Introduction
Margot’s question left me speechless.
I thought that as long as I tried hard enough, as long as I kept holding on, we could find our way back to the love we once had. But the moment a stranger caught me in his arms on a rainy night in New York, I realized some cracks had already formed long before I noticed them.
My name is Solange Sinclair, and I am a soloist at NYM Ballet. I sacrificed my youth, my time, and everything I had to stand on the stage I dreamed of. Tomorrow night, I will perform Giselle at Lincoln Center as the leading dancer for the first time in my career—the closest I have ever been to achieving my dream.
But right before my debut, my life changes completely because of an unexpected encounter.
Valentin Radu.
A mysterious, powerful, and dangerous man. He possesses an aura that makes him impossible to ignore, along with wealth and influence capable of changing everything. When we first meet, he is only the stranger who catches me when I nearly fall in the rain.
But later, he becomes the only person sitting in an empty theater, watching me complete a performance that everyone else had already given up on.
When the storm leaves the audience seats almost empty and everyone believes my first leading role is destined to fail, Valentin remains there until the very end, watching me dance the story of Giselle.
He sees the dancer on the stage.
He also sees the woman behind the performance—the woman who has been slowly losing herself in a relationship where she is constantly overlooked, yet still refuses to abandon her dreams.
Meanwhile, my boyfriend Tyler makes me question whether what we are holding onto is truly love… or simply a habit we are afraid to break.
One man makes me feel safe.
One man makes me forget who I am.
And one unexpected opportunity is about to change the course of my life forever.
Chapter 1
Solange
Tomorrow was opening night.
Margot and I were sitting in the audience seats beneath the rehearsal stage, having wrapped up our own portion of the run-through a few minutes earlier. We could have left, but it was raining outside and Margot hadn't brought an umbrella, and I was waiting for someone. So the two of us stayed without any particular discussion about it, talking quietly while we watched the dancers onstage continue their blocking.
The company rehearsing now was NYM Ballet's spring production of Giselle, slated to perform at Lincoln Center. I was cast as the A-role — the lead, Giselle herself. It was the first time I'd been given a principal position since joining the company as a soloist, and after spending several months working through the initial rush of finally being the lead, what remained was something I couldn't quite name — a tremor in my chest that sat somewhere between nerves and excitement, and refused to be one or the other.
"So," Margot said, nudging my shoulder with her elbow, "your Tyler is coming tonight."
"Yeah, he just texted." I kept my eyes on the corps formation onstage, silently counting the duration of their arabesques. "He'll be here soon."
"When you say soon, you mean —"
"Downstairs soon."
She let out a short, derisive sound. "That's his third visit this month, isn't it."
"Second."
"Whatever." She gave me a sideways look that didn't bother concealing its displeasure. "He can fly to New York twice a month, but when you text him on a normal day, he somehow can't manage to reply before noon?"
"He's busy."
"Busy with what?"
I didn't answer, because I genuinely didn't know. Tyler and I had never had the kind of closeness that most couples seemed to take for granted. He called when he felt like calling, showed up when he felt like showing up. Especially since Valentine's Day, he'd become even more unreachable — he'd send a message half a day or a day before arriving to let me know he was coming, but outside of that, he rarely reached out first. There were stretches of more than a week when we didn't speak at all.
"He's a junior, his coursework is demanding," I said. "And he's used to life in Georgia. The pace down there is different from New York."
"Right." Margot pulled her bag from the empty seat beside her, the contempt on her face entirely undisguised. "He's adapted to the kind of pace where his Georgia credit card mysteriously stops working the moment he lands in New York. That pattern is remarkably consistent."
"Margot —"
"Are you actually happy when he comes?" she cut me off. "Not relieved, not used to it — happy?"
I opened my mouth and found nothing there.
"You're not," she said, before I could try again. "You're not happy. You've just gotten used to him."
Onstage, someone's timing broke, and the formation scattered before pulling itself back together. I watched the correction happen without saying anything.
She was right. His visits didn't make me happy. If anything, they made the pressure worse.
My phone rang.
Tyler.
Margot saw the name and said nothing, only smiled at me in a way that communicated everything she'd already said. I pressed the phone to my ear. "Are you almost here?"
"Almost," he said, his tone loose and unhurried. "Left later than I meant to, took a cab. My card's been reported lost, so I'm getting a replacement — I charged the ride to your card. Hope that's fine."
"Of course," I said. "Don't worry about it."
"It's raining. Come down and meet me — west entrance, the corner of Broadway and Sixty-second. Wait for me there."
He hung up before I could respond.
I gave Margot a small wave, grabbed my bag, and headed toward the stairwell exit.
The rain outside was heavier than I'd expected. I opened my umbrella and paused on the covered steps to orient myself. Tyler had said Broadway and Sixty-second, but I'd come out through the south entrance, and there was a stretch of ground between the two. I hitched my bag higher on my shoulder and walked into the rain.
The plaza stones were slick with water, shallow pools spreading flat across the surface. I followed the outer wall of the building westward, one hand holding the umbrella, the other scrolling through the location Tyler had sent.
My phone rang again.
"I'm almost —" I fumbled to answer it, nearly losing my grip on both my bag and the phone at once. The umbrella tilted with the motion and swung across my line of sight.
"How much longer are you going to make me wait."
"I'm heading west, I'm almost —"
"I'm already here, and you're still somewhere on the street." His voice had gone flat with impatience. "I told you exactly where to stand. It's twenty yards from where you were."
"I came out the wrong exit, I just need another minute —"
"Forget it," he said. "Just get here. Don't make me come find you."
I said yes and quickened my pace, already rehearsing in my head how I'd explain the wrong exit, already bracing for the shape of his reaction. When I reached the corner and turned, I wasn't thinking about anything in front of me.
Which was how I walked directly into someone.
The collision knocked the umbrella clean out of my hand. My footing gave way and I felt myself tipping backward — and then two hands caught me firmly at the waist, steadying me before I could fall. The sudden upward jerk of my chin brought my lips into brief contact with the stubble along his jaw, a faint, electric graze that locked every muscle in my body at once.
His face entered my field of vision before I'd had a chance to prepare for it.
He was considerably taller than me, enough that I had to tip my head back farther than usual. Dark brown hair, features carved with the kind of deliberate depth that suggested old-world precision — handsome in a way that was singular and slightly out of place, the sort of face that stayed with you without your permission. He looked down at me with an expression that held the faintest trace of amusement and no surprise whatsoever, as though this exact situation were something he'd been quietly expecting.
The rain seemed to fall somewhere far away. I could smell tobacco on him, and beneath it something quieter — green and woody and unhurried — the kind of scent that didn't announce itself until it had already settled. My face was hot. My heartbeat had the uneven, stumbling quality of missing a step in the dark.
He held my gaze, and his lips parted slightly, as though he were about to say something —
"Solange!"
Tyler's voice broke through from behind me.
I turned. He was standing a few feet away, his eyes landing on my face for barely a second before moving to the man beside me. He reached out and closed his hand around my wrist, pulling me behind him in a single motion.
"What is this."
"I didn't see him — it was my fault, I turned the corner without looking —"
"Without looking." He repeated the phrase as though he were testing its weight. "I sent you to meet me, you came out the wrong exit, and I had to walk through the rain to find you. And when I found you —" He paused, and the look he gave me was the particular one he reserved for moments like this, the one that made everything feel already decided. "You were in a man's arms with your chin up and your face flushed. If I hadn't called out, were you planning to kiss him?"
"Tyler, that's not — I almost fell, he caught me —"
"You always have an explanation," he said. "I'm only telling you what I saw."
I didn't know where to look. My face was burning, the heat reaching all the way to my ears. There were people around us, and he had said it all out loud — said it in front of this stranger — and the way he'd framed it made my explanation feel like further evidence of something, as though the version he'd described were the one with more claim to being true.
The humiliation of it was total. It closed over me like water.
Then an umbrella appeared at the edge of my vision.
The man had bent down at some point and retrieved the umbrella I'd dropped. He stepped around Tyler without acknowledging him and held it out toward me, his attention directed at me alone. He asked, in a voice that was entirely level, "Are you all right."
I looked up and met his eyes. They were dark, and the steadiness in them — the quality of his attention as it rested on my face — produced in me, without any explanation I could account for, a feeling of unexpected calm. I took the umbrella with stiff hands and found my voice.
"Thank you — no, I mean, I'm sorry — but thank you," I said. "Both things."
He gave a small, unhurried nod.
Behind me, I heard Tyler make a low, dismissive sound. Before Tyler could say anything further, the man looked past me and addressed him directly.
"You let a woman walk through the rain to bring you an umbrella, and then you dressed her down for it on a public street." He held Tyler's gaze without any apparent effort. "Does that make you feel good about yourself."

After One Night with the Alpha
I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
