Introduction

Ariana Vale has spent her whole life proving she belongs behind the wheel. At twenty four, she is already a world champion, the fastest woman on the circuit, and the face of Vale Racing, the team her father built from a single garage. Everyone thinks her life is perfect. They do not know her father is sick, her contract is about to run out, and her biggest rival wants her seat.
Then her brakes fail at two hundred miles an hour, and Ari learns someone inside her own team wants her gone for good.
Noah Callahan does not care about her trophies. As the team's new performance engineer, his only job is to keep her alive on the track, and he tells her the truth nobody else dares to say out loud. She is not driving like someone who wants to win. She is driving like someone who does not care if she survives.
Ari hates him for it. Then she starts to need him for it.
Forced together through every practice, every flight, and every late night strategy meeting, hatred turns into something neither of them can afford, because somewhere inside Vale Racing, a person Ari trusts is trying to end her career, and maybe her life, before the season is over.
Now Ari has to win a championship, catch a traitor, and decide if the one man who sees past her fame is worth the risk of losing control.

Chapter 1

Ari's POV

Three corners left. The board flashed my sector time in green, and green meant record pace, green meant I could still take it. I pushed the car harder into turn eleven, tires screaming against the track, and felt the back end twitch just enough to remind me how close I was riding to the edge.

"Ari, hold your line." The voice cracked through my headset, one instruction out of a dozen I had already stopped hearing clearly. Somewhere behind me, tucked half a car length back, another car refused to give me an inch. She had been on my bumper since lap forty, waiting for me to blink first.

I was not going to blink.

The chicane came up fast. I braked at my usual marker, trusting the same spot I had used all season, trusting the car the way I trusted my own hands. The pedal went down.

It kept going down.

No bite. No resistance. Just the floor, soft under my foot like something had already given up before I did.

"Brakes." My voice came out flat over the radio, like I was reporting someone else's problem instead of my own. "I have no brakes."

Nobody answered fast enough. The wall came up on my right, gray and getting bigger, and I turned the wheel hard left because that was the only thing left to try. The car did not listen. It kept sliding toward the barrier at full speed, and for one second the whole track seemed to stop breathing along with me.

Then the wall hit back.

Metal folded around the cockpit. The wheel jumped out of my hands and slammed into my ribs. Something in the front end tore loose with a sound like a gunshot, and the car spun once, twice, gravel spraying across the windshield until the world finally stopped turning.

I sat there blinking at the cracked visor. My ears rang. My mouth tasted like copper. Somewhere far off, a siren started up, already moving toward me fast.

The harness dug into my shoulders when I reached for the release. My hands shook too hard to work the buckle on the first try, so I tried again, slower, and it finally gave. I shoved the door and it groaned halfway open before I had to push the rest with my shoulder.

"Ari, stay in the car." Someone shouted through the radio still clipped near my ear. I pulled it off and dropped it on the seat behind me.

My legs held when I stood, which surprised me more than it should have. Cameras swung my way fast, a dozen lenses catching the exact second I climbed out of a wreck that should have kept me down longer. I did not wave. I did not give them the calm smile I usually managed after a hard hit, the kind that kept sponsors from panicking.

Because I was not fine, not the way they thought.

I had checked those brakes myself that morning. Signed the sheet with my own hand, watched the crew run the pressure test twice because I always asked for twice. Nothing on that sheet said the pedal would go soft on lap fifty eight, and cars did not forget how to stop on their own.

The medical crew reached me first, two of them, hands already moving toward my shoulders like I was something breakable. I stepped past them instead, toward the front left corner where the impact had torn the bodywork clean off and left the guts of the car open to the air.

"Ma'am, you need to sit down." One of them grabbed my arm.

"Give me one second." I pulled free, not hard, just enough to reach the wreck before anyone could stop me for good.

The brake line hung loose from the wheel housing, split clean instead of torn ragged the way metal fatigue usually looked. Underneath it, a small pool had already collected on the track, dark and spreading slow across the gray asphalt.

I crouched down, ignoring the pull in my ribs, and looked closer.

Brake fluid was not supposed to look like that. It ran clear, sometimes a little gold with age, never this deep, almost black under the track lights. I had grown up around cars long enough to know every fluid one could bleed, and this was not one I recognized at all.

A marshal knelt beside me before I could stop him, an older man who had worked this track longer than I had been alive. He put a hand on my shoulder, gentler than the medics had been.

"Ari, we need to get you checked out. Now."

"Look at this first." My voice was not steady anymore, and I did not bother fixing it. I pointed at the puddle, at the wrong color spreading toward his boots. "That is not brake fluid. That is not anything that belongs in this car."

He frowned at the same spot I was staring at, and for a second neither of us said a word.

Then he dipped two fingers into the edge of the puddle before I could stop him and rubbed them together slowly, testing the texture between his skin.

His face changed. Not shock exactly. Recognition. The kind of look a man gets when he already knows the answer and hates that he does.

"This was not from your car," he said, low enough that the cameras still circling us could not pick it up. "Somebody added this."

I stared at him, waiting for the rest, for some explanation that made this an accident instead of what it was starting to sound like.

He did not give me one. He stood up fast, wiped his fingers on his jacket, and looked over his shoulder toward the garage like he was checking who might already be watching us from there.

"Sir." I grabbed his sleeve before he could walk off. "What does that mean, added?"

He hesitated, and that hesitation told me more than any answer could have. Whatever he knew, he was deciding right now how much of it he was allowed to say to my face.

"It means somebody wanted this exact car to fail tonight." He pulled his arm free, gentle but firm, and started backing toward the garage tunnel. "And whoever it was knew exactly what they were doing."

A photographer's flash caught the side of his face as he turned, freezing him mid step, one hand raised like he was about to say something else and thought better of it.

"Wait." I pushed myself up, ribs screaming, and went after him anyway. "You don't get to walk off after telling me that."

He did not slow down, moving through the crowd like a man trying not to be noticed, and that alone told me more than the fluid ever could.

Then he was gone, swallowed into the crowd gathering near the tunnel entrance, and I was left standing beside a puddle of something that was never supposed to be inside my car, with a hundred cameras still rolling and not one of them pointed at the only thing that actually mattered.

you are my queen, and I want to kiss you now,” he said.
I’m not sure that was what I expected him to say, but I had been waiting to hear it. I smiled playfully, looking at him. “Yes, my king,” I said.
Moments, his lips were on mine. The kiss was soft and gentle at first, his hands wrapped around my waist, pulling me close to him; I let my arms find their way around his neck. I felt his tongue gently run along my lower lip and couldn’t help the soft moan that escaped my mouth at its touch. Von only took that as permission and slipped his tongue into my mouth; I let my tongue explore his mouth as he did the same to mine. Eventually, the kiss grew deeper, and before I knew it, I was straddling his lap in one quick motion. His hands found their way to my hair, tangled in it as he tugged it lightly in his grip. I couldn’t help moaning against his lips; a growl of pleasure came from deep in his throat.
