My Fiancée Gave My First-Class Seat to Her Lover
Chau · Completed · 5.2k Words
Introduction
To make it up to her, I planned a luxury vacation for all of us.
But the night before we left, she told me she'd given my first-class seat to her childhood best friend.
Instead, she booked me a seat in economy—on a flight with a recent terror threat advisory.
The whole family thought I should just go along with it.
That's when I finally woke up.
I tore up the itinerary and rerouted to Hawaii instead.
I turned off my phone, leaving them to deal with the $20,000 bill.
It wasn't until their hotel reservations got canceled that they started to panic.
Chapter 1
My fiancée, Lia, always says I care more about making money than I do about family.
To smooth things over, I carved time out of my packed meeting schedule to plan this family vacation.
Even though it was meant to be a "family trip," I was the only one making it happen.
Flights, hotels, ski instructors, slope passes, extreme weather plans, premium travel insurance, Lia's mother's medication, her father's drinking—I handled every single detail.
Including the cost.
All they did was stand around discussing filters, photo ops, and what color their ski outfits should be.
Even when Mia, Lia's little sister, mentioned she "wanted to try real paragliding," I made it happen.
Winter paragliding is one of the riskiest activities out there.
I paid triple the usual rate to bring in Aspen's most experienced mountain safety team.
I considered them family. So I didn't mind working hard or spending for them.
After all, I'm the CEO of Vance Global. My year-end bonus stretches into eight figures—I could buy the whole ski valley if I wanted.
Lia holds the title of "Special Projects Director" at my company, barely scraping together a $10k monthly salary.
Without that handout, her own earnings hover around five grand.
Her parents are retired, living in my villa. Mia's education has been fully funded by me since she was twelve.
Seeing how excited they were about the trip made all the effort feel worth it.
Then, the night before we were set to leave, Lia casually mentioned:
"Oh, by the way, Chris said he's always wanted to see Aspen, so I told him he could join. But he decided last minute, first class was fully booked. I called the airline and switched the names—he's taking your seat. I got you a new one."
When I saw the flight info she sent me, my heart sank.
It was the same airport from last night's news bulletin—the one with a suspected terrorist threat.
And she'd booked me in economy.
I paused. "Why not put Chris on this flight instead?"
"You've flown first class a thousand times, Landon. What's the difference? Chris has never experienced it—I wanted him to have something nice."
"So you gave him my first-class seat and put me on a risky flight in economy?"
Her tone turned sharp. "Do you always have to make everything sound so transactional? Chris and I grew up together. Of course I want him to feel included."
"I thought this was a family trip?"
"Chris is different."
"Last week, when my dad wanted to come, you said no because it was 'our family trip!'"
"Being around your dad makes me uncomfortable. Chris knows everything about us—he's practically family."
Before I could respond, Lia's mother, Caroline, stepped in to calm me.
"Landon, don't make a fuss. Chris and Lia have known each other since they were children. It's only right we look out for him."
Mia chirped happily, "Chris is riding first class with us? Awesome! You're rich, Landon—just let him have it this once."
I glanced at the brand-new full ski set in her hands and felt the irony sink deep.
"Can't you be the bigger person, as my fiancé?" Lia snapped.
The doorbell rang.
"It's Chris!"
Chris walked in wearing casual vacation clothes, dragging an oversized suitcase.
Mia rushed over to help him with his bag. "You're finally here! I've been looking forward to this. If you hadn't moved away, you and Lia would've gotten married—you'd be my real brother-in-law!"
Caroline walked over and patted Chris on the shoulder.
"That's right. I've always said you're like a son to us. No one measures up to you in my eyes."
They were praising another man right in front of me.
In that moment, I felt something grow cold and still inside my chest.
