He Begged When I Was Already Gone
Ruby · Ongoing · 6.0k Words
Introduction
That night, he booked the restaurant where we'd had our first date. He wore the tie I'd given him. For a few minutes, I let myself believe he finally understood.
Then he asked me to eat faster. She wanted dessert.
So I stopped counting. I signed my transfer papers, packed up seven years, and boarded my flight without looking back.
By the time he realized I wasn't bluffing, I was already gone. Now he's the one left waiting, and all the roses in the world won't bring me back.
Chapter 1
Eva's POV
On our seventh anniversary, my fiancé left me standing outside the courthouse so he could drive another woman to the hospital. It was the ninety-ninth time he'd called off our wedding for her.
——
I'd been waiting outside the courthouse for three hours when Mason's white SUV pulled up.
I got to my feet, the folder of documents clutched in my hand. Then I saw Chloe Keller in the passenger seat.
Mason Collins and I had been together for seven years. We worked at the same hospital, where Chloe was an intern he'd taken under his wing. Lately, every plan we made seemed to depend on whether she could spare him.
His last text was still on my screen.
“A medical emergency came up. Give me a few minutes.”
He rolled down the window.
“Get in, Eva. Chloe's having heart palpitations. We need to get her to the hospital.”
Chloe groaned and bent forward, one hand pressed against her chest. Her hair was freshly curled, her blouse neatly pressed beneath her white coat. None of that ruled out an emergency. But I'd seen her joking at the nurses' station that morning, and I knew how often her emergencies coincided with our plans.
“Mason, we're supposed to be getting married today.”
“I know.” He struck the steering wheel with his palm. “She's having trouble breathing. Can we argue about this later?”
Chloe lifted her head.
“I'm okay, Dr. Collins. You two go ahead. I can take a cab.”
She reached for her seat belt. As she turned, she glanced at me and smiled—a quick, satisfied smile Mason couldn't see.
He caught her hand before she could unbuckle the belt.
“Look at her, Eva. We can get married another day. What if something happens to her? Stop being selfish.”
I looked from him to Chloe. All three of us were doctors. He was talking to me as though I didn't understand why a patient might need urgent care.
“She was fine on rounds this morning. Has anyone assessed her?”
“She has a rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath. She could go into—”
“Then she needs to be assessed. But don't tell me she's in critical condition when you don't know that.”
Chloe stopped groaning long enough to watch his face.
Mason opened his door and stepped out. “What is your problem with her?”
I had tried to explain it before. A missed dinner, a canceled trip, another day spent waiting for him. Each time, we ended up arguing about my jealousy instead of what he'd done.
I slid the documents back into the folder.
“Ninety-nine.”
“What?”
“This is the ninety-ninth time we've made plans to get married. And the ninety-ninth time you've canceled them for her.”
I turned toward the subway entrance. His footsteps came after me, and he caught my wrist.
“Eva, don't do this.”
“The first time, we'd gone away to elope. She called because she was working nights and didn't want to be alone. You took a red-eye home to keep her company.”
His fingers tightened.
“The next time, we got as far as these doors. Someone said she'd passed out from exhaustion. You left me here in the snow. I waited all day because you said you'd come back.”
I pulled my wrist free.
“Do you remember what else today is?”
He stared at me.
“Our seventh anniversary, Mason.”
For a moment, he looked frightened. His mouth opened, but Chloe groaned from inside the car.
He turned at once.
“I know you're upset,” he said, already backing toward her. “But she needs me right now. I can't put off her treatment for a wedding. Take a cab home. We'll talk later.”
I nodded. I couldn't think of anything to say that I hadn't said before.
He got into the SUV and drove away. I stayed on the sidewalk with our documents, watching until the car disappeared.
I'd come that morning still expecting to marry him.
