Introduction
Damon Bloodhowl was her fated mate, the Alpha heir, and the one wolf she thought would choose her when no one else ever had. Instead, he rejects her in front of the entire pack and claims her stepsister, Mira, as his chosen mate.
Humiliated, heartbroken, and abandoned by her own family, Selene expects the night to end with her shame.
Then Alpha Ronan rises.
Damon’s father. Bloodhowl’s ruthless Alpha. A wolf feared, obeyed, and never questioned.
Before Selene can accept Damon’s rejection, Ronan places his Alpha ring in her hand and claims her as his chosen mate.
Now Selene is trapped between the mate who rejected her, the Alpha who chose her, and a pack waiting to see whether she will break.
Ronan’s protection is dangerous. His attention is impossible to ignore. And the more Selene stands beside him, the more enemies begin to circle.
She was rejected by the heir.
Chosen by the Alpha.
But the choice that matters most may be the one Selene makes for herself.
Chapter 1
Selene’s POV
Tonight was the night I had waited for.
For four long years, I had waited to turn nineteen and finally become Damon’s mate and escape the hellhole my life was currently in. Four years of holding on to every quiet promise he had made when no one else was around to hear him. Four years of believing that once the Bloodhowl mating ceremony came, my life would finally stop feeling like something I had to survive.
I’d been faithful to Damon and saved my virginity just for this night so that it would be special. His promises of love, duty, and safety had melted my heart for years. I was ready for this new adventure with him. More than ready. I was desperate for it, because Damon was supposed to be my way out. He was supposed to be the one person in this pack who looked at me and saw more than the girl everyone else could ignore.
My thoughts came back to reality as my door was slammed open, making my entire body flinch before I could stop myself. My evil stepmother entered the room, carrying a dress and a pair of high heels, her expression already twisted with irritation, as if I had personally offended her by existing.
She moved like a wolf stalking her prey as she dropped a faded red gown and a pair of chipped black stilettos onto my bed. The dress was plain, old, and wrinkled in places where it had clearly been shoved into the back of a closet and forgotten. One of the straps looked like it had been repaired in a hurry, and the fabric had lost most of the shine it probably had when someone else first wore it.
I looked up into her brown calculating eyes and waited for the blows to come.
“No punishments for you tonight, Selene. We can’t take any more chances of you embarrassing us tonight. Now hurry up and put this on, and for the love of the Moon Goddess, do something with your tangled mess of red hair.”
“Yes, Mrs. Helena,” I said quietly, making sure my head was down, and I was staring at the floor. I knew after years of dealing with her and my stepsister’s abuse that the less you speak and the more you make yourself look tiny, the less the beatings will be.
Helena stayed there for a moment longer, watching me like she wanted me to argue. Like she needed me to give her one reason to ruin the one night I had been holding on to for years. I didn’t give her that reason. I kept my shoulders rounded, my hands still, and my eyes lowered until she finally turned away with a sharp breath.
“Hurry up,” she snapped. “Mira is already dressed, and unlike you, she actually knows how to look presentable.”
Then she left, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the mirror on my wall.
Only after she was gone did I let myself breathe again.
I slipped the dress on and put on the shoes, trying not to think about how different this moment should have felt. A girl’s mating ceremony was supposed to be magical. It was supposed to be filled with excitement, laughter, and nervous smiles. It was supposed to feel like the beginning of something beautiful.
Mine was a faded red gown, chipped black stilettos, and the lingering fear that if I took too long, Helena would come back upstairs and decide I deserved punishment after all.
Standing in front of the mirror, I could only imagine how beautiful I’d look if these items had been brand new. If the dress had been made for me. If the shoes didn’t pinch my toes. If my reflection didn’t look like a girl trying to pretend she wasn’t terrified.
I sat down in front of the mirror, grabbed the concealer, and began applying it to cover any blemishes or scratches on my face—a little eyeliner, then finishing it off with a blush lipstick. My hands trembled a few times, but I forced them steady. Damon wouldn’t want to see me looking weak tonight. He had waited for this too. He had promised me that after tonight, no one would ever treat me this way again.
I held on to that thought as tightly as I could.
I did my best with my brush and some hairspray as I pinned my hair back into a half-up, half-down hairstyle. My red hair fought me the entire time, curling around my fingers and slipping free from the pins. Still, eventually, I managed to make it look presentable enough that Helena wouldn’t accuse me of embarrassing the family.
Standing up, I twirled and took a deep breath. For one small second, I let myself pretend the dress was beautiful, the shoes were perfect, and the girl in the mirror was about to walk into the beginning of her happy ending.
This was as good as it was going to get.
I grabbed my purse and made my way down the stairs to where everyone was already waiting.
The second I reached the bottom step, I knew exactly what Helena had meant.
Mira stood in the center of the foyer like she had been placed there for everyone to admire. Her dress was stunning, a soft silver gown that hugged her body in all the right places before falling around her legs like moonlight. Tiny crystals had been sewn into the fabric, catching every bit of light from the chandelier above us. Her blonde hair had been curled perfectly, pinned back with pearl clips, and her makeup made her look soft, delicate, and flawless.
Helena stood beside her, adjusting one of Mira’s curls with a proud smile on her face.
That smile disappeared the moment she looked at me.
“Well,” Helena said, dragging her eyes over me from head to toe. “At least you tried.”
Mira’s lips curved into a small smile, but there was nothing kind about it. She looked me over the same way her mother had, only slower, making sure I understood the difference between us without her having to say it. She was the daughter they wanted everyone to see. I was the one they wanted hidden in the corner, plain enough not to draw attention, quiet enough not to ruin anything.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced myself not to look down.
Tonight wasn’t about Mira.
Tonight was about Damon.
Once Damon saw me, none of this would matter. Once he took my hand in front of the pack and accepted me as his mate, Helena and Mira could glare all they wanted. They wouldn’t be able to touch me anymore. They wouldn’t be able to shove me into old dresses and make me feel like I was lucky to breathe the same air as them.
I kept repeating that to myself as we left the house and made our way to the Bloodhowl mating ceremony.
The ceremony was being held in the main pack hall, the largest building in Bloodhowl territory. It had been decorated with black banners, silver candles, and fresh white flowers, filling the air with a sweet scent that made my stomach twist. Wolves from every rank had gathered inside, their voices blending into one loud, excited hum. Tonight was sacred. Tonight was when bonds were honored, futures were announced, and families gained power through the mates their children chose or accepted.
I stepped inside behind Helena, Mira, and my father, trying to ignore the way people looked at us.
No.
The way they looked at Mira.
Their eyes followed her dress, her smile, her perfect golden hair. They whispered about how beautiful she looked and how lucky any male would be to claim her. A few glanced at me, but their gazes passed over me quickly, like I was nothing more than a shadow trailing behind my family.
I told myself it didn’t matter.
Damon mattered.
I found him near the front of the hall, standing beside his father, Alpha Ronan.
My heart squeezed the second I saw him.
Damon looked every bit like the future Alpha of Bloodhowl. Broad shoulders, dark hair, expensive suit, and that confident smile that had made my knees weak since I was fifteen. He was laughing at something one of his friends said, completely at ease, completely beautiful, completely mine.
At least, he was supposed to be.
I waited for him to look at me. I waited for his eyes to soften the way they used to when we were alone. I waited for some secret smile, some small sign that he remembered every promise he had made.
But when Damon finally looked across the room, his eyes didn’t stop on me.
They went straight to Mira.
The breath in my lungs caught.
Mira smiled at him.
Not a polite smile. Not a friendly smile.
A knowing one that seemed to promise something.
Something cold moved through my chest, but I shoved it down before it could become fear. I was being stupid. Damon was the Alpha’s son. Of course people looked at him. Of course girls smiled at him. Mira smiled at everyone when she thought someone important was watching.
That didn’t mean anything.
It couldn’t mean anything, right?
The ceremony began a few minutes later, and the entire hall fell silent as Elder Marcellus stepped onto the raised platform at the front. His robes brushed the floor, and the silver mark of the Moon Goddess hung from his neck, gleaming under the candlelight.
“Tonight,” he began, his voice carrying through the hall, “we gather beneath the blessing of the Moon Goddess to honor the sacred bonds she has written into our blood. A mate is not merely a companion. A mate is duty. Loyalty. Strength. The other half of the soul.”
My hands curled together in front of me.
The other half of the soul.
That was what Damon was supposed to be.
Elder Marcellus continued speaking, but the words blurred around me as my eyes moved back to Damon. He stood tall beside Alpha Ronan, his face calm, his jaw tight. Alpha Ronan stood beside him like a carved statue, powerful and silent, his presence heavy enough to make even the loudest wolves lower their voices when they passed him.
Everyone feared Ronan.
Everyone respected him.
He had ruled Bloodhowl for years with the kind of strength that didn’t need shouting. He was older than Damon, harder than Damon, and nothing like the young males who fought for attention with loud voices and cruel smiles. Alpha Ronan didn’t need to demand obedience. Wolves gave it to him because something ancient in their blood told them to bow before power.
I had barely spoken to him in my life.
To him, I was probably just Helena’s unwanted stepdaughter. The quiet red-haired girl always standing too far back, always looking at the floor, always trying not to be noticed.
Elder Marcellus called Damon forward first.
My heart started pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat.
This was it.
This was the moment.
Damon stepped onto the platform, and the room seemed to hold its breath with me. He looked out over the pack, his face unreadable. Then his eyes finally found mine.
For one beautiful, painful second, I forgot how to breathe.
I waited for warmth.
I waited for love.
I waited for the boy who had held my hand behind the training hall and promised me that one day he would make me Luna.
Instead, Damon looked at me like I was a mistake he had finally decided to correct.
A strange ringing filled my ears.
“Selene,” he said, his voice clear enough for every wolf in the hall to hear.
My feet moved before my mind could catch up. I stepped forward, my palms damp, my heart cracking open with hope even though his eyes were cold. People turned to look at me, and I could feel every stare landing on my faded dress, my chipped shoes, my red hair, my trembling hands.
I climbed onto the platform and stood in front of him.
Damon didn’t reach for me.
He didn’t smile.
He didn’t even lower his voice.
“I, Damon, future Alpha of Bloodhowl, reject you, Selene, as my fated mate.”
The world stopped.
For a moment, I didn’t understand the words.
They had entered the room. They had touched my ears. They had wrapped around my throat. But they made no sense, because Damon couldn’t have said them. Damon, who had kissed me in secret. Damon, who had told me to wait for him. Damon, who had promised that every bruise, every insult, every lonely night would be worth it once I stood beside him.
A sharp pain tore through my chest as the bond reacted.
I gasped and staggered back, pressing one hand against my heart. It felt like invisible claws had sunk into me and started pulling. My wolf cried out inside me, confused and wounded, clawing at my ribs like she could force him to take the words back.
Whispers exploded through the hall.
Someone laughed.
Helena didn’t even try to hide her smile.
Mira stepped forward before I could speak, lifting her chin like she had been waiting for this exact moment all night.
Damon turned away from me and held out his hand to her.
“I choose Mira as my mate,” he announced. “She is the female I want beside me when I become Alpha.”
The pain in my chest became something worse than heartbreak.
Humiliation.
It crawled over my skin as Mira placed her hand in his and stepped up beside him in her beautiful silver dress. She looked perfect there. Polished. Wanted. Chosen.
Everything I wasn’t.
The pack erupted in shocked murmurs, but no one stopped him. No one defended me. No one asked how the future Alpha could reject his fated mate in front of the entire Bloodhowl pack and choose her stepsister instead.
I looked at Damon, waiting for even a flicker of regret.
There was none.
“Accept it, Selene,” Damon said, his voice lower now, but still loud enough for the closest wolves to hear. “Keep what little dignity you have left.”
Dignity.
The word almost made me laugh, but my throat was too tight. My hands were shaking at my sides, and my wolf was still howling inside me, begging me not to say the words that would sever what the Moon Goddess had made.
If I accepted the rejection, it would be over.
Damon would be free.
Mira would win.
And I would be exactly what Helena had always said I was.
Nothing.
I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.
Damon’s expression hardened. “Selene.”
The command in his voice scraped against something raw inside me, and for the first time that night, something other than pain stirred beneath my fear. Anger. Small, weak, barely alive, but there.
He had dragged me onto this platform to destroy me. He had let me believe in him for years. He had watched me walk into this room in a faded dress while Mira stood there dressed like a queen, knowing exactly what he planned to do.
And now he wanted me to make it easy for him.
I lifted my chin, even though it felt like it might break me.
Before I could say a single word, a chair scraped loudly across the floor.
The hall went silent.
Damon went still.
Mira’s smile vanished.
Every head turned as Alpha Ronan rose from his seat.
He didn’t move quickly. He didn’t have to. The entire room shifted around him the second he stood, like even the air understood that something powerful had decided to make itself known.
His dark eyes moved from Damon to Mira, then finally to me.
I forgot how to breathe for an entirely different reason.
Alpha Ronan stepped onto the platform, his expression carved from stone and fury. Damon straightened beside Mira, but for the first time in my life, I saw uncertainty flicker across his face.
“Father,” Damon started.
Ronan didn’t look at him. “Enough.”
One word.
That was all it took.
Damon’s mouth shut.
The silence that followed was so heavy I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
Alpha Ronan stopped in front of me, close enough that I had to tilt my head back to look at him. Up close, he was even more intimidating than he was from across the room. Broad, controlled, powerful in a way Damon had only ever pretended to be. His scent wrapped around me, dark cedar and smoke, steadying something inside me that had been seconds from falling apart.
His gaze dropped briefly to my trembling hands, then lifted back to my face.
“You have not accepted the rejection,” he said.
It wasn’t a question, but I answered anyway, my voice barely above a whisper. “No.”
Something unreadable moved through his eyes.
Then Alpha Ronan turned to face the entire pack.
“If Damon is foolish enough to reject what the Moon Goddess placed before him,” Ronan said, his voice calm and deadly, “then he is not worthy of keeping her.”
A ripple moved through the hall.
Damon’s face paled. “Father, what are you doing?”
Ronan ignored him.
My stomach twisted as Alpha Ronan reached for his hand. For one terrifying second, I thought he was going to force me to accept the rejection in front of everyone. I thought he was going to finish what Damon had started and make sure there was nothing left of me by the end of the night.
Instead, he removed the heavy Alpha ring from his finger.
The entire room seemed to stop breathing.
The ring was black and silver, marked with the Bloodhowl crest, the symbol of his power, his bloodline, his rule. Every wolf in the pack knew what it meant. Every wolf knew that ring did not leave Alpha Ronan’s hand unless he wanted the entire world to understand exactly what he was saying.
He turned back to me.
My heart slammed against my ribs as he took my hand, his fingers warm and firm around mine.
Then Alpha Ronan placed his Alpha ring in my palm before the entire pack.
Gasps filled the hall.
Mira looked like someone had slapped her.
Damon took one furious step forward. “No.”
Alpha Ronan closed my fingers around the ring, his gaze never leaving mine.
“Yes,” he said, his voice low enough for me, but strong enough for everyone to hear. “Selene will not leave this platform rejected. She will leave it chosen.”
My knees nearly gave out beneath me.
Ronan turned his head, his eyes sweeping over Damon, Mira, Helena, and every stunned wolf watching us.
“From this moment on,” Alpha Ronan declared, “Selene is my chosen mate.”

The Rejected Luna’s Rise
Luna Ariana Volkstane slid the formal rejection request across the table. "Let's end this bond. It's better for you, me, and your first love."
He just smirked. "You want me to reject you? You think you can break our bond that easily?"
So she did. Ariana cut ties with him completely, poured herself into her career, and rose to global fame as a legendary healer, her knowledge of rare herbs, wolf anatomy, and ancient magic sought after across continents.
The powerful suitors lined up. The Alpha of an overseas empire whispered, "Ariana, hurry up and perform the severing ritual. I can't wait to claim you." A powerful pack leader vowed, "I'll be there with you the day you break the bond." A legendary wolf attorney promised, "I'll handle your rejection case with the pack council myself."
Ariana just rubbed her temples. It's not that she didn't want the split, she wanted it more than anything, it's just that the Alpha she was mated to refused to let go.
Finally, she announced, "Whoever can officially get me rejected, I'll put you at the head table of my bond-breaking celebration."
Not long after, Alpha Damian was served the official rejection request right in the middle of an emergency pack council meeting. That same afternoon, he was attacked by rogues at the gates of his own territory.
When Ariana showed up at the pack infirmary with healing herbs, she repeated calmly, "Let's sever the mate bond. It's better for you, me, and everyone else."
But the cold, untouchable Alpha pulled her into his arms, his eyes blood-red with fury. "You want me to reject you? Over my dead body."

Will Aria choose revenge, or will she find a love greater than the betrayal that destroyed her?
