Introduction

I was the daughter the Sterling family never wanted.

For twenty years, I lived as a Sterling.

Twenty years believing I was the cherished daughter of one of the most powerful families in the city.

Until their real daughter came back.

Overnight, everything I thought belonged to me was taken away.

My name.

My home.

My family.

Even the man I was supposed to marry.

Worse, I was drugged, framed, and abandoned beside a complete stranger.

By the time I woke up, my engagement was over—and there was no room left for me in the Sterling mansion.

The door I had walked through every day for twenty years closed behind me.

And this time, no one came after me.

Just when I thought I was about to be left with nothing, the man I'd spent that night with — a mechanic who'd been set up just like me — looked at me and asked,

"Should we get married?"

I should have walked away.

I don't know why, but somehow, against all reason, I said yes.

And just like that, I moved into his cramped shared apartment, trading everything I had ever known for a life that couldn't have been more different from the one I'd left behind.

Would this reckless decision lead me to happiness — or push me toward another abyss?

Chapter 1

Ella's POV

The ballroom smelled like champagne and perfume, thick enough to make your head swim.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows with a glass of orange juice in my hand, my gaze drifting toward the center of the room without meaning to.

Victoria Sterling was wearing an ivory cashmere coat tonight, her hair pinned up without a single strand out of place, laughing softly with a few of the family's elder guests. Posture perfect, chin lifted just slightly, smile measured and warm — every angle of her looked rehearsed.

She really does look like a Sterling.

Three months ago, a DNA report turned my entire life upside down. Victoria was Richard Sterling and Margaret Sterling's biological daughter.

I was just the baby who got switched at birth twenty years ago — the wrong child brought home after a storm knocked out the power at a private hospital.

Twenty years of the wrong life. One piece of paper to correct it.

For the past three months, Victoria had been all soft smiles and gentle words in front of my parents, occasionally even putting in a good word for me.

But behind closed doors, my design coursework had vanished twice. Old friends had started pulling away. Things I'd never said were circulating through the upper-class social circuit as "rumors." Nothing could be traced back to her directly, but I knew. I'd always known.

Dad was consumed by guilt over what she'd been through. Every time Richard looked at her, there was something close to obsession in it — as if he could never do enough to make it right.

And Mom, Margaret, genuinely admired the way Victoria carried herself. Composed. Poised. Unshakeable under pressure.

Nothing like me. When things went wrong, I mostly just cried.

"Ella."

I snapped back. Victoria had crossed the room without me noticing, and she was standing right beside me now, wearing that same unhurried smile.

"You've been standing here alone for a while. Feeling cooped up? I was thinking of stepping out for some air — want to come?"

I thought about saying no. Ran it forward in my head — the look on Mom's face if she heard about it later, Dad's tired sigh, the inevitable conversation about how I needed to make more of an effort.

Victoria would smile through all of it and say it was fine, really, she completely understood, and somehow that would make it worse.

Not worth it.

"Sure," I said.

We slipped out through a side door and into the corridor outside. Victoria lifted two glasses of wine from a passing tray and handed one to me, casual as anything, like we'd been doing this our whole lives.

Declining in front of the passing staff felt like more trouble than it was worth. I took it.

She kept talking — nothing important, the kind of small talk that fills space — and I answered when I was supposed to. At some point my throat felt dry, so I drank.

The taste was off. Something slightly bitter underneath.

I told myself it was just the wine.

Then everything started to go wrong.

My thoughts came apart in pieces. My legs stopped cooperating. I tried to say something and couldn't find my tongue. Whatever was in that glass had already taken over.

When I came to, I didn't know where I was.

Fragments came back in pieces — wrong order, wrong edges. Dim light. Warmth, sudden and overwhelming, like being pulled under something.

Hands — large, and sure of themselves in a way that made my breath catch — moving across my skin, and everywhere they touched left something behind. Like he'd dragged a lit match along every inch he'd reached, and the burning hadn't stopped when he pulled away.

I remembered thinking that, in whatever was left of my coherent mind. Warm. Too warm.

It had been fast. And he was strong. I'd wanted to cry and couldn't find the tears. My body had answered for me, instinct filling in where my mind had gone dark, and I hadn't stopped it. Hadn't been able to.

Then nothing.

Now the light in the room was dim and yellowish. I was lying on my side in a strange bed, the sheets unfamiliar against my skin, a dark jacket draped over me.

I shifted, and pain moved through my entire body — deep, grinding, the kind that lives in the bones. I looked down at myself. My hands started shaking.

This actually happened. The thought arrived flat and clinical, like my brain was still catching up. This actually happened to you.

There was someone else in the room.

He was sitting in a chair by the window, his back to me, shoulders broad, wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt. The valet uniform jacket draped over the back of the chair told me everything I needed to know about who he was. Not a guest. Not someone who was supposed to be anywhere near me tonight.

He heard me move and turned around.

Heavy brows, deep-set eyes, a face cut from something hard. His expression was closed and weighted. He looked at me without speaking. His throat moved.

"What happened?" My voice came out rough.

"I don't fully know." He said it slowly, as the words cost him something. "I only had water tonight, and then I lost control." A pause. "I'm sorry. I know that doesn't —" He stopped. Started again. "I'm sorry."

I'd only had one drink. The one Victoria handed me herself.

I didn't know what to do with any of it. That was the truth. I didn't know where to put my hands, didn't know where to look, didn't know what the correct way to exist in this room was.

The rage came first — a hot, sudden flash — and then it collapsed into something formless and much worse.

My eyes burned. Tears fell without warning, without any feeling attached to them. I wasn't even sure I was crying. My body was just doing it on its own, like it had given up waiting for me to catch up.

She did this. The thought sat in my chest like a stone. She actually did this.

I raised my hand to wipe my face and only made it worse.

He hadn't moved from where he stood. I could feel him watching me, and I could tell he didn't know what to do either — that he was just standing there holding all of it, the weight of what had happened pressing down on him in a way he didn't know how to set down.

When he finally spoke, his voice had dropped even lower.

"I'm Cade. Cade Reno." A beat. "I'll take responsibility. Whatever you need — I'll handle it. All of it."

I didn't answer. What was I supposed to say to that? What did responsibility even mean right now? I took a slow breath and started looking for my clothes.

He turned immediately to face the window, hands at his sides, stiff, like standing still was the only thing he could offer me. I couldn't get my fingers to work right — missed the buttons twice, managed on the third try. The tears kept going. I stopped trying to stop them.

Get dressed first. Everything else can wait.

The moment I pulled up the zipper on my dress, the door crashed open.

Flash after flash, shutter sounds firing like rainfall. I threw my hands over my face and pressed into the corner of the bed, and for a single, horrible second the only thought I had was of course. Of course there's more.

He was out of the chair before I could process it. One short, low warning from somewhere deep in his chest. Then a phone hitting the floor, footsteps scrambling down the hallway, fading out.

Less than a minute. Then silence.

I lowered my hands slowly, listening first. He was standing in the middle of the room, a fresh red mark across the back of his hand, jaw tight, watching me with an expression I couldn't read — guilt, maybe, or something sitting right next to it.

"They're gone," he said.

I believed him. I just couldn't make myself move yet. I sat there with my lashes stuck together and my face still wet, turning it all over — the drink, Victoria's easy smile when she handed it to me, the way she'd looked so completely unsurprised when she said goodnight earlier.

She'd planned every second of this. And I'd walked straight into it because I didn't want to make a scene.

Twenty years, I thought. And she did this three months in.

"I just want to go home," I said. Barely above a whisper.

He looked at the floor. Then back at me. Something moved across his face — a tightening around the eyes, a jaw muscle pulling taut — and then he swallowed it back down.

"Okay," he said. "I'll take you."
