Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The city didn't sleep. It just changed its sins.

Zara Okafor knew this the way she knew torque specs and tire pressure instinctively, in her bones, without needing to think about it twice. At 11:47 PM, the Meridian District hummed with a different kind of life. Street vendors folded into shadows. Legitimate businesses pulled their shutters. And underneath the overpass at Junction Nine, where the concrete smelled of rubber and gasoline and old rain, thirty-two riders sat astride machines worth more than most people's annual salaries and waited.

Zara didn't wait. She checked.

She moved along the left flank of her bike a 2019 Ducati Panigale she'd stripped down and rebuilt from the frame outward pressing two fingers against the rear brake caliper, feeling for heat that shouldn't be there. Nothing. She checked the throttle cable tension, the clutch bite point, the fuel line running beneath the tank. Everything spoke back to her in the language she trusted most. Metal. Precision. Truth.

"Black Pulse." The nickname drifted over from a cluster of riders to her right. She didn't look up. "You actually entering the full circuit tonight? Crestwood to the Southern Docks. Eighteen miles."

"I'm already entered," she said flatly.

"That's four district crossings. Enforcement runs two of those zones on race nights."

"I know."

A pause. Then, quieter: "You're not scared."

It wasn't a question. It was the thing people always arrived at surprise, threaded through with something that wanted to be admiration but landed closer to unease. Zara Okafor in her matte-black helmet and unmarked leathers made people uncomfortable. She didn't perform. She didn't trash-talk or rev unnecessarily or play to the crowd that always gathered at the start line.

She just won.

She pulled her helmet down, sealed the visor, and swung onto the Ducati in one fluid motion.

The starter a short man named Crib, who had three outstanding warrants and an encyclopedic knowledge of city drainage routes raised a red cloth. Around her, thirty-one engines climbed to a roar. Zara's sat at a steady, controlled idle. She felt the vibration travel up through her thighs, her spine, her hands. This was the only place the noise in her head went quiet. The only place she didn't think about Dami.

The cloth dropped.

She was already gone.

The first six miles were clean. She ran third deliberately. Zara never led from the front in the early stretch. She watched. She read the road, the pack, the micro-decisions other riders made under pressure. By the second district crossing she'd identified the three who would push hardest and the two who were riding with something to prove, which made them unpredictable and therefore dangerous.

She moved to second at the Crestfield flyover.

First at the river junction.

The Southern Docks were four minutes away.

That was when the motorcycle appeared in her peripheral black, unmarked, running with no race number on its fairing. It had been sitting just outside the pack since the start, she realised. Not racing. Pacing. Watching.

She filed the information away and pushed harder.

The sabotaged oil slick appeared at the bend before the warehouse district. Someone had laid it across two thirds of the road fresh, almost invisible in the wet dark. The rider directly ahead of her hit it at seventy miles per hour.

The crash was spectacular and terrible. The bike went sideways, sparks screaming off the tarmac, and Zara had 0.4 seconds to respond. She did what no one else in that field would have done she went toward the inside, threading the gap between the fallen bike and the concrete barrier with centimetres to spare, feeling the heat of the sparks against her left knee.

She came out the other side upright and intact.

She did not come out with her visor.

The barrier had caught it a freak contact, a latch failure she'd serviced two weeks ago and apparently not serviced well enough. The helmet stayed on. The visor tore away.

Cold air hit her face like a verdict.

She was still moving at sixty-eight miles per hour with the finish line two hundred metres ahead and the entire crowd at the Southern Docks watching the feed from the overhead cameras when she crossed it first, undeniable, face completely exposed to every lens pointed at that finish line.

Zara Okafor. Twenty-six years old. Workshop owner, endurance circuit ghost, and the woman who had spent fourteen months building an anonymous reputation specifically so that no one would ever connect her name to these races.

The silence that followed her stop lasted exactly three seconds.

Then the crowd identified her, and everything changed.

She had her helmet off and was walking toward her bike when he appeared. Not rushing. Not shouting. Just there, the way powerful things tended to simply materialise rather than arrive a tall man in a dark jacket, moving through the crowd with the kind of stillness that made people step aside without understanding why they'd done it.

He stopped two metres from her.

Late thirties. Dark eyes that catalogued everything without appearing to move. A jaw that looked like it had been decided upon rather than grown. He had the particular quality of someone who had never once in his adult life been caught off guard.

She'd seen his photograph. Once, on a thumb drive that Dami had hidden inside a gutted motorcycle manual three weeks before he died.

Ronan Vale. Operations. Don't trust them, Z. Don't go near them.

"Zara Okafor," Ronan Vale said. His voice was low, unhurried, like a man reading a figure from a balance sheet. "That was an exceptional piece of riding."

She held his gaze. "I don't know you."

"You do," he said simply. "And you know who I represent." He tilted his head, a fraction of a degree. "You've breached three Dominion-backed race agreements tonight. The sponsors have a claim. There are processes for these situations."

"I didn't sign any Dominion agreements."

"The organizers did. On behalf of all entered riders." A pause. "That's not a technicality. That's an invoice."

Around them, the crowd had thinned instinctively. People who operated in this world understood the shape of a conversation like this one even when they couldn't hear the words.

Zara looked at Ronan Vale at the man her brother had warned her about with his last coherent message and felt the particular cold clarity that came to her in moments where everything mattered.

"How much?" she said.

He told her.

The number wasn't designed to be paid. It was designed to be impossible. She could see that in the way he said it not cruelly, not triumphantly, just factually. The way you'd read a number off a contract to someone who'd already signed.

"And if I can't pay it?"

Ronan Vale looked at her for a long moment, as though he was completing a calculation she wasn't privy to.

"I have a proposal," he said. "Come to the address tomorrow morning. Eight o'clock." He held out a card plain, black, a street address embossed in grey. "If you don't come, we'll discuss the other options. They're less comfortable."

She took the card.

He walked away without another word, disappearing into the dark at the edge of the dock with that same unhurried certainty as though he already knew exactly what she would decide.

She looked down at the card in her hand.

Her workshop the one place that was entirely hers, the one thing she had built from nothing after Dami died was three miles east.

She didn't know yet that by the time she got there, it would already be burning.

But if Ronan Vale hadn't ordered the fire then who had

"You want my forgiveness?" he asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous timbre.

Before I could answer, he moved closer, suddenly looming over me, his face inches from mine. I felt my breath caught, my lips parting in surprise.

"Then this is the price for speaking ill of me to others," he murmured, nipping my lower lip before claiming my mouth in a real kiss. It began as punishment but quickly transformed into something else entirely as I responded, my initial rigidity melting into compliance, then active participation.

My breathing accelerated, small sounds escaping my throat as he explored my body. His touches were both punishment and pleasure, drawing shudders from me that I thought he felt reverberating through his own body.

My nightgown had ridden up, his hands discovering more of mine with each caress. We were both lost in sensation, rational thought receding with each passing second...

Three years ago, to fulfill the wish of his grandmother, I was forced to marry Derek Wells, the second son of the family that had adopted me for ten years. He didn't love me, but I had secretly loved him all along.

Now, the three-year contractual marriage is about to end, but I feel that some kind of sentiment has developed between Derek and me that neither of us is willing to admit. I'm not sure if my feelings are right, but I know that we can't resist each other physically...
