Noah · Ongoing · 15.8k Words
Introduction
The world thought she ran to hide.
They were wrong.
She ran to the only place that had ever made her feel clean: a mountain town above the snowline, where a quiet rescue captain named Elias Roan had lived in her secret account, her unfinished letters, and her heart for three years.
But shame follows fast. So does the man who ruined her.
And when Clara's past climbs the mountain to destroy her one last time, Elias may be the only person willing to stand between her and the crowd.
Chapter 1
The clasp on Clara Vale's dress broke under the flash of three hundred cameras.
For half a second, no one understood what had happened. She felt the whisper of silk sliding wrong against her skin, the sudden cold at her sternum, the tiny metallic snap that should have been impossible because the gown had been fitted twice, checked twice, guarded by her own stylist until the car door opened.
Then the red carpet inhaled.
Clara caught the bodice with one hand and smiled because actresses were trained to bleed prettily. Behind the barricade, phones lifted. A photographer laughed before pretending he had coughed. Someone called her name as if she had chosen this.
"Clara, over here!"
"Clara, did you mean to do that?"
"Clara, one more!"
The old Clara would have found the joke, tilted her chin, turned disaster into a GIF she controlled. The old Clara had survived directors who called her difficult, producers who called her grateful, and interviews where men twice her age asked whether ambition made women lonely.
But tonight was supposed to be different.
Tonight she was nominated for Best Actress.
Tonight, after twelve years of smiling through hands she did not want on her waist and contracts that made her smaller than her own name, she was supposed to walk into the theater as proof that she had not been ruined by surviving.
Across the carpet, Grant Harlow watched from beside the sponsor wall.
Her ex. Her former producer. The man who had once told her she could be brilliant if she learned to be less exhausting about her boundaries.
His mouth did not move, but his eyes did.
They dropped to her hand clenched over the failing dress, then lifted with something almost like satisfaction.
Clara's stomach turned.
Bianca Wynn stepped out of a black car twenty feet behind him, perfect in silver, young enough for the press to call her fresh and old enough to know exactly what she was doing. She covered her mouth when she saw Clara.
Not in horror.
In delight.
Security finally moved. Clara's stylist, Nina, ran toward her with a wrap. Clara let the woman shield her body and walked off the carpet through a tunnel of cameras that kept firing at her back.
In the restroom, Nina was crying harder than Clara.
"I checked it," Nina whispered. "I swear to God, I checked it."
"I know." Clara stood still while Nina's shaking fingers tried to secure the broken clasp. "This wasn't you."
Nina looked up.
Clara met her eyes in the mirror. Her makeup was flawless. Her face looked like it belonged to someone who had not just been undressed in public for sport.
That was the cruelest part of beauty. It made pain look deliberate.
By the time Clara entered the theater, the clip was already trending.
By the time the Best Actress category appeared on the screen, the jokes had names.
Wardrobe malfunction.
Desperate stunt.
Aging starlet.
Grant sat three rows ahead with Bianca at his side. When Bianca's name was called instead of Clara's, he stood first. He pulled Bianca into his arms like a man welcoming history.
The cameras found Clara.
She clapped.
She smiled.
She watched Bianca take the statue that had been promised to Clara by every critic who had seen the film.
Her hands moved on command, palm against palm, a clean little sound swallowed by the roar. She wondered if anyone could tell that applause, too, could be a kind of self-defense. Keep your hands busy. Keep your face gracious. Give them no still image they can caption bitter.
Bianca cried into the microphone. "To the women who lifted me instead of tearing me down."
The audience applauded as if the line had not been sharpened for Clara's throat.
Her phone buzzed in her clutch.
Grant.
She should not have opened it.
She did.
Today was a lesson. Touch Bianca again, and next time I won't stop at fabric.
Clara read the message once.
Then again.
The theater roared around her. Bianca held up Clara's future in both hands.
Clara turned off her phone and placed it back in her clutch.
For the rest of the ceremony, she sat perfectly still.
At midnight, while the after-party filled with people waiting to watch whether she would break in public, Clara walked past the step-and-repeat, past the champagne tower, past Grant Harlow's outstretched hand.
"Clara," he said softly. "Don't be dramatic."
She paused.
The cameras were gone now. Only Grant could see her expression.
"That's the problem with you," she said. "You always thought my silence was good manners."
His smile thinned.
Clara walked out.
At 12:17 a.m., she posted one sentence from the back seat of a rideshare.
I'm done.
Then she booked the first flight north.
By dawn, the world would think she had run from shame.
By dawn, they would be wrong.
Because Clara Vale was not running from the red carpet.
She was running toward the only man whose name she had never dared say out loud.

"What?" It was out of my mouth before I could stop it. I did not wait for him to answer me, I walked toward him.
"Dance on my lap."
My head screamed at me to turn around and run. But my whole body responded to his command.
"Yes, Alpha," I pulled my dress over my body, it dropped over my head and fell to the ground behind me. I was left in nothing but my matching bra and thong. My hands covered my chest on reflex.
"Let me see."
My hands dropped to my sides.
I lowered myself into his lap, facing him. His eyes peered into mine, and I could feel his hot breath fan my face. His dick responded to all my moves, hardening against my now-moist vagina. I swallowed hard, allowing my lips to part in a ragged breath. His hands trailed up to my waist.
"No touching."

The Contract Wife: Marriage Of Malice
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.
