Chapter 1
I was completely taken aback, unable to process what I’d just heard. “I thought we were in a relationship?” I muttered to myself in disbelief. It didn’t make sense, we’d never had any major issues, and he hadn’t ended things with me. So what was happening?
I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. I stood up and walked over to meet Kelvin halfway back to our seats. “Kelvin, what’s going on? Who was that woman your friend mentioned earlier?” I asked, my voice trembling.
He let out a heavy sigh and tilted his head. “Maureen, I’ve been wanting to talk to you about this for a while, but I just didn’t know how to bring it up.”
“Just tell me, Kelvin. I’m really confused,” I insisted, trying to keep my composure.
“Honestly, I’ve been doing some thinking about us, and I’ve concluded that it’s best if we go our separate ways,” he said.
I felt a tightness in my chest. “What do you mean by that?”
He looked at me seriously. “I don’t want to hurt you, but… my ex and I got back together a few months ago, and we’re planning to get married soon.”
My heart raced, nearly drowning everything else out. “So… what does that mean for us? Are you breaking up with me?”
He gave me a serious look. “I don’t mean to hurt you, but… my ex and I got back together a few months ago. We’re getting married soon.”
My heart pounded so hard it almost deafened me. “So… what’s going to happen to us? Are you just going to end this relationship, just like that? Like right now? Because of your ex?”
“I’m sorry, Maureen, but it is what it is,” he said, shrugging.
My shoulders dropped as tears slipped down my face. “You promised me, Kelvin. So many times. You said you’d never leave me.”
He shook his head. “We weren’t flowing as we should. The feelings…..the feelings are gone.”
I stared at him, stunned. “Are you kidding me? You’re just throwing away everything we had because your ex crawled back into your life?”
By then, everyone at the party was staring. Heat rushed to my cheeks. He could’ve broken up with me over the phone, why humiliate me here, in front of everyone?
“So, you mean to tell me now that this relationship is….over?” I asked, but he said nothing.
I moved closer, my hands trembling, when suddenly a voice from behind spat, “Back off from my man, bitch!”
I froze. Turning around, I saw the woman he’d been glued to all evening.
“Wait… is she your ex?” I asked him.
“She’s my fiancée, Maureen. You don’t get to call her my ex,” he snapped.
I gasped, the room spinning. “Oh, I see. You really love her, don’t you? But you never loved me. Where did I go wrong, Kelvin? Why humiliate me this way?”
He gave me no reply. He just walked away, hand in hand with her.
My knees gave out and I collapsed to the ground. Pain tore through my chest, tears blurring my vision. Where did I go wrong? I asked myself. I gave him everything, I tried so hard, yet it meant nothing.
Forcing myself up, I grabbed my bag from the table, feeling the pity in people’s eyes. I hated that look. I wanted to disappear. At that moment, I wished I could just end it all. I pretended not to care and tried to walk away, but my legs shook, and my steps faltered. I had no one else to call but Linda, my best friend. With trembling hands, I dialed her number.
“Hey,” I managed, voice breaking.
“Hey, bitch, what’s wrong? Why do you sound like that?” she asked.
I couldn’t even speak as tears poured down.
“Maureen? Did Kelvin do something?”
“Please… come pick me up. I want to go home,” I sobbed.
“You still at the party?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, don’t move. I’m coming.”
By the time Linda arrived, my heart was still in shreds.
“What happened?” she asked, panic all over her face.
“Kelvin… broke up with me,” I cried.
“What?! Why?!”
“He’s getting married to his ex,” I whispered bitterly.
Linda’s eyes widened. “What? That jerk! He invited you here just to dump you? Who does that?”
I shook my head, unable to stop crying. “He said he didn’t want to hurt me… yet he did. He betrayed me.”
She hugged me tight. “Babe, it’s okay. We’ll walk through this together, alright?”
“How could I be so stupid?” I muttered.
“You weren’t stupid. He’s the one who didn’t know your worth,” she reassured.
But her words bounced off me. “If I had value, he wouldn’t have left me for her.”
Linda sighed. “You know what? Enough of this crying. I was planning to go to 101ClubArena tonight, but I didn’t want to go alone. Now you’re coming with me. Wipe your tears.”
“I just want to go home,” I whispered.
“Nope. You have no choice tonight. You’re coming,” she insisted, pulling me up.
We left in her Peugeot 405. I kept crying, but she kept saying sweet things to distract me. Soon, we got to the club. Everywhere was lit, music blasting, people laughing, dancing, grinding. I stared at them and wondered, How are they so happy? Don’t they ever get sad?
We went to the bar and Linda ordered whiskey. At first, I refused, I wasn’t a drinker, but after she persuaded me, I gave in. One glass led to another until I was drunk.
The next morning, I woke up in a strange motel. My head pounded as I sat up. “What the hell? How did I get here? We were just at the club…”
Flashes of the night before returned. The drinks, the music, stumbling into a tall, broad stranger. I heard some guys call him “Liam the mommy’s boy.” I laughed weakly at the memory. But then my stomach twisted, I remembered more. The one-night stand.
I froze. “Oh my God. What have I done?” I quickly got dressed and left.
Weeks passed. I kept calling Kelvin, texting, hoping he’d answer. Nothing. I even went to his house, but his guard said I wasn’t allowed in. I gave up. Slowly, I started feeling sick. At first, I thought it was just fever. But when I went to the hospital, the doctor’s words shattered me all over again.
“Congratulations, Miss Maureen, you’re five weeks pregnant.”
I blinked at him. “Pregnant? Me?”
“Yes. Five weeks gone.”
“Doctor, no… that’s impossible. I don’t even have a boyfriend anymore.”
He looked at me, confused. “Are you sure you didn’t have unprotected sex recently?”
I shook my head. “No… my boyfriend stopped…..” Then my voice trailed off. My heart dropped. I remembered that night. .
My eyes widened. “Doctor… five weeks?”
“Yes, ma’am. Five weeks.”
