Introduction
Chapter 1
When Joe Mitchell and his wife Emily piled their belongings into the back of their black SUV. They were about to embark on a monumental journey—Joe had recently landed a promising job in the city of Washington at Washington State University. Excitement danced in the air as they drove away from their small town, eager for the tranquility and new opportunities that awaited them. Emily hoped for a fresh start with her husband, their relationship was rocky, to say the least. But what was supposed to be an exciting new chapter for Joe and Emily quickly turned into a nightmare. Having driven miles into the thick woods, Joe had chosen the beaten path instead of the highway hoping to take in all the beautiful, majestic scenery for the last time. Miles and miles into the beautiful mountain pass a scene of tragedy erupted. Seeing a semi overturned and the police pointing at a detour on the right-hand side of the road. After 4 hours of looking at the map and searching for cell phone service to find their location. The couple’s excitement began to transform into anxiety as their vehicle showed signs of engine failure. The once vibrant hopes of new beginnings faded with each tick of the temperature gauge. With no cell service and the sun setting just above the trees, a sign ahead of them with the name faded said next two miles. They decided to take a chance; they would walk forward in search of help.
They were miles away from anything resembling civilization. Grumbling and anxious, Joe asks Emily, do you remember dirt roads on the map? Emily replied, “I do not believe so while anxiously looking ahead at the long, winding road, its pavement gradually turning to dirt and surrounded by towering trees that blocked any hint of the outside world. "Spoiled it, didn’t I?" Emily said with a half-hearted smile, attempting to lighten the mood amidst the urgent distress. Joe replies with a bit of a chuckle, yes, I did not see this coming, lets pick up the pace, the sun is going down fast, and the last gas station was miles away he mumbled. While looking into her beautiful eyes with sincerity and fear in his expression.
Just as dusk settled in, the uniformity of the forest began to dissolve. The dense woods opened unexpectedly into a vast field bathed in twilight, and in the distance, they spotted what appeared to be several makeshift log cabins. Surrounded by tall grass with the silhouette of a man standing in front of the first cabin holding a rifle. Joe yells anxiously, hello sir, can you help us with a firm yet fearful tone. The man in the distance relays very hastily hurry up, come on you must get inside. Emily mutters in fear joe please I do not think we should go there, squeezing his hand and sweating profusely, he has a gun let’s just turn around. Joe Hensley replies “But babe what if he has a phone, he is probably going hunting. Maybe that is his cabin” The man in the distance shouts very loudly with a stern voice you must come inside. Catching both Joe and Emily’s attention and both looking forward in the direction of the man. They walk very slowly towards the cabin. Both shaking with fear and the realization, of the fact that they may be in a dire situation.
But as they approached the eerie cabins, a chorus of gut-wrenching screams shattered the evening calmly, erupting from the depths of the woods behind them. The sound, full of terror, sent chills racing down their spines the growls, resonated across the opening of the field “What the hell was that?” Emily yelled, her voice quaking. They both turned around shaking in fear to see with their own eyes and suddenly, figures emerged from the tree line. Casting shadows of them onto the field grass from the sun. “Joe!” Emily screamed fearfully, her eyes wide with horror. Joe panics and yells, “Run babe! Run to the cabin” as he turns toward the cabin, sprinting in a full run. Emily is so panicked. She falls while turning around and hears the man in the distance screaming in fear and distress. “Get up, get up, now you must get inside.” Joe looks back and sees Emily down and comes to a stop while screaming “Emily let’s go get up, you can do it!” His heart is pounding in dread as he watches helplessly. Emily manages to get to her feet and takes off running, as fast as she can, when she and Joe meet on the field together. “Run! We must run!” he shouted, pulling her away from the nightmare, unfolding behind them. Heart pounding, they sprinted towards the nearest cabin, fear lending urgency to their every step. In a full sprint to the cabin.
As they reached the rustic structure, a rugged man with striking features caught them by surprise. Without missing a beat, he grabbed them and yanked them inside just as the screams behind them reached a fever pitch. The door slammed shut with an echoing thud, adding to the cacophony of fear-laden sounds surrounding them Breathless, Joe, and Emily stood in the dimly lit cabin as the stranger hastily barricaded the door with a heavy board. “You have to stay very quiet,” he hissed, his eyes darting around the room, listening intently for any signs of impending danger. His face, although handsome, was etched with lines of worry and exhaustion. “What is happening?” Joe managed to choke out as he looked at the man, searching for answers in the storm of confusion.
“Stay very quiet,” the stranger intoned with an intensity that commanded their attention. the scratching and pounding of claws against wood penetrated their consciousness. The weight of terror slumped over them like a thick fog, punctuated by the sound of heavy, breathing figures and whimpering surrounding them. The couple looked around hesitantly and noticed A flickering flame igniting the lantern, casting a dim light over the faces of those huddled together in shared anxiety. Hours ticked by as the night wore on, each sound amplifying their fear. “The beasts will leave if you stay quiet,” the stranger by the door reassured them, though his words offered little comfort. Hours seemed to stretch infinitely as they huddled together in the dark cabin, hearts racing with fear, trying to make sense of their new, harrowing reality. Outside, the howl of desperation morphed into low growls that echoed through the night. Finally, an eerie stillness enveloped them. The creature’s growls faded into the distance as the wind whispered through the cracks of the cabin.
“My name is Gregory,” the man introduced himself, his rugged appearance softened under the glow of the lamp. “What you have heard out there, it is not a story. You cannot go outside at night here... The beasts hunt at night.” Joe, still reeling from the horror they had just escaped, pressed for answers. "What are you talking about? What kind of beasts?" Gregory’s expression darkened. “They are large, aggressive wolf-like creatures with glowing red eyes. I have survived here for eight years, and I can tell you that it is a death sentence to wander these woods after dark.” Emily's quiet sobs broke through Joe's shock. Her voice trembled as she asked, “What do you mean… hunt at night?”
An unnerving silence filled the room, punctuated only by what felt like the faintest whispers of their fate. Before Gregory could respond, a tall man in the back interjected. “Calm down, please. If you draw attention to us, we will invite them back. There is no way out once it gets dark. Trust me, you will always end up back here.” His somber words weighed heavily in their hearts. Sara, a woman with a warm demeanor, stood and offered them comfort. “I will grab you some blankets. You can rest by the fire.” She shot a knowing glance at Joe and Emily before placing wood into the fireplace. “It’s getting chilly out, and you need to gather your strength.” Though fear still gripped their hearts, the kindness extended to the couple provided a flicker of hope against their overwhelming dread. In a world turned upside down, as night fell and creatures lurked, they realized one undeniable truth: survival would require trust in these unlikely strangers.
As they settled onto the cold cabin floor, Emily curled up in Joe’s arms, clinging to him as if he were her lifeline. Despite the warmth of the fire, a cold chill gripped their bones—a reminder of their precarious situation. The night stretched on, filled with the howling wind and the haunting silence that only heightened their fears. But eventually, exhaustion seeped into their bones, and against the overwhelming fear that suffocated them, sleep began to take its reluctant hold. The horrors of the night loomed large in their thoughts, but for now, they were alive, trapped within these four walls, waiting for dawn to unveil the secrets of the forest in which they had unwittingly become ensnared. In the wilderness, far away from the safety of the city and tranquility, Joe and Emily clung to the hope that morning would bring a chance not just for survival, but for escape from the nightmare that had swallowed them whole.

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
