Fated to the Enemy's Heir: The Alpha's Cursed Mate
Daisy · Completed · 204.0k Words
Introduction
I should pull away.
I should hate him.
But my wolf is howling yes while my heart screams no.
"Say stop," he breathes against my pulse, "and I'll stop."
Liar.
We both know he can't stop.
The bond won't let him.
And neither can I.
Ten years ago, they found my father with his throat torn out
on Silvermoon land.
The Sterlings called it "trespassing."
I called it murder.
They gave us hush money and a warning:
Keep quiet, or the Beta's daughter is next.
So I learned to be invisible.
To swallow my rage.
To survive.
Until someone slipped a note into my locker:
They lied about how your father died.
Chase Sterling.
Future Alpha. Golden boy. Untouchable.
The moment our eyes met, the bond snapped into place—
a collar I never asked for, a chain I can't break.
He says he didn't know.
He says his father is innocent.
He says he'll help me find the truth.
But every time he touches me,
I feel my father's blood on his hands.
Now I'm trapped between two impossible choices:
Accept the bond and betray everything I am.
Or break it—and lose the partner who can prove
my father's killer walks free.
The worst part?
When Chase whispers "mine" against my skin—
I want to believe him.
Chapter 1
Wynter's POV
The anonymous letter had arrived three days ago, slipped under my dorm room door in the dead of night. No signature, no return address, just a single line in unfamiliar handwriting: I have proof of what Silvermoon did to your father. Alpha Tower party, Friday night. I'll find you.
Now, as Rosalie dragged me across the quad toward the bass-thumping courtyard, I wondered if I'd made a huge mistake.
"I still can't believe I let you talk me into this," I muttered, my free hand brushing the letter in my pocket.
"You didn't—I bribed you with coffee." She flashed that sunny smile that had gotten us both into trouble since we were fourteen. "Besides, time to show them you're still standing."
My wolf stirred uneasily as we approached the courtyard where string lights crisscrossed overhead. The scent of a hundred different territories mingled in the air—Silvermoon's pine and frost, Bloodrock's iron and stone, and underneath it all, the faint cedar that marked my own Emerald Valley pack.
The pack whose emissary had died on Sterling territory two years ago.
I scanned the crowd desperately, searching for whoever had sent that letter. But all I saw were the usual clusters—Alphas in the center like they owned the place, Betas orbiting around them, and everywhere faces that had spent two years making it clear I didn't belong.
We'd barely stepped into the courtyard when I felt it—
A pull so strong it stopped me cold.
Heat flooded my veins, my wolf surging forward with a violence that made my vision blur, her howl reverberating through my bones: MATE.
No. No no no—
My eyes found him before my brain could stop them.
Chase Sterling stood near the VIP section, ice-blue eyes locked on mine like he'd been waiting. The moment our gazes met, he went completely still. His lips parted on what might've been a sharp breath, his shoulders going rigid. I watched his hands curl slowly into fists at his sides, knuckles white.
The future Alpha of Silvermoon Territory. The son of the man who'd killed my father.
The bond snapped into place with physical force—I felt it in my bones, in my blood, in the sudden overwhelming need to go to him. His scent hit me even from here: winter pine and something darker, richer, completely intoxicating. My wolf whined with longing, and I hated her for it.
"Wyn?" Rosalie's voice seemed to come from underwater. "You look like you're gonna pass out."
I couldn't answer, couldn't breathe, because across the distance I could see his expression shift from shock to something raw and almost anguished. For just a heartbeat, his eyes bled to Alpha gold before he forced them back to ice-blue, his entire body vibrating with barely controlled tension.
From beside him, Anne Kaine's hand tightened possessively on his arm, her crimson dress like a warning flag. Her gaze followed his to me, her expression curdling from confusion to understanding to pure, venomous rage.
"Well, well." Natalie Pierce materialized in front of us, blocking my view. "Didn't realize we were doing charity work tonight, Rosalie."
"Back off, Natalie," Rosalie warned.
"I'm just surprised to see the valley's favorite bad luck charm at an Alpha Tower event." Natalie tilted her head with fake sympathy. "First her mother, then her father—who's next, I wonder?"
Around us the whispers started, phones coming out to record, the crowd pressing closer.
"We're just trying to have a good time here. The last thing we need is someone who brings death wherever she goes." Natalie's smile sharpened. "Maybe you should keep your distance, Wynter. Before someone else mysteriously ends up dead."
Connor appeared at Rosalie's side, but instead of defending me, his eyes slid away. "Ros, you really shouldn't have brought her here."
My wolf howled in rage, in grief, in a fury so deep it threatened to tear through my skin. But I couldn't afford to lose it, not when Lord Julian had vouched for my place here.
"It's fine," I heard myself say. "Rosalie, it's okay. You should stay."
"Wynter, no—"
"Please." I met her eyes, trying to convey everything I couldn't say aloud—thank you for trying, save yourself—and turned to leave.
That's when I felt it again, that pull stronger now and almost painful. I looked up to find that Chase had moved closer—not much, just a few steps, but enough that I could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands trembled before he clenched them tighter.
Anne Kaine appeared at his side, following his gaze to me. "Chase? Why are you staring at her?"
He didn't answer, his jaw working like he wanted to say something but couldn't force the words out. Anne's smile turned dangerous. "I see. The cursed little Beta thinks she can come here and—what? Spread her bad luck to the rest of us?"
She moved fast, and I had just enough time to register her intention before her hand cracked across my face hard enough to snap my head sideways.
The slap sent me reeling, and I went down hard. My palms scraped against rough stone, the emerald dress Rosalie had lent me tearing as pain bloomed across my cheek.
A low, dangerous sound rumbled in Chase's chest—barely audible, but enough to make the wolves closest to him tense.
I looked up through blurred vision to see him standing rigidly in place, his jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscle jumping beneath his skin. His eyes flickered between ice-blue and gold, like he was fighting his wolf for control with every ounce of willpower he had.
His hand shot out and grabbed Anne's sleeve, fingers twisting in the fabric with white-knuckled force. His expression was twisted—caught between fury and something that looked almost like pain, his features contorted as he struggled against instincts that clearly demanded he do more.
"That's enough," he said through gritted teeth, his voice strained. Not the commanding Alpha tone—this was rougher, like the words were being dragged out of him against his will.
Anne turned to him, confusion flickering across her face. "Chase?"
His grip on her sleeve tightened, pulling her back a step. "I said let her go."
His eyes found mine for a heartbeat, and I saw the struggle there, raw and agonizing, before he forced himself to look away.
A hundred phones were recording this moment. Recording the future Alpha of Silvermoon losing control over a girl from Emerald Valley.
"Stay away from him," Anne hissed, standing over me. "Stay away from all of us. Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of before you get someone else killed."
"Wyn!" Rosalie shoved past Connor, dropping to her knees beside me. "Are you okay?"
"She's a curse!" Anne's voice carried across the courtyard. "And if you had any sense, you'd stay away from her too."
Rosalie stood, and I'd never seen her look so fierce. "You know what? Screw you, Anne. Screw all of you." She turned to Connor. "And we're done. If you can't stand up for basic human decency, then I don't want anything to do with you."
I grabbed her hand, squeezing once. "Ros, it's okay. Really. You should stay—"
"Absolutely not." Her grip tightened.
"Please," I whispered. "Just stay. I'll be fine."
She opened her mouth to argue, but I was already pulling away, already turning toward the exit, my cheek throbbing and my wolf howling and the anonymous letter burning in my pocket like a cruel joke.
Chase stood frozen, his jaw working like he wanted to say something but couldn't. His hands flexed at his sides, and I could see him fighting it—fighting the urge to come to me, fighting his wolf's demand to protect his mate, fighting everything his position required him to be.
Our eyes met across the distance one last time, and the bond pulled so hard it physically hurt. Something shattered in his expression—a flash of pain so deep it made my own chest ache. His hand came up like he might reach for me, then dropped.
I ran.
Ran past the whispers and the recording phones, past the crowd that parted for me like I carried plague, until I burst out of the courtyard and into the night air that felt too thin, too cold, too empty of answers.
Behind me, I heard Rosalie calling my name, heard my own ragged breathing as I pressed my back against the stone wall and finally let the tears come—hot, angry tears that had nothing to do with the pain in my cheek and everything to do with the cosmic joke my life had become.
The future Alpha of Silvermoon Territory was my fated mate.
What a ridiculous, impossible, completely devastating fate.
