Introduction

The day his fiancée returned his ring, his best friend was already holding her hand. His family signed the papers before the ink dried. His guild threw away his name like a receipt.
Ethan Cole was labeled F-Rank — the lowest of the low. Trash. Not worth a second glance.
They were right about one thing: no standard scanner could read his System.
Because the Primordial System doesn't show up on standard scanners.
Now Ethan mops floors in the same building where his enemies make decisions. He listens to conversations no one thinks he can hear. Every night, he descends alone into an unregistered dungeon beneath the city — hunting, growing, and waiting.
They discarded him.
They have no idea what they threw away.

Chapter 1

The day the ring was returned, it didn't rain in Neo Ashveil.

Ethan Cole thought that was the most unjust thing about that entire morning. It should have rained. The sky should have done something to acknowledge that a terrible thing was happening - a few flashes of lightning, a brief storm, anything at all. Instead, the afternoon sun slanted through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Cole family's grand sitting room, casting pale golden streaks across the marble floor, and everything looked offensively, indifferently beautiful.

Claire Ashford set the ring down on the table.

Not into his hand. On the table. As though it were an expired contract being returned, rather than a year and a half of two people's lives.

"My family has reached a decision." Her voice was flat, professional - the kind of tone people used when announcing the outcome of an unpleasant but entirely necessary meeting. "This arrangement is no longer aligned with the direction of both parties."

This arrangement.

Ethan stared at the ring. The small diamond caught the light, sparkling with careless brilliance. He had spent three months of his internship salary on it - saving every coin from a student's thin wallet, eating packed lunches instead of going out, turning down two trips with friends. She knew that. He was certain she knew that.

"Claire—"

"Ethan." She cut him off. Not rudely. Not with malice. Worse - it was the voice of someone who had rehearsed this the night before. "You Awakened at F-Rank. That... changes a great many things. You have to understand that."

He understood. That was precisely the problem - he understood all too well. In a world where an Awakened's power determined everything, an F-Rank wasn't simply weak. An F-Rank was a liability. An F-Rank was something the Ashford family couldn't explain to their business partners over dinner next week.

The back door opened.

Damien Hargrove stepped in, his navy suit cut to perfection, his dark hair still slightly damp from his morning training session. He was an inch taller than Ethan, broader in the shoulders, and he carried himself with the natural ease of someone who had never once doubted that he belonged wherever he was standing.

He stopped when he saw Ethan.

And then - and this was the part Ethan would remember longest about that day - he wore an expression of genuine regret. Not shame. Not guilt. Regret. The kind of regret that belonged to a person who had stepped on someone else's shoulders to reach the finish line first, then turned back to look down with sincere sorrow that you hadn't been fast enough. Sorry about it, truly. But with no intention of changing anything at all.

"Ethan." Damien gave a slow nod. His voice was warm and unhurried, the kind of voice that made everyone in the room instinctively listen. "I want you to know that... this was very difficult for me. For all of us."

Ethan looked at the man who had been his closest friend for a decade - standing beside his former fiancée, in the sitting room of his own family's house, beneath the indifferent afternoon sun of a September day - and understood with perfect, terrible calm that very difficult meant mildly uncomfortable for about fifteen minutes.

He said nothing.

Richard Cole - Ethan's father - entered last, the way a director waits for every actor to be in position before stepping onto the stage. He wore a black suit, the Celestial Vanguard Guild insignia pinned to his left lapel, and regarded his son with the expression of a man reviewing a bad debt in a financial summary.

"You understand the situation," he said. It wasn't a question.

Ethan looked at his father. At Damien. At Claire and the ring on the table and the sunlight on the marble floor.

"I do," he said.

That was the only thing he said for the rest of that meeting. He didn't defend himself. He didn't beg. He didn't get angry — though he recognized, in some small corner of his chest, that he wanted to, that the anger was fair and earned and he had every right to let it rise. But something colder and slower inside him held it down. Not because he was strong. But because he understood that losing his temper in this room, in front of these people, would not change a single thing — and would only give them a better story to tell about how he'd reacted.

He didn't want to be their story.

He stood up, straightened his shirt, and walked out of the room.

No one called after him.

Three hours later, Ethan sat on the hood of a parked truck at the corner of Millhaven Street, eating a sandwich from a roadside cart, letting his phone buzz continuously in his pocket without looking at it.

Eventually, he looked.

Forty-two notifications. The Cole family had moved fast — he had to give them that. They were efficient when sufficiently motivated.

Cole Residences apartment: to be reclaimed within seven days. Please remove personal belongings before 8:00 AM on the 15th.

Family credit card: deactivated effective immediately. Remaining balance has been refunded.

Awakened Training Scholarship at Celestial Vanguard Academy: cancelled due to failure to meet minimum eligibility requirements. The Guild wishes you success in non-combat career paths.

A message from Damien, sent fifteen minutes after Ethan had left the house: "You need time to process this. If you ever need to talk, I'm always here. Anytime, okay?"

Ethan read it three times. Not because he hadn't understood it the first time. But because he wanted to be absolutely sure he was reading it correctly — that Damien Hargrove, his best friend of ten years, the man who had just been standing beside Ethan's ex-fiancée in Ethan's own family's sitting room, had genuinely sent him Anytime, okay? with a cheerful little exclamation mark, as though they had just wrapped up an ordinary conversation.

He locked his phone screen and took another bite of his sandwich.

Mayonnaise smeared the corner of his mouth. He wiped it on his sleeve.

The sky still didn't rain.

That night, lying in the apartment he had exactly seven more days to occupy, Ethan stared at the ceiling and ran the numbers in his head.

Personal bank account: enough to live on for three months if he was careful. Two months if he needed a deposit for a new place.

Academic standing: midway through his third year of Awakened Resource Management — a degree that was essentially worthless without a guild sponsor.

Combat experience: none.

Social connections: all tied to the Cole family, which meant all of them were no longer his.

He opened the System panel.

The familiar screen appeared — pale grey, small text, minimalist to the point of seeming deliberately unobtrusive, as though the System itself didn't want anyone staring at it for too long.

USER: ETHAN COLE

RANK: F

LEVEL: 1

STATS: STR 8 / AGI 9 / INT 11 / VIT 8

SKILLS: —

ASSESSMENT: DOES NOT MEET COMBAT ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS

NOTE: User is advised to pursue non-combat career pathways. Psychological support services may be requested through the Awakened Community Assistance Center.

He stared at the line Psychological support services may be requested for a long moment.

Then he closed the panel.

Outside his window, Neo Ashveil blazed with the light of a million other lives continuing on — guild towers illuminating the northern skyline, the massive advertising screens on Ironspire Tower running highlight reels of the newest A-Rank team that had just cleared an S-Class dungeon, and somewhere further off, music from the Awakened dining district drifted in faintly, a quiet reminder that this city did not pause for anyone.

Ethan turned off the light.

Tomorrow, he would find a job.
