Trapped By The Cold Hearted Billionaire
Orevaoghene Felix · Ongoing · 43.9k Words
Introduction
To save her dying brother, Sloane Brown has one final asset to bargain with, herself. She walks into the lion's den and signs a contract with Elias Voss, the notoriously cruel billionaire who collects people like trophies. One year. Five million dollars. Her complete and utter submission.
He plans to own her, break her, and discard her when he's bored. But Sloane isn't just a pawn. She sees a flicker of humanity beneath his cold, calculated exterior. She thinks she can thaw the ice around his heart.
She's wrong.
Elias Voss doesn't have a heart. He doesn't fall in love. He destroys.
But what if, for the first time, he wants to be destroyed?
And what if the one woman he swore to break becomes the only one who can put him back together?
Chapter 1
The number was seared into Sloane's brain like a brand: forty-three thousand, six hundred and forty-two dollars.
That was the cost of keeping Seth alive for another month. That was what they wanted for the privilege of not letting her brother die. The bill sat on the kitchen counter like a threat, the paper so crisp and white it almost glowed under the flickering fluorescent light. She'd read it seven times now, each pass carving the numbers deeper into her skull.
Sloane picked up the envelope and held it over the trash can. One flick of her wrist and it would be gone. She could pretend she never saw it. She could let the debt collectors call and ignore them like she'd been doing for the past six months.
But Seth's face floated behind her eyelids. Pale. Drawn. That brave little smile he always wore when he said he was fine.
She put the bill in the drawer. Then she went to work.
Browns was a small coffee shop wedged between a laundromat and a bodega on a street that had seen better decades. The floorboards creaked in the same spot every time someone walked in. The espresso machine wheezed like an old man catching his breath. But it smelled like home coffee and cinnamon and the faint sweetness of the vanilla syrup her father had always used.
Her father had scraped together everything he had to buy the tiny storefront twenty years ago, convinced that good coffee and honest prices would keep people coming back. He'd been right, mostly. The regulars still came. The coffee was still good. But her father was gone now killed by a hit and run driver who'd never been found, and the shop was all Sloane had left besides Seth.
The morning shift started at six. Sloane was behind the counter by five-thirty, grinding beans and preheating the espresso machine. The motions were muscle memory, tamp the grounds, lock the portafilter, steam the milk. Her body moved on autopilot even when her mind was trapped in a loop of numbers and hospital bills and Seth's hollow cheeks.
Ryan and Abigail arrived at seven on the dot. Ryan was already cracking jokes about his disastrous date the night before, his voice carrying through the small space like a lifeline. Abigail just shook her head and tied her apron, her quiet presence a steady anchor.
"Bad night?" Ryan asked, his humor fading when he saw Sloane's face.
"Seth was coughing up blood again." She started the machine, not meeting his eyes. "I need this week to be busy."
Ryan didn't make another joke. He just nodded and started the pastry display.
The morning rush hit like a wave. Sloane moved on autopilot, her hands flying between the espresso machine and the register. She smiled at customers, made change, wiped down counters. She was good at this. She'd been doing it since she was sixteen, when her father first put her to work on weekends.
But today, every customer felt like a countdown. Each coffee sold was another dollar toward the bill. Each tip was a step closer to keeping Seth alive another week.
At ten, the bell above the door chimed.
Katie Summers walked in, her sensible heels clicking against the worn floorboards. She was a secretary at Voss Corporation, the biggest company in America, and she came to Browns almost every day. She never acted like she was better than anyone, never looked down at the chipped counter or the mismatched cups.
"The usual," Katie said, sliding onto a stool. "And a bulk order for tomorrow. Ten AM. Serena's instructions."
Sloane's jaw tightened at the name. Serena Craig. Personal assistant to Elias Voss. Katie talked about Serena the way people talked about bad weather, unpleasant, unavoidable, and best endured from a distance.
"I'll have it ready," Sloane said.
She made Katie's latte with extra care the kind of attention she gave to regulars who never complained. Katie wrapped her hands around the warm cup and took a sip.
"You look tired," Katie said quietly.
"I am tired."
Katie nodded. She didn't offer empty platitudes or useless advice. She just said "take care" and left, the bell chiming softly behind her.
Sloane stared at the door for a long moment. Then she went back to work.
The next morning dawned gray and cold.
Sloane loaded four large boxes into the dispatch van she'd had to hire after her usual delivery service canceled. Again. The driver sat in the front seat, scrolling through his phone, not offering to help. She carried the boxes herself, her arms burning, her back already protesting.
When they arrived at Voss Corporation, Sloane felt her breath catch.
The building was massive. Forty floors of glass and steel that seemed to scrape the sky. The entrance was all blue-tinted windows, so clean she could see her own reflection, a small, tired woman dwarfed by a tower of money and power.
Security guards stood at the entrance, their eyes tracking her as she struggled with the boxes. They watched. They did nothing.
Sloane carried the first two boxes through the lobby, her fingers screaming from the weight. She went back for the second two, her muscles on fire, her face flushed with exertion. By the time she got all four into the elevator, she was drenched in sweat and barely holding back tears.
Not one person had offered to help. Not one.
The elevator ride to the top floor seemed to take forever. Sloane leaned against the wall, catching her breath, trying to compose herself. She was late now. Serena would have something to say about that.
Katie met her at the elevator doors, her face tight with sympathy. Together, they unloaded the boxes onto a cart.
"You're late," a voice said behind them.
Sloane turned.
Serena Craig stood there, perfect as always. Her blond hair was swept into a sleek ponytail, her heels probably cost more than Sloane's rent, and her dress was so short it was almost indecent.
"I'm so sorry. The delivery people—"
"Whatever." Serena waved her hand like she was shooing a fly. "I don't need excuses."
Sloane's cheeks burned. She opened her mouth to apologize again—
"Ignore her," Katie whispered, touching Sloane's arm. "She's a witch."
"Yeah," Sloane managed. But her hands were shaking.
Katie walked her toward the elevators, her presence a small shield against Serena's cruelty. Sloane's head was spinning with numbers and bills and Seth's pale face and the weight of everything pressing down on her shoulders.
She wasn't paying attention.
She walked straight into a chest.
Hard. Warm. Solid.
Sloane stumbled back, dropping her bag. The words of apology were already forming on her lips—
Then she looked up.
Elias Voss stood in front of her.
She'd seen him in magazines and on news shows. The richest man in America. The head of the Voss empire. Up close, he was almost painfully handsome. Dark hair swept back from a sharp forehead. Blue eyes that looked like chips of ice. A jaw that could cut glass. His suit probably cost more than her entire shop.
She was about to apologize—
"Move." His voice was dismissive. He didn't even look at her. His eyes were fixed somewhere over her shoulder, already moving past her like she was furniture. "You're blocking the hallway."
The words hit her like a slap. Her mouth hung open, the apology dying on her tongue.
"Excuse me?" she managed.
He still didn't look at her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, scrolling through something an email, a message, she couldn't tell. She didn't exist to him. She was air. She was nothing.
"You're in my way," he said. Still not looking. Still scrolling. "I don't have time for this. Move."
Sloane felt her face burn. She'd been about to apologize. She'd been about to say she was sorry for bumping into him, sorry for existing in his space, sorry for being poor and tired and desperate.
But he wouldn't even look at her.
Something inside her cracked.
"I just carried four boxes up here by myself," she said. Her voice was shaking. "I carried them through your lobby while your security guards watched. Nobody helped me. Nobody even offered."
He finally looked up from his phone. His eyes cold, blue, completely indifferent, flicked over her for less than a second. Then they went back to his screen.
"And?" he said.
The word was so casual. So dismissive. Like she'd just told him the sky was blue and he'd said "And?"
"And I was late because the delivery service canceled. Again. Because nobody cares about me either." She was shaking now. She couldn't stop. "But you don't know that, do you? You don't know anything about me. You just look at me and decide I'm nothing."
He didn't respond at first. He was still looking at his phone and then he said “I can see it in your eyes. You think the world owes you something. You think because life has been hard, everyone should stop and applaud your mediocrity. But here's the truth, no one cares. No one will ever care. You're just another person who can't keep up."
"You know what?" Her voice cracked. "You're an asshole. You stand there in your expensive suit looking down at everyone like we're dirt. But you don't know what it's like. You don't know what it's like to watch someone you love die. You don't know what it's like to carry four boxes by yourself because nobody can be bothered to lift a finger. You don't know what it's like to be scared every single day that you're going to lose everything you have."
She was crying now. She didn't care.
"So you can take your 'move' and your 'and' and shove them up your ass. And when you're done with that, you can take your building and your money and your cold, dead eyes, and you can shove those up there too."
For the first time, he looked at her. Really looked.
His phone lowered. His eyes, those cold, blue eyes studied her face. Not with anger or amusement. With something she couldn't read.
She didn't wait to find out what it was.
She turned and walked to the elevator.
She didn't look back.
But as the doors slid closed, she saw him in the reflection. He was still standing there. Still holding his phone. Still staring at the empty space where she'd been.
He didn't move.
For a long moment, he just stood there.
Sloane slumped against the elevator wall. Her heart was pounding so hard she could hear it in her ears. Her hands were still shaking. She couldn't believe what she'd just done.
She'd just yelled at the most powerful man in America.
The way he'd looked at her at the end. Surprised. Confused. Like no one had ever talked to him like that before.
She shook her head and felt a small, wild smile tug at her lips.
"A very fine asshole," she whispered to herself. "But still an asshole."
The elevator descended. Sloane went back to her shop, back to her life, back to the bills and the hospital and the weight of everything pressing down on her shoulders.
Somewhere on the top floor, Elias Voss stood alone in his office.
No one had ever spoken to him like that. Not once in his entire life. People either groveled or flattered. They always, always wanted something from him.
But that woman that strange, fierce, exhausted woman with the brown eyes and the trembling voice, she'd looked at him like he was nothing.
Like he was just a man.
And for the first time in years, Elias felt something.
He didn't even know her name.
He wanted to know more.
The thought bothered him. Women were bodies. They were brief distractions, fleeting pleasures he used and discarded. He felt nothing when they left. He never thought about them again.
But her face kept flashing behind his eyes. The way she'd stood her ground. The fire in her voice.
He sat down at his desk and stared at the closed door.
He wanted to see her again.
He hated that he wanted to see her again.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
