Chapter 1

My best friend spent seven years warning me that my boyfriend would betray me. On the night he proposed, I found her anonymous post: “HeTonight he proposed to my best friend tonight. Then he slept with me.” By morning, they still thought I knew nothing. By the next night, I was gone.

Chapter 1

On the night my boyfriend proposed, I found a post by my best friend confessing that she had slept with him.

Tessa Moore stopped believing in men after Miles Reed cheated on her at the end of their seven-year relationship.

The first time I introduced her to Evan Cole, she folded her arms across her chest and looked him over as if he were a product with a forged safety label.

“Men are good at performing,” she told me. “Sooner or later, he’ll betray you.”

Evan gave a quiet laugh. Then he reached across the table, took my hand, and threaded our fingers together.

“Watch me, Ms. Moore,” he said. “You can tell Lena when I fail.”

Tessa slapped her palm on the table. “Gladly. I’ll be watching.”

She kept her word.

For seven years, whenever she happened to see Evan without me—at a group dinner, a charity event, or one of the business functions where our circles overlapped—she reported back.

Evan left at nine. Alone.

Evan turned down the woman in the red dress.

Evan ordered sparkling water. He said he was driving you home later.

For most of those years, they didn’t even have each other’s personal numbers. Tessa’s reports came to me, never to him. She called it quality control. I called it love.

Every year, she failed to find a flaw.

In the seventh year, Evan proposed.

He did it on the roof of the first apartment building we had lived in after collegetogether. The building manager had let him string lights along the old brick wall. There were no photographers, no crowd, no speech about destiny. Just Evan in his dark suit, the city below us, and a ring he had designed himself.

“I’ve had seven years,” he said, looking up at me from one knee. “I still want every year after this one. Lena Hart, will you marry me?”

I laughed before I cried. Then I said yes.

Tessa hugged me so hard my ribs hurt. She made Evan drink a toast even though he resisted at first, and she cried into my shoulder while telling me she had always known he would pass her test.

That night, unable to sleep, I lay in the bed Evan and I had shared for years and scrolled through an anonymous relationship forum.

One title stopped my thumb.

I Slept with My Best Friend’s Boyfriend. What Do I Do?

The post had gone up eleven minutes earlier.

The replies were already vicious.

The poster kept answering them.

“I watched him for seven years. Every day, I watched him love her.”

“Tonight he proposed to my best friend. Then he slept with me.”

My hand went cold around the phone.

Seven years ago, Tessa’s palm had hit the restaurant table with a flat, confident smack.

I’ll be watching.

I backed out of the post and called Evan.

He answered on the fourth ring. His voice was rough. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” I had to swallow before I could make my voice steady. “What are you doing?”

There was a pause. Rain tapped somewhere near him.

Then he laughed softly. “Still at the office. I’ll come home when I’m done. Go to sleep, okay?”

“Okay.”

I hung up.

When I returned to the forum, the page refreshed.

“My best friend just called him and told him to go home.”

“He sounded so gentle with her. Why is he always cold with me?”

I pressed my teeth into my lower lip until I tasted blood.

It was Tessa.

The timing was too exact to deny. But I kept reading because some part of me still wanted an impossible mistake—a copied story, a coincidence, anything that would let the world stay where it had been an hour ago.

“He’s actually very devoted. After what my ex did to me, I thought no man could move me. He did.”

“He remembers every one of her periods.”

“Once, she came home from a business trip in a storm. He had a fever and still went to the airport to get her.”

I remembered that night.

I hadn’t called Evan because the rain had shut down half the roads. I planned to take a cab. Instead, the moment I walked out of baggage claim, I saw him standing beyond the glass doors.

He had no umbrella. His shirt clung to his shoulders, and water dripped from his hair.

He smiled before he walked toward me.

When I touched his cheek, heat shocked my palm.

“Evan, you’re burning up.”

He took my suitcase. “Missed you.”

At home, the thermometer read 102.2.

I went to wet a towel, but he caught my wrist.

“Don’t,” he murmured, eyes half closed. “You’ve got cramps. Stay out of the cold water.”

“Then I’ll get medicine.”

“Slow down.” His breath was hot against my knuckles. “I’m not dying.”

I had thought that memory belonged only to us.

The post continued.

“The next morning, he collapsed at work.”

“I was delivering documents to his floor. His assistant and I took him to the hospital.”

“He grabbed my hand while he was delirious and said, ‘Airport. I have to get Lena.’”

“I told him she was already home. He stared at me for a long time before he recognized me.”

“Then he said, ‘Don’t tell her.’”

I sat up in bed.

Evan had never told me he had been hospitalized.

That week he had called and said, “I have to travel for a few days. Try not to miss me too much.”

I hadn’t questioned it. Evan was busy. Evan was capable. Evan handled things.

Tessa had lied too.

I had asked her to dinner that same week. She had sent me a laughing voice message.

Sorry, Lena. I’m at the hospital taking care of a terrible patient who keeps trying to escape.

I had teased her. Is he cute?

There had been a small pause before she answered.

No.

I had gone to bed happy for her. I thought she might finally be ready to trust someone again.

On my screen, she wrote:

“I stayed with him for several days.”

“Around her, he’s always calm, polished, impossible to shake.”

“He isn’t like that when he’s sick. He’s mean. He hates IVs. He pulled out the line twice. The nurses couldn’t stop him.”

“When I told him to lie down, he did.”

“One nurse joked that I must be special.”

My stomach tightened.

The hospital had been the first time they spent days alone together. Before that, Tessa had watched from the edges of my life and sent her observations to me. In that room, she had seen a version of Evan I had never been allowed to meet.

The post shifted to the night of our engagement.

“My best friend kept pouring drinks for him. He’s allergic to alcohol, but he smiled and drank anyway.”

“He said he had to go back to the office. I followed because I knew he’d be sick.”

“When he saw me in his office, he told me to get out.”

“I didn’t.”

“He was pulling at his tie. His hands were shaking so badly he only made the knot tighter.”

“He would never let her see him like that.”

“I loosened it for him.”

“I asked, ‘Evan, aren’t you tired?’”

“He looked at me for a long time.”

“Then he closed his eyes.”

“I kissed him.”

“He didn’t move away.”

“The engagement band was still on his hand. My scratches were on his back.”

I made it to the bathroom before I started gagging.

Nothing came up. I knelt on the cold tile, one hand braced against the tub, while my body tried to reject a truth it had already understood.

The two people I trusted most had looked me in the face, celebrated my engagement, and carried this secret between them.

Tomorrow morning, the three of us were supposed to choose my wedding dress.
