Introduction
He did not steal money.
He stole my grandmother's name, her return papers, and the life that should have carried her out of the mountains.
Fifty years later, his granddaughter sat across from me in a law firm interview and smiled like the world already belonged to her.
I opened her file, saw the family name, and closed the folder.
"You didn't pass."
Chapter 1
The interview room at Hartwell & Lowe had glass walls, a polished walnut table, and a view of downtown San Francisco that made young candidates sit straighter.
I had watched it happen all morning.
They walked in nervous. They saw the skyline. They remembered the firm had clients on three continents, partners quoted in national papers, and summer associates who later became judges, general counsel, senators. Then they sat as if posture could become destiny.
By three o'clock, I had interviewed eleven candidates.
The twelfth did not sit straighter.
She already believed the chair had been built for her.
"Ms. Song," she said, offering her hand before I did. "Thank you for making time."
Her name was Celia Hart.
Twenty-two years old. First in her class at Stanford Law. National moot court champion. Six published student notes. Fluent Mandarin, French, and the kind of English that made privilege sound like discipline.
Her navy suit was quiet and expensive. Her hair was smooth. Her smile had been practiced until it looked natural.
Beside me, Daniel Price, one of our senior litigators, leaned forward with visible delight. He loved candidates like this: clean transcript, famous recommenders, no visible complications.
"Celia," he said warmly, "your writing sample was exceptional."
"Thank you." She lowered her eyes just enough to appear modest. "My grandfather always says legal writing should be a public service."
My hand stopped on the second page of her file.
Family background.
Grandfather: Professor Emeritus Arthur Hart, Berkeley School of Law.
Grandmother: Noelle Shen Hart, painter, National Arts Academy fellow.
The letters blurred for half a second.
Arthur Hart.
Noelle Shen.
English names they had chosen after coming to America, polished smooth for university brochures and donor dinners. But I knew the names underneath.
Cui Jianhua.
Shen Yuqing.
Except the woman the world called Noelle Shen was not Shen Yuqing.
My grandmother was.
My grandmother died in a mountain village with her fingers bent from sewing soles by oil lamp, her true name spoken only by two women who had inherited her shame.
I looked up.
Celia was still smiling.
Her jawline, the arch of her brows, the slight tilt of her chin when she expected approval--all of it came from an old photograph hidden in my mother's sewing box. A young man under a locust tree, handsome enough to be believed, cruel enough to survive belief.
"Ms. Song?" Daniel murmured.
I closed the folder.
"You didn't pass."
The room went silent.
Celia's smile held for one second too long.
"I'm sorry?"
"You did not pass this interview."
Daniel turned toward me so fast his chair squeaked. Across the table, another interviewer, Priya Nair, froze with her pen above her notes.
Celia laughed once, soft and incredulous.
"There must be a misunderstanding."
"There isn't."
Her cheeks colored. "May I ask on what basis?"
"Professional judgment."
Daniel lowered his voice. "Mira, perhaps we should discuss this after--"
"No."
Celia's spine straightened.
There it was.
Not panic. Indignation.
The first time in her life a locked door had failed to open before she touched it.
"Ms. Song," she said, no longer smiling, "my credentials exceed your posted requirements."
"They do."
"I ranked first at Stanford."
"I read that."
"I won the national moot court championship."
"I read that too."
"My notes were published in three journals."
"Six, according to your resume."
Her eyes sharpened, as if she had expected ignorance and found a wall instead.
"Then I don't understand."
"Grades are one part of a candidate."
"And the other part?"
"Character."
The word landed badly. I meant it to.
Celia's lips parted.
Daniel made a small warning sound.
I kept my eyes on her.
"Hartwell & Lowe does not owe a position to every impressive resume. Thank you for coming."
For the first time, her hand tightened on the edge of the table.
"Do you know who my family is?"
The old question. The family crest of people who had never had to ask directions because history moved out of their way.
"Yes," I said.
"My grandfather built half the legal ethics curriculum in this state. My grandmother's paintings hang in three museums. My parents served on the Ninth Circuit before the accident. I have spent my entire life preparing for this profession."
"Then you should know threats are not persuasive advocacy."
Her face went red.
"You are targeting me."
"I am rejecting you."
She stood.
"You will regret this."
I folded my hands over her file.
"Many people have told women in my family that."
She did not understand.
Of course she did not.
She gathered her bag, shot Daniel a look that said fix this, then turned back to me.
"My grandfather can end your career with one call."
"Then he should make it carefully."
The glass door closed behind her.
No one spoke.
Through the wall, I watched Celia Hart walk past the reception desk with her head high, already reaching for her phone.
Daniel exhaled.
"Mira, what the hell was that?"
I opened the next file.
"Call the next candidate."

How Not To Fall For A Dragon
Which is why it was more than a little confusing when a letter arrived with my name already printed on a schedule, a dorm waiting, and classes picked out as if someone knew me better than I knew myself. Everyone knows the Academy, it’s where witches sharpen their spells, shifters master their forms, and every kind of magical creature learns to control their gifts.
Everyone except me.
I don’t even know what I am. No shifting, no magic tricks, nothing. Just a girl surrounded by people who can fly, conjure fire, or heal with a touch. So I sit through classes pretending I belong, and I listen hard for any clue that might tell me what’s hidden in my blood.
The only person more curious than me is Blake Nyvas, tall, golden-eyed, and very much a Dragon. People whisper that he’s dangerous, warn me to keep my distance. But Blake seems determined to solve the mystery of me, and somehow I trust him more than anyone else.
Maybe it’s reckless. Maybe it’s dangerous.

The Contract Wife: Marriage Of Malice
He didn't finish. He didn't need to.
I didn't tell him to stop.
Instead, my fingers curled into his shirt, clutching the fabric as though it was my only anchor. Something in him snapped—something he had been holding back for too long. His mouth found mine in a kiss that wasn't tender, but hungry, desperate.
I gasped into him, his hand sliding up to cup my jaw, holding me as if afraid I might vanish.
"You drive me insane," he breathed against my mouth, his lips trailing to my throat. "I can't lose you, Ella. Not you."
My head fell back, a soft sound escaping me as his fingers memorized my waist. My anger melted beneath his desperation.
"James..." I whispered, more plea than protest.
His hand caught mine, fingers threading together tightly. "I'll bring him back. I swear it. Just... don't turn away from me. Please."
The word please—low, ragged, almost broken—undid me more than anything else could have.

It was meant to destroy me.

Now I'm traveling with a hunter who lost his companions to the same curse I carry, chasing fragments of a prophecy the Fae sing differently. An elf took a baby from the palace the night I was born.
