Introduction

On the exact day of our wedding anniversary, I walked into a hotel penthouse to catch my husband cheating.

Kian Rook lounged on the sofa, dragging on a cigar as he pulled his newest mistress deeper into his lap.

"You've got five years on me, Coraline. You should know by now you can't keep me on a leash. Doesn't playing my warden get exhausting?"

The young girl giggled, burying her face in his neck.

"Just accept it, Coraline. Men want youth."

I just smiled.

For five years, I had bled myself dry to crown Kian the king of the Rook Global Conglomerate.

Wall Street whispered that Coraline Voss was pathetic. A brilliant, cutthroat executive who was tragically obsessed with her cheating husband.

They were wrong. My boundless tolerance had nothing to do with Kian.

It was all because of the face he wore.

He was an exact replica of his late older brother, Silas Rook. My first love. My only love.

I spent five years enduring it all to keep a ghost alive.

But now, the illusion broke.

It was time to wake up.

Chapter 1

It was time to wake up.

...

At my smile, the room fell dead silent. Kian frowned, crushing his cigar into the ashtray.

"How much security did you bring this time? This game is boring, Coraline."

I unclasped my bag, pulling out a stack of glossy photographs and tossing them onto the table.

High-resolution shots of him and Maren scattered across the surface.

"Keep your debauchery out of the public eye," I said.

"Tonight is our wedding anniversary dinner. Be at the estate by eight."

Kian glanced at the photos, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his face.

Then, doubling down on his defiance, he grabbed Maren's chin and kissed her deeply, pulling back just enough to sneer at me.

"Message received, wife," he murmured, his voice purposefully raspy.

"But Maren and I have urgent business to conclude. See yourself out."

As his sycophants began to whistle and cheer, I turned on my heel and walked out into the corridor.

I felt no rage. Only a bone-deep, hollow fatigue.

By eight o'clock, I sat alone in the dining room.

The catered dinner was flawless, and my PR team had even expedited a custom cake to ensure perfect visuals.

Kian's infidelities were an open secret among the elite, but on our anniversary, he was mandated to play the devoted husband for the cameras.

A single Instagram post secured billions in shareholder confidence, shielding us from the predatory rumors of the market.

By ten o'clock, his chair remained empty.

My phone vibrated against the table.

It was an iMessage from Kian's number, but the syntax was unmistakably Maren's: [Kian is showing me the city skyline. He won't be coming home tonight :)]

Attached was a video. The lighting was low and the frame was blurry, but the audio was visceral.

The unmistakable sounds of tangled sheets and heavy breathing filled the quiet dining room.

"It's your anniversary," Maren's breathy voice echoed from the speaker.

"Will she be furious?"

Kian scoffed, breathless.

"She's a thirty-year-old relic. You think she can actually control me?"

He had allowed his mistresses to taunt me before, but he had never skipped the actual anniversary.

In the past, I would have dispatched my security chief to drag him home.

Tonight, I merely locked the screen, picked up my fork, and calmly finished my cold, dry-aged steak.

Halfway through my glass of Bordeaux, my phone erupted again.

The tabloid media and celebrity social media viral news cycle was exploding. Paparazzi had zoomed in on Kian, catching him passionately kissing Maren on the deck of a luxury coastal superyacht.

Usually, our PR-coordinated anniversary photos dominated the trending topics.

Tonight, the internet was feasting on his high-definition betrayal. My notifications bled with tags from millions of strangers, all waiting to see how the great Coraline Voss would react to her public execution.

My chief executive aide called instantly, panic straining his typically stoic voice.

"The tabloids broke the embargo. Should I authorize the crisis team to kill the story?"

I stared at the looping GIF of my husband kissing his mistress on my tablet.

"No," I replied. "Let it burn."

I ended the call just as a violent wave of nausea hit me.

Pushing my chair back, I sprinted to the bathroom, dropping to my knees as my stomach rebelled.

When I finally stood, gripping the edge of the vanity, the woman staring back at me in the mirror looked as pale as a corpse.

With a shaking hand, I opened my purse and pulled out the crisp, official obstetric medical report.

A mistake I refused to harbor. Methodically, I tore the paper into shreds, dropping the pieces into the wastebasket.

A single, freezing tear slid down my cheek, splashing against the back of my hand.

I curled my fingers over my stomach and let myself cry in the cavernous silence of the manor.

I never cried.

The market dictated that Coraline Voss was a bloodless titan, gripping the reins of Rook Global with an iron fist.

They didn't know I bled. They didn't know the suffocating weight of being bound by a dying man's final request, how I had traded my soul to protect Silas's legacy.

But the empire was stable now. His wishes were fulfilled, and my debt to his memory was paid in full.

There was no reason left to stay.

I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.
