
