Chapter 1
Chelsea Stewart stood quietly in front of Blackthorn Academy’s gates, gripping the straps of her backpack tightly as students walked past her. The school looked even bigger in real life than it did in pictures. Tall buildings surrounded perfectly cut lawns, expensive cars lined the entrance, and students in polished uniforms moved through the campus like they belonged to an entirely different world.
Maybe they did.
Chelsea took a slow breath before forcing herself to walk forward. She had worked too hard to get here. One scholarship exam had changed her future, and she refused to let fear ruin it now.
Still, the stares started almost immediately.
Some students glanced at her simple clothes before whispering quietly to each other. Others looked openly curious, like they were trying to figure out how someone like her had ended up at Blackthorn Academy.
Chelsea kept her head up and ignored all of them.
She was used to people judging her before they knew her.
Inside the administration building, the atmosphere felt even more intimidating. Marble floors reflected the bright lights above while expensive artwork decorated the walls. Everything about the academy screamed money and power.
Chelsea approached the registration desk quietly and handed over her documents.
The woman behind the desk scanned the papers before her expression changed slightly.
“Oh,” she said. “Scholarship student.”
The words were not rude exactly, but the tone behind them made Chelsea uncomfortable anyway.
“You’ll find your orientation schedule in the hall,” the woman continued as she handed the papers back.
Chelsea thanked her softly and turned away, but she still caught the whispers around her.
“That’s the scholarship girl?”
“She actually got in?”
“She doesn’t even look rich.”
Chelsea clenched her jaw and kept walking.
If people wanted to underestimate her, fine.
She would prove them wrong eventually.
As she entered the main hall, she noticed the atmosphere shift suddenly around her. Students straightened slightly while conversations lowered.
Chelsea frowned in confusion before turning toward the staircase.
A boy was walking down slowly, completely calm despite the attention surrounding him. Dark hair fell neatly across his forehead, and his expression remained unreadable as students moved aside for him automatically.
Chelsea immediately recognized the type.
Rich. Untouchable. Arrogant.
The boy’s eyes landed on her briefly before he continued walking forward.
Unfortunately, they both reached the bottom of the staircase at the same time.
Neither moved aside.
The silence around them became awkward almost instantly.
Finally, the boy spoke.
“You’re blocking the way.”
Chelsea looked around at the wide empty space surrounding them before looking back at him. “There’s literally space everywhere.”
A few nearby students looked horrified by her response.
The boy studied her quietly for a moment. “You’re new here.”
Chelsea crossed her arms slightly. “Very observant.”
Something almost amused flashed briefly across his face before disappearing again.
“You should be careful,” he said calmly.
“And you should learn basic manners.”
The surrounding students looked even more shocked now.
Chelsea did not understand why everyone seemed so terrified of him, and honestly, she did not care.
The boy stepped closer slightly, his expression unreadable. “Most people here know when to stop talking.”
Chelsea held his gaze stubbornly. “Good for them.”
For a second, neither of them looked away.
Then surprisingly, the boy gave the faintest smile before stepping around her and continuing down the hallway.
Chelsea watched him leave with annoyance already building inside her chest.
Who even was that guy?
“You seriously don’t know who that is?” a girl nearby asked suddenly.
Chelsea turned toward her. “Should I?”
“That’s Ryan Ashford.”
The name clearly meant something important because several students immediately looked impressed.
Chelsea, however, only rolled her eyes internally.
Of course he had that kind of name.
The rest of orientation passed slowly. Chelsea tried focusing on the information being presented, but whispers still followed her constantly. By the end of the morning, she was already exhausted from pretending not to notice them.
Later that afternoon, all first-year students were gathered inside the assembly hall for the entrance ranking announcement.
Chelsea sat near the back quietly, not expecting much.
The principal stepped onto the stage and began announcing the names of students who achieved the highest entrance scores.
“These students will automatically qualify for the Elite Scholars Program,” he explained.
The room immediately became more attentive.
Chelsea had heard about the program before. Special opportunities, sponsorships, internships, leadership training. For students like her, it could change everything.
But she still did not expect to hear her own name.
“Chelsea Stewart.”
Her head lifted instantly.
For a second, she genuinely thought she had heard wrong.
Whispers exploded throughout the hall almost immediately.
“The scholarship student?”
“No way.”
Chelsea felt every eye in the room turn toward her.
Before she could fully process it, another name followed.
“Ryan Ashford.”
This time, the reaction was completely different. Students applauded quietly while others nodded like they had expected it all along.
Ryan sat several rows ahead, completely calm.
Then the principal looked down at the paper again.
“And for the first time in five years,” he continued, “two students have achieved equal scores.”
The room fell silent.
Chelsea’s stomach tightened slightly.
“The highest-ranking students this year are Ryan Ashford and Chelsea Stewart.”
Shock spread across the hall.
Chelsea slowly looked up.
At the exact same moment, Ryan turned around to look directly at her.
For the first time since meeting him earlier, his expression changed slightly.
Not amused.
Interested.
Like she had suddenly become something worth paying attention to.
“The Elite Scholars Program requires students to work in pairs throughout the academic year,” the principal continued. “As the top-ranking students, Ryan Ashford and Chelsea Stewart will serve as partners.”
The room erupted into whispers again.
Chelsea stared at the stage in disbelief.
This had to be some kind of joke.
Across the hall, Ryan continued watching her calmly before finally speaking quietly enough that only she could hear.
“This is going to be interesting.”
Chelsea met his gaze without backing down.
“No,” she replied calmly. “It’s going to be a disaster.”
And for the first time, Ryan Ashford smiled properly.
