Introduction

HIS WIFE FOR ONE YEAR

He wanted a wife. She needed a miracle. Neither expected to find forever.

Amelia Hart never imagined that the worst day of her life would lead her into the arms of the most powerful man in the city.

With her family's home on the verge of foreclosure and no way to repay their crushing debt, Amelia is desperate enough to accept the one offer she should have rejected.

Marry Damian Blackwood for one year.

Damian is a billionaire CEO who has everything money can buy—except the one thing his grandfather demands before handing him control of the family empire: a wife.

Their arrangement is simple.

One year.

One marriage.

No love.

No questions.

No emotional attachments.

But living under the same roof changes everything.

The cold billionaire who claims he doesn't believe in love begins showing Amelia a tenderness no one else has ever seen. The woman who swore she would never fall for a rich man's charm slowly discovers the wounded heart hidden behind his ruthless reputation.

Then their carefully controlled attraction explodes into something neither contract can contain.

Love.

When Amelia finally believes their marriage might become real, Damian's beautiful former fiancée returns with a dangerous agenda. Lies surface. Family secrets are exposed. And Amelia discovers that the contract she signed may have been designed to destroy her from the beginning.

With their marriage—and Damian's empire—hanging by a thread, Amelia must decide whether to walk away before her heart breaks completely.

And Damian must answer the question he has spent his entire life avoiding:

If she was only supposed to be his wife for one year, why does losing her feel like losing everything?

They married for money.

They stayed together for convenience.

They fell in love by accident.

Chapter 1

The eviction notice was still crumpled in her bag when Amelia Hart shoved through the wrong revolving door.

She didn't know that yet. She only knew her hands wouldn't stop shaking, that the bank had called four times since sunrise, and that somewhere on the forty-second floor of the Renaissance Center — the one building on the Detroit riverfront everyone in her neighborhood pointed at and never expected to enter — a man named Mr. Callahan supposedly held "a solution."

Nothing that started inside a glass tower this expensive ever ended well for someone like her.

The lobby alone could have wiped out her family's debt twice over. Marble floors caught the light off the Detroit River through windows two stories tall. Security guards clocked her secondhand coat before they clocked her face.

"I need Mr. Callahan," she told the receptionist, knuckles white around her bag strap.

The woman scanned a screen and frowned. "Callahan's on thirty-eight. This is the executive floor."

"There has to be—"

"Miss Hart."

The voice cut through the lobby without rising in volume at all. Amelia spun around, and whatever she'd planned to say lodged in her throat.

She recognized him instantly — Damian Blackwood, splashed across every business page from Woodward Avenue to Wall Street, the man reporters called the Ice King because no camera had ever caught him smiling. The photographs had lied. In person, he didn't just occupy space — he claimed it.

"You're not Mr. Callahan," she blurted.

The corner of his mouth twitched. Not a smile. A warning. "No. But I'm the reason you're here."

"I don't understand."

"You will." His gaze flicked once to the guards, the receptionist, the employees suddenly fascinated by their phones. "Not here."

It wasn't an invitation. It was a command dressed as one.

His office swallowed the top floor — glass on three sides, the city and the river stretched out below like something he owned outright. Damian dropped into the chair behind a desk built for signing deals that ended careers, and studied her the way a man studies a spreadsheet he already knows the ending of.

Amelia despised being read. She despised more that she couldn't read him back.

"Your father owes eleven-point-two million across three creditors," Damian said. "Your house goes to auction in nineteen days. Your mother's medical bills are six months past due, and your brother's tuition cleared last semester on a card that's maxed out."

The blood drained from her face.

"How—" Her voice snapped in half. "Who told you that?"

"I make it my business to know things." He said it the way other men mentioned the weather. "I also know you turned down money from a man named Griggs three days ago. Smart move. He'd have gutted you within the year."

"Is there a point to this?" Her fists curled at her sides, humiliation scorching hotter than fear now. "Or did you drag me up here just to prove you can dig through someone's whole life with one phone call?"

"The point," Damian said, rising, "is that I can end every one of those problems in the next thirty minutes."

She nearly laughed in his face. "And what — I owe you for the rest of my life?"

"No." He closed the distance between them in three strides, and she hated how her pulse spiked when he did. "I need a wife."

The words didn't land right away. She actually turned her head, checking for someone else in the room.

"Excuse me?"

"My grandfather controls sixty percent of Blackwood Enterprises," he said. "He's ruled that I don't inherit full control unless I'm married by the end of the quarter. He believes a wife will make me — his words — less of a machine."

"That's insane."

"That's leverage." His eyes didn't move off hers. "I don't have time to court a woman, fall in love, and talk her into marrying a stranger for the right reasons. I need someone practical. Someone who understands this is a contract, not a fantasy."

Her heart slammed against her ribs. "And you picked me because—"

"Because you need eleven million dollars," he said, flat as a ledger, "and I'm offering fifteen."

The number hit her like a fist to the sternum. Fifteen million. Enough to save the house. Enough to clear every debt, get her mother into real treatment, stop flinching every time the phone rang.

"One year," Damian said, before she could recover. "You live in my house. You attend the events I require. You wear my ring where the cameras can see it. When the year ends, your family's debt is gone, the money is yours, and you walk away."

"And if I refuse?"

"Then I find someone who won't, and you go back downstairs to Callahan — who, for the record, was about to offer you a payment plan you'd never survive." He tilted his head. "I intercepted you as a courtesy, Miss Hart. Whether you call that a favor is your business."

Amelia stared at him — at a man who'd just recited her family's ruin like a quarterly report, who talked about marriage the way other men talked about mergers, who wasn't asking her to trust him so much as daring her to refuse.

Every nerve in her body told her to walk out that door and never look back.

Then she thought of her mother's hands, thinner every week she visited. Her father, aged a decade in eighteen months. The notice folded inside her bag, ticking down like a fuse.

"You're out of your mind," she whispered.

"I've heard worse."

She shut her eyes for one second — the last second she could still walk away and pretend this never happened.

When she opened them, her voice came out steadier than she felt. "What would I have to sign?"

Damian didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a folder already stamped with her name — Amelia Grace Hart — and set it in front of her, open to a page dated three weeks ago.

Three weeks before she'd ever walked into this building.

"You should know," he said quietly, "this isn't the first time I've made this offer. It's the third."

He hadn't picked her at random. He'd been planning this for weeks — and the woman he'd wanted first had said no.

He grabbed my hair and dragged me downstairs. His grip on my hands and feet ached terribly. I sobbed and wept, silent tears streaming down my face. I was powerless to break free, my left hand clutching my broken right wrist.

He was a beast inhabiting this mansion, inflicting inhuman torture on my poor soul. He had created a living hell for me, this pitiful girl, within his castle.

On this cold winter night, he threw my wounded body into the icy pool, arrogantly enjoying it all, drinking and smoking expensive cigars. A satisfied, cold smile played on his lips as he reveled in my pain. His face was filled with the darkness of sin.

“How...more...am I…still…standing?” I stammered, my lips trembling.

Zain paused, thinking. Then, turning away from her, he replied:

“Until you die!”

With that, he left. As he wished. At that moment, my wish came true; I died.

But not in a frozen pool; I was struck in the head by a bullet from afar, blood splattering everywhere—that was far more gruesome.

My consciousness began to fade, but suddenly, I opened my eyes again and found myself mopping the floor in an ordinary restaurant.

I was startled: What happened? I was reborn? This is unbelievable!
