He Married My Sister on Our Wedding Day
Agatha Christie · Completed · 6.5k Words
Introduction
He said he'd left his grandmother's lucky cufflinks at the family house.
But when my car died in the storm, I opened my bridesmaid's Instagram live.
Declan was sliding my custom diamond ring onto Phoebe's finger—my adopted sister, the one with the bad heart.
My own parents were crying in the front row. My bridesmaids were cheering.
They'd turned my wedding into a dying wish ceremony for Phoebe.
Hours later, alone in the ER, I called forty-seven times.
No one picked up.
Not until after I lost the baby and disappeared from Manhattan.
That's when Declan finally came apart.
Chapter 1
On our wedding day, Declan sent me out to Long Island. We'd been together seven years.
Renata's POV
I was still in my wedding dress when I found the empty box.
Two hours earlier, Declan had grabbed my hands in the bridal suite. His eyes were red. His voice was almost pleading.
"Renata, I left my grandmother's lucky cufflinks at the Long Island house. She made me promise I'd wear them. I don't trust anyone else to go." He squeezed my fingers. "Please. The helicopter's on the roof—it'll be quick. I swear the wedding will be perfect."
I looked at this man I'd loved for seven years. I looked at the worry in his eyes.
I said yes.
I gathered up my dress, took the helicopter to Long Island, then switched to a car to reach the house.
The safe was empty. Just a velvet jewelry box sitting inside it, open, with nothing in it.
I called Declan. Not available.
I called my mother. No answer.
I called Sara—my maid of honor, my best friend of ten years. Busy signal.
My chest went tight. My hands were shaking as I scrolled through my phone, not looking for anything in particular, until Sara's Instagram notification appeared at the top of the screen.
LIVE — "Witness the purest love & a miracle: Phoebe's dream come true moment"
I tapped it open.
One second of footage was all it took. Every drop of blood in my body went cold.
The Plaza ballroom. My venue. The ten thousand white roses I'd personally ordered, flown in from Ecuador, draped across every surface of that room.
But the woman standing before the altar wasn't me.
It was Phoebe. My adopted sister. The one with the bad heart.
She was wearing my backup wedding dress—visibly too big on her, wrong at the shoulders—and she was leaning into Declan's side, tears running down her face, looking fragile the way she'd always known how to look fragile.
Declan was in the black tails meant for our ceremony. He was looking at her with eyes so soft they could have melted.
And he was sliding a ring onto her finger.
My ring. The one I'd designed myself. The one engraved with both our initials.
In the front row, my mother was sobbing against my father's shoulder. My bridesmaids were cheering.
Sara's voice came through the speaker, thick with tears:
"Phoebe's heart condition has gotten worse. The doctors say she might not make it through the winter. Her biggest dream in life was to put on a wedding dress and marry a man who loves her. Today, all of us are here to make that dream come true."
So that was it. Everyone had their role in the story they were telling. The noble dying girl. The devoted almost-husband. The weeping parents.
And I was the clown they'd sent to Long Island so I wouldn't ruin the scene.
I don't fully remember hailing the cab.
I just remember standing in the pouring rain with my arm out, in a wedding dress, until one stopped.
The driver took one look at me—soaked through, mud on the hem, mascara destroyed—and drove the whole way back to Manhattan without saying a word.
When I pushed open the ballroom doors, the cheering died instantly.
I was drenched. The hem of my dress was caked with mud. I probably looked like a monster that had crawled in from the wrong story.
Declan's face went pale the moment he saw me. His arm dropped from Phoebe's waist.
"Renata—" His voice came out wrong. "You're back already?"
"My car died. I took a cab." I kept walking toward him. My wet shoes made sounds on the marble. "There were no cufflinks, Declan."
"Okay, just—listen, I can explain—"
"I watched the livestream."
Phoebe pressed a hand to her chest and stepped back, her tears coming harder.
"Renata, please." Her voice dropped to almost nothing. "Don't be mad. I just—I needed one day. One day that felt like mine. I'm dying. I only asked to borrow him for a little while, that's it."
"Give me the ring."
"I just wanted—"
"Phoebe." I held out my hand, palm up. "Give me my ring."
"Renata. That is enough."
My mother stepped in front of Phoebe and turned to face me, looking at me like I'd lost my mind.
"Your sister is sick. She is dying. You've had Declan for seven years—you'll have him for the rest of your life. She wanted one day. One single day to feel what you feel, and you can't even give her that?" Her voice cracked. "God, when did you get so cold?"
My father walked over, arms crossed, jaw tight.
"We sent you to Long Island so there'd be no awkwardness about it. This ceremony has no legal standing—it's just a gesture. But you had to come back and make a scene." He looked at me hard. "What do you need, for Phoebe to collapse right here before you'll let this go?"
Three faces I'd known my whole life. My family.
I thought about the year they brought Phoebe home—I was ten. She had a congenital heart defect and I became a shadow in my own house overnight.
When Phoebe wanted my bedroom, they told me I was the older one, I should give.
When Phoebe wanted my Ivy League spot, they made me step aside.
And now Phoebe wanted my fiancé and my wedding, and they wanted me to be gracious about that too.
I turned to Declan.
"Was any of it real?" My voice came out quieter than I meant it to. "Seven years. Was any of it actually real?"
Guilt moved across his face. Then his jaw set.
"Phoebe was in the hospital yesterday. She grabbed my hand and said that dying without ever having this—" he exhaled— "was her only regret. You're strong, Renata. You've always been the strongest person I know. I knew you'd find a way to understand."
"And if I told you I don't?"
A pause.
"Then I'm sorry," he said. "But I still need you to understand."
Sara pushed through the crowd and planted herself between us.
"Renata, stop. She cannot handle this right now—"
Then Phoebe cried out. Her hand flew to her chest and she went limp against Declan, her knees folding.
The room came apart all at once.
"Phoebe—"
"Someone call 911—"
"Get a doctor, now—"
Declan swept her up without hesitating and ran for the exit. My parents followed without a glance back. Sara turned one last time and looked straight at me.
"This is on you," she said. "If anything happens to her—this is on you."
The doors swung shut.
The crowd streamed past me like I wasn't there. Nobody stopped. Nobody looked back.
I stood alone in the middle of ten thousand white roses and watched the room empty out.
I laughed.
Then the pain hit—low and sharp, tearing through my stomach without warning.
