Chapter 1
Mia Jones realized that her hands were tied to the bed frame.
Despite her struggles, the rope wound around her wrists became tighter.
“Arghh…”
She groaned and blinked her eyes as she tried to adapt to her dim surroundings.
Then, she examined the area around her.
A towering silhouette stood at the foot of the bed, peering down at her. The sparse dots of light within the room seemed to converge within his eyes.
“Who are you? You… what are you planning to do?” Mia questioned cautiously. She did her best to suppress the impounded fear and dread surging in her heart.
“Since you’re already here, what’s the point in feigning ignorance?” the man said. His voice was low and husky. Within the darkness, she was unable to make out his appearance. She could only sense his icy eyes roaming over her skin. His gaze was ravaging and predatory, causing her to feel exceptionally unsettled.
A dangerous aura shrouded the entire figure of that man.
Before she could calm her tumultuous state of mind, the man kissed her, as though he were directing a ravaging assault against a city.
“Get lost!”
Eleanor Jones was the one who had asked her to deliver the wine. Was she plotting to harm her…?!
She… was screwed!
When she woke up, it was already three in the morning. Since the man lying next to her was still asleep, she took the opportunity to scramble out of the opulent room in a fluster.
With much difficulty, Mia returned to the small apartment she had rented. She glanced at her phone. She had a few dozen missed calls from her adoptive father, which gave her a headache.
She placed her phone down and took a seat on her bed before passing out. That preposterous scene from earlier flashed through her mind again. It was almost as though she were in a dream where fantasy could no longer be distinguished from reality.
Why… Why was she so unfortunate as to encounter such a horrific situation?!
She was merely delivering a bottle of wine. Why had that man…?
Who was that man?
Was this someone that Eleanor Jones had set her up with?
Heavens. The biological daughter that her adoptive parents had recovered one year ago had truly been scheming to send her toward the road of eternal d*mnation!
Mia used all of her willpower to walk to the bathroom. She ran her eyes over her body, which was stained with blue and purple marks. Soon, tears started to flow as she cried out to herself, “From the start, the Jones Family has always belonged to you. Why bother scheming and plotting against me…?”
In a dramatic and unexpected turn of events eighteen years back, Mia and Eleanor Jones had been mistakenly switched in the delivery suite. By chance, her adoptive parents came across their biological daughter one year ago. The seemingly weak and pitiful Eleanor marked the start of the impending tragedy in Mia’s life.
Her parents claimed that they were both their beloved daughters. The Jones Family’s F&B business chain was assigned to be jointly managed by both sisters. They said something about them being of equal importance to them. But alas, Eleanor was their biological daughter whom they had lost. For years, she had wandered miserably through the world, bearing a multitude of hardships. How could they be compared?
On the surface, Eleanor was innocent and pure. Yet, within the depths of her heart, she constantly longed to get rid of Mia. Mia was already afraid of returning to that two-faced family. Hence, she took on a job at a restaurant to rent a small apartment for herself to live in. She rarely returned home.
That very evening, Eleanor had claimed that a VIP customer of the restaurant was demanding a bottle of expensive wine to be delivered urgently by Mia. In the end…
Even though Mia didn’t want to make assumptions, she did not believe that all of this was simply a coincidence.
No. She definitely had to return and get an explanation from her. She wanted to expose Eleanor’s true nature in front of her parents and peel off her mask of deceptive innocence. Eleanor needed to pay the price.
After washing up and changing her clothes, Mia started the engine of her rusty, second-hand car and drove toward the Jones Family’s villa before dawn.
She wanted to see for herself how Eleanor had schemed against her. More importantly, she wanted to know who that man was!
At the Jones Family’s mansion, Eleanor was inside her bedroom, wearing a pair of pajamas. At that hour, she was still awake, having stayed up the entire night. Her eyes were bloodshot red, her pupils pitch-black.
The phone rang, and the moment she caught sight of the telephone number, she frantically picked up the call.
“How is it? Has the matter been completed?” she asked excitedly in a low voice.
The man on the opposite end spoke in a whisper. He replied in a slightly alarmed voice, saying, “Miss Jones, it failed. We’ve been exposed. Your sister—she… she entered our boss’ room…! Send me thirty thousand dollars. Though I’m afraid that won’t be enough!”
“What?” Eleanor’s voice changed. “Are you talking about… Dylan Greco?!”
