The Night My Husband Took His Assistant to the Gala
Hachimitsu · Ongoing · 10.3k Words
Introduction
For three years, he never gave me a reason to regret it.
Then his new assistant fed him from her fork, took my seat in his car, and appeared on his arm at a charity gala while society reporters called them a perfect match.
I gave my husband three chances to remember that I was his equal. He used every one—then admitted he had only wanted to teach me how a proper wife should behave.
Adrian thought our families' business alliance would keep me beside him.
He forgot that I ran Shaw Group before I ever became Mrs. Cole, and I had never needed a marriage badly enough to be trained by one.
Chapter 1
I chose Adrian Cole for a strategic marriage because he understood boundaries.
————————————————————————————————————
The first time I met Lily Grant, she was dropping a piece of sea bass onto my husband's plate with her own fork.
I stopped just inside the private dining room at the Sterling Club, one hand still on the brass door handle. Twelve Cole Group executives sat around the long table. Adrian was at the far end, jacket off, sleeves rolled once at the wrists. The young woman beside him occupied the chair usually left open for me.
No one had expected me. My dinner with Shaw Group's expansion team had ended early downstairs, and one of our joint-venture directors had mentioned Adrian was hosting his managers upstairs. I had come to say hello.
The room went quiet.
Adrian looked up first. Surprise crossed his face, then the easy smile he had worn through three years of marriage.
That smile had settled more than one tense room. During the merger negotiations that introduced us, Adrian had been the only Cole who never mistook quiet for weakness. When an older director interrupted me three times, Adrian had slid the financial model back across the table and said, "Ms. Shaw was speaking." He had not rescued me; I hadn't needed rescue. He had simply recognized that the room worked better when everyone respected its lines.
Two months later, when both families suggested marriage, I had asked for a private dinner before I answered. We compared schedules, expectations, property, children, and the possibility that affection might never become love. Adrian had listened without posturing. "I don't need a wife to disappear into my life," he had said. "I need a partner with her own."
That answer mattered more than his last name.
"Claire. I thought your meeting would run late."
"So did I."
I greeted the executives by name. The sales director beside the young woman cleared his throat and motioned toward the empty chair on Adrian's other side.
"Ms. Grant, this is Mrs. Cole."
The woman stood at last. She looked twenty-four, maybe twenty-five, with glossy dark hair and the bright, eager expression of someone who had learned that innocence could be useful.
"Mrs. Cole, it's so nice to meet you. I'm Lily Grant, Mr. Cole's new executive assistant."
"Claire is fine."
It wasn't, but I wanted to hear what she would do with the permission.
I took the open seat. Conversation restarted in careful pieces. Adrian ate the fish Lily had given him without comment.
The seat gave me a clear view of the presentation screen at the far wall. A sales forecast remained frozen there, and the figures were wrong. While Lily described the restaurant's wine list to Adrian, I asked the regional vice president why his second-quarter conversion assumptions exceeded every market test we had run. For the next five minutes, the table remembered why I was there. Numbers moved. Excuses shortened. By the time we agreed on a revised forecast, Lily had stopped smiling.
That caught my attention.
Adrian disliked shared utensils, crowded elevators, and strangers touching his belongings. On our third date, he had wiped down the arm of a restaurant chair before sitting. His fastidiousness had been one of the reasons I chose him when our families proposed a marriage between the Cole and Shaw business dynasties.
I understood clean lines. So did he.
Or I had believed he did.
A server set down a platter of chilled shrimp. Lily picked one up, turned it between her fingers, and gave a small laugh.
"I can never get these open without making a mess."
Her eyes moved to Adrian.
He hesitated. Then he pulled on a pair of disposable gloves, peeled the shrimp with quick, neat motions, and placed it on her plate.
I took out my phone under the table and texted our housekeeper.
Please buy ten pounds of fresh shrimp. Cook them and leave them on the dining table.
Mrs. Turner replied with a single question mark. I sent back: Tonight.
Across from me, Lily had started talking again.
"You're so lucky, Claire. Mr. Cole works all the time, but you get to enjoy the life he built. I swear, women like you make the rest of us look bad. Some of us actually have to work for a living."
Two people lowered their glasses at the same time.
I rested my hand beside my plate. "You are new."
Her smile faltered. "I'm sorry?"
"That's the kindest explanation for what you just said."
Color rose under her makeup. "I didn't mean to offend you. I'm just direct. Your clothes, your bag—I assumed Mr. Cole liked taking care of you. He works so hard for everything he has."
I almost admired the confidence it took to insult a stranger while sitting among executives who knew exactly who that stranger was.
The product director saved me the trouble of answering.
"Ms. Shaw is chair and CEO of Shaw Group," he said. "This restaurant is in a Shaw property. Half the people at this table report to her on the joint venture."
Lily looked at Adrian as if he had withheld the information to embarrass her.
He didn't correct that impression. He gave her a measured look instead.
"Apologize to Claire. Then listen more carefully in rooms you don't understand."
"I'm sorry," Lily said, her voice smaller now.
I stood. "Enjoy dinner. My team is waiting for me downstairs."
Adrian rose with me, but I put a hand on his shoulder.
"Finish your meal. I'll see you at home."
His gaze searched mine. I smiled and left before he could decide whether I was angry.
I wasn't angry yet.
I was paying attention.
