Introduction

I was married to Daniel for eight years. I thought we were happy.

Then I found a receipt in his car — a private OB-GYN clinic, Upper East Side. The name on it was Lydia's. My best friend's.

I drove straight to my brother Joel's apartment. Joel, the boy I raised. The only family I had left. I needed someone to tell me I was wrong.

I heard them laughing before I knocked.

I looked through the gap in the door and saw all three of them — Daniel, Lydia, and Joel — standing in the living room with champagne glasses, toasting the baby that wasn't mine.

My husband. My best friend. My little brother.

Every person I had ever trusted. All in the same room. All in on the same secret.

And not one of them had thought to tell me.

Chapter 1

Audrey's POV

November in New York. The wind cut through Manhattan like a blade.

I sat in Daniel's black Range Rover, gripping a crumpled bill so hard my knuckles had gone white.

It was a receipt from a private OB-GYN clinic out on Long Island. Three thousand dollars. Dated last Friday — the same day Daniel told me he had a business trip to Boston.

The patient's name: Lydia.

Lydia. My best friend since freshman year of college. My daughter Lily's godmother. Three months ago she'd shown up at our door in tears, saying her ex had been hitting her and she had nowhere to go. I felt awful for her, so I offered her our guest room in our Upper East Side apartment. She'd only just moved out last week.

My hands started shaking. My stomach turned, a wave of nausea rising fast. I kept trying to tell myself there was some explanation — maybe Lydia was sick, maybe Daniel had covered the bill as a favor to a friend.

But what kind of friend sits with you through an OB-GYN ultrasound?

I called Daniel.

He picked up after several rings. Soft jazz in the background.

"Hey, Audrey. What's up? I'm in a meeting." His voice was low and steady, with just the right amount of tired.

"Where are you?"

"Still at the office, babe. It's gonna be a late one. Don't wait up — go ahead and get Lily to bed."

Not a single pause. Not one.

I hung up. Whatever was left of my doubt dissolved completely.

I didn't cry. Past the shock, there was nothing — just a cold, spreading numbness. I started the car and drove with no destination in mind, just moving through the city. Sleet had started to fall, blurring the neon reflections across my windshield into smears of color.

I needed to talk to someone. I needed family.

I drove to Brooklyn and pulled up outside my brother Joel's building.

Our parents died in a car accident when we were kids. I dropped out of school and worked three jobs to put Joel through his Ivy League program. Now he was running his own startup — with Daniel as his lead angel investor. Joel was the only family I had left in this world. Him and Lily.

I took the stairs to the third floor. I was about to knock when I noticed the door wasn't fully latched — just cracked open, a sliver of warm light spilling through.

Then I heard laughter.

Daniel's laughter.

I went still. Through the gap, I could see inside.

The fireplace was going, casting orange light across the room. Daniel was wearing his custom Armani shirt, one arm looped around Lydia's waist. Lydia had on a silky slip dress, a glass of sparkling water in her hand, leaning into his shoulder.

And my brother Joel was on the couch across from them, raising a glass of whiskey.

"To our little nephew!" he said, grinning wide. "And to Daniel's three million landing in my account next week. Cheers, man."

"Hey, keep it down, Joel." Lydia laughed and waved him off. But her eyes said something else entirely — pure satisfaction.

"Oh, please." Daniel smirked. "Audrey's just a boring housewife. All she does is obsess over Lily's asthma and complain I'm never home. You're the only one who GETS me, Lydia. Being with you — I actually feel alive."

"Hey, don't even worry about Audrey." Joel leaned back like he'd already thought all of this through. "All she cares about is keeping the family together. You threaten her with Lily's custody and she FOLDS. She's got nothing without you. Never did."

The floor dropped out from under me.

This was my brother. The man I'd sacrificed years of my life for. This was my husband, the one who'd promised to love me forever. This was my best friend, the one I'd taken in without a second thought.

They'd been in on it together the whole time. And to all three of them, I was just a fool they could squeeze whenever it was convenient.

I pushed the door open.

BANG. It hit the wall hard.

All three of them froze. The smile fell off Daniel's face. Lydia sucked in a sharp breath and ducked behind him. Joel's whiskey glass hit the carpet.

"Audrey?" Joel's voice cracked. "How — what are you doing here?"

I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes on Daniel. "A meeting, huh? Important clients?"

Daniel collected himself fast. His arm stayed around Lydia. "Look, you heard what you heard. Our marriage has been dead for years, Audrey. You're suffocating — and you don't even know it. You've been suffocating ME."

"So you went after my best friend." My voice was shaking. I took a step forward. "And you had my own brother cover for you."

"Oh, come ON, Audrey." Joel was already on his feet, already defensive. "Daniel works his ass off — when did you ever appreciate that? I mean, Lydia gives him what you never could. And honestly? For Lily, for this family — can't you just let it go? You're making this way harder than it needs to be."

I looked at him. I genuinely didn't recognize the person standing in front of me.

"I worked three jobs so you could go to college," I said. "That startup of yours runs on his money — money to keep ME quiet. And you're standing there telling me to look the other way."

"ENOUGH." Daniel's voice went flat. "Lydia is pregnant. She doesn't need the stress. You go near her — you even THINK about it — and I will make sure you never see Lily again. I PROMISE you that."

Lydia peeked out from behind his shoulder, eyes glistening. "Audrey... look, I'm so sorry. It just... happened. You're such a good person. You want us to be happy, don't you?"

I stood there and looked at all three of them.

I didn't scream. I didn't go for anyone. Whatever fire had started in my chest had burned itself out, leaving nothing but cold, quiet ash.

"Daniel," I said. Each word deliberate and even. "You will pay for everything you just said."

I turned and walked out into the blizzard.

My marriage was over. My family was gone.

All I had left was Lily.

One Night. One Mistake. One Lifetime of Consequences.

I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.

My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.

But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.

In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.

"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.

"Who the fuck is Jason?"

My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.

I ran away for my life!

But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!

They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.

Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”

There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
