My Alpha Neighbor Thinks I Am a Spy
Christina · Ongoing · 53.0k Words
Introduction
My readers noticed. My royalties tanked. My rent is three weeks overdue. According to my best friend Roni, there's only one cure—find a willing, gorgeous guinea pig and have a one night stand.
Enter Declan. My brand-new neighbor across the hall. Six-foot-three of scarred knuckles, dead eyes, and a body built from something other than a gym membership. He's exactly the kind of inspiration I need.
He's also, apparently, convinced I'm an assassin sent by vampires.
I'm not kidding. One misunderstanding involving a see-through shirt, an earbud, and a very unfortunate hand placement, and suddenly I'm pinned to his floor while he interrogates me about "the cold ones." I tell him he needs therapy. He tells me to get out. I cry into a stuffed penguin named Mr. Bond and go back to my sad, virgin life.
Except he keeps showing up. Cooking me dinner after he scares the hell out of me. Calling me a liar one night and grabbing my hand like I'm something worth saving the next. Strapping a wire to my chest and sending me into a vampire's hotel room like I'm expendable—then crashing through a window mid-transformation to catch me out of the sky.
Because here's the part I didn't see coming: Declan isn't broken. He's a werewolf. A rogue, cut off from his pack, hunted by a vampire dynasty that wants him dead for a war I know nothing about.
I started falling for the monster who keeps telling me I mean nothing to him—right before he nearly dies proving otherwise.
He says I have nothing to do with this.
But his claws did nothing but to protect me.
Chapter 1
Piper's POV
The mailbox key stuck the way it always did, and I had to jiggle it twice before the little metal door swung open and dumped a coupon for a pizza place I was never going to order from into my hand.
And an envelope.
Red letters. NOTICE.
I knew what it was before I opened it. I opened it anyway, because apparently I enjoyed hurting my own feelings.
Rent past due by one full week. Failure to remit will result in termination of your lease per the terms of your agreement.
I folded it in half, then in half again, and shoved it down into the front pocket of my apron, which already smelled like bacon grease and the lemon cleaner we used on the tables.
"Good," I said out loud, alone in the lobby. "Great. Perfect. Eight hours on my feet, one hundred and forty-seven cups of coffee, and I come home to an eviction notice. Best day of my life."
The elevator had been broken since before I moved in, so I took the stairs.
How did I get here. Genuinely. How?
"Writing's a hobby, sweetheart. Not a career." My father had said it with his fork still in his hand, mid-meal, like he was commenting on the weather. My mother had gone more practical. "And what about health insurance?"
I'd graduated four months before that dinner. I had a degree, a duffel bag, and one payment from a literary magazine for a short story about a woman who drowned her husband in a lake. Eight hundred dollars. I'd taken it and gotten on a bus and come here, to Oakhaven, where nobody knew my parents or what I'd said to my father on my way out the door.
For a while it worked. It actually worked. The rent got paid. My fridge had real food in it. I bought a lamp.
Then the writing dried up and the bills got braver, and now I was the kind of person who worked a day shift and a night shift and still had to decide which one of them I was going to lie about on applications.
I pulled my phone out on the landing and leaned against the wall while it loaded the KDP dashboard.
KDP, Kindle Direct Publishing, is the reason I can call myself a writer at all. I upload the file myself, Amazon puts it on the store, and readers who pay for Kindle Unlimited get to flip through it, and I get paid by the page. Which means my income is a number on a graph.
But the graph had been a slide for six weeks, and the last seven days were the steepest part of it. My newest book was dying in a very specific place, and I knew exactly where: chapter eleven, page reads dropping off a cliff like they'd hit a wall and given up. Sixty-two people had made it to chapter ten. Nineteen had made it to twelve.
I scrolled down to the reviews. There were good ones. There was "I read this in one sitting, please write faster," which made me feel like a real author for about four seconds. There was "the tension between them is unreal."
And then there was this:
"The sex scenes read like a nun's diary. He puts his hand on her waist and my brain starts playing Christmas carols. Please, for the love of god, go experience the real world."
I read it three times. Then I backed out of the app and stared at the wall, which was painted the color of oatmeal.
They were right. I never did it before.
I was twenty-four years old and I had never had sex. I'd written four books about it. Four. I'd researched it. I knew the vocabulary. I could describe the mechanics of it in three different positions across two separate subgenres and I had still never been touched anywhere below the waist by another man with intent.
And now the thing I couldn't do was the thing paying my rent, except it wasn't paying my rent, which was the whole problem.
My phone buzzed in my hand.
Roni: new club on Main opens tonight. come out. i'm told the talent is outstanding
Roni: like. outstanding.
I sent her back a sad face. Then I screenshotted the review and sent that too.
Three dots. Then a string of laughing-crying emojis so long it scrolled.
Roni: they're not wrong though
Roni: i love you but they're not
Me: thank you for your support. truly the most solid foundation a person could ask for
Roni: i'm serious. piper, i've known you since we were fourteen. every relationship you've had since then stopped at kissing. every single one. you cannot write a sex scene because you have never had sex
Me: i know
Roni: so come out tonight and fix it
I leaned my shoulder into the wall and typed slowly, because I'd never actually put this into words for her before, not the whole of it.
Me: i just think love and sex should mean something. that's all. i don't want to just get it over with some random guy
Roni: prude
Me: i know
Me: but what am i supposed to do about it now. it's too late for me.
I was still looking at my phone when the sound came from the end of the hall. Cardboard dragging across the floorboards. Then a low exhale, the kind someone lets out when they've been holding their breath to lift something heavy.
I looked up.
2A was wide open. The unit across from mine, the one that had been empty since March, now had a man in it.
He was bending over a box with his back to me, both hands under the flaps, and his white t-shirt was soaked through with sweat and stuck to his spine. I could see the shape of him through it, the shoulder blades moving under the fabric as he pulled, and there was a line of muscle running down each arm that wasn't gym muscle. That was the kind of build you got from doing things with your hands.
He straightened up and dragged the back of his wrist across his forehead, and then his head turned and I got the side of his face. Straight nose. Sharp jaw. Dark hair pushed back off his forehead by sweat.
I stopped breathing. Then I started again, too fast.
Oh my god, how can someone be that hot? That's not fair.
Except it was extremely fair, actually, and my body was reacting to it like a dog hearing a can opener. My underwear had gone from normal to a problem in about four seconds flat.
And he was my new neighbor. He was my new neighbor.
I lifted my phone and took a picture of him before I could think about whether that made me a criminal. Just his side, the wet shirt, the arm, the narrow line of his waist where the shirt came untucked.
Me: this is the guy who just moved in across the hall from me
The three dots appeared, disappeared, appeared. Two screaming emoji. Then three. Then a shirtless-fire one that felt like overkill but I understood it.
Roni: where did you find him. do you have any idea how lucky this is
Me: i'm thinking he could be a model for the guy in my next book
Roni: forget the club. i have a better idea
Roni: him.
Me: what do you mean him
Roni: i mean him. sleep with him. do it once, get the experience, write the chapter, watch your numbers come back up
I read that twice and my face got hotter, which I hadn't thought was possible.
Me: that's insane
Roni: it's efficient
Me: it's not just about me wanting to. it takes two people
Roni: it's just one night. i'm not telling you to marry him. you need real experience and you are standing in a hallway looking at that man's back and i can tell through the phone that you're already into it. stop pretending to be a prude and think about your bank account. think about that review.
I looked at the review in my head. Go experience the real world.
Then I looked at the envelope in my apron pocket, folded into quarters, with the red letters showing through the white.
My cheeks were still burning. My stomach was still doing whatever it was doing. I swallowed, and I could hear it, that's how quiet the hallway was.
She wasn't wrong. Bills did not pay themselves. I needed to be practical about this.
I typed: okay. but i have a problem.
Roni: of course you do
Me: i don't know how to hit on a guy who's that hot.

My Billionaire Husband's Secret
He was the CEO of the Blackwood Group — a man whose wealth and power eclipsed ninety-nine percent of the world.
He was gentle. Romantic. Attentive. I fell for him fast.
But a year into our marriage, I began to notice something — a pattern.
Lucas's sexual appetite was intense — he wanted me almost every night. Yet every single month, he arranged a solo trip to send me away. I told myself it was his way of spoiling me.
Then a message arrived from someone called Sweet An.
Do you really know your husband?
From that day on, my life filled with shadows.
I suspected my husband of having an affair.
When Lucas and I made love, something felt wrong — his body too large, too much, like something I couldn't explain.
I heard sounds during sex — animal sounds, like something feral had crawled into bed with us.
My best friend Mia said: "There are men sick enough to let dogs fuck their wives."
The family doctor, Daisy, told me: "You could never stay by Lucas's side forever. Your background doesn't make you worthy of being his wife. Do you understand?"
I went looking for whoever had been tearing my marriage apart. I fought to win my husband back.
But the deeper I searched, the larger the secret grew — something far darker hiding beneath this supposed betrayal.
Does Lucas truly love me?
And why, out of everyone in the world, did he choose to marry me?
Taste of Fate: The Vampire King's Human Mate
He reached for the back of my head and pulled me up just enough to reach my neck. When his fangs slid into me, the pain was instant, electric. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. My hands found his shoulders, clawing for something to hold. My legs kicked. Tears streamed down my cheeks.
He moaned against my throat as he drank, and the sound was devastating.
CHASING GHOSTS
The rejected white luna
Exchanging Vows: The Swapped Wife Is a Top Shaman
GO ON YOUR KNEES, ALPHA.
He was wrong.
Six years ago, Pete Leadsilver had everything an Alpha could want. Power, a respected pack and a future already written for him.
Then he met me.
What began as a game became a mistake I would spend years trying to survive. When I told him I was carrying his child, Pete chose not to believe me. He rejected me, humiliated me, and allowed the people around him to make sure I understood that there was no place for me in his world.
So I disappeared.
I took the secret of my pregnancy with me and built a life far away from the Alpha who had broken me.
Six years later, Pete finds me again. Only this time, he isn't the man with all the power. His pack is dying, his people are running out of time, and I may be the only person capable of saving them.
But I'm no longer the woman Pete remembers. And beside me is a little boy who carries far too much of Pete's face to be a coincidence.
Our reunion should have been about a cure, but instead, it becomes the beginning of a war neither of us saw coming.
Because Pete's greatest danger isn't outside his pack.
It's inside his own family.
Old resentment turns into manipulation. Loyalty becomes betrayal. And the people Pete trusts begin hiding secrets that threaten to destroy everything he's built.
Then someone comes for the people I love.
Suddenly, this is no longer about whether Pete can earn my forgiveness.
It's about whether he can keep me alive.
Whether he can protect the son he never knew existed.
Whether he can uncover the truth before the people closest to him destroy everything he has finally learned to value.
Along the way, we'll lose people we thought would always stand beside us, I'll be forced to confront wounds I've spent six years trying to bury, and the family we're slowly building will be tested in ways neither of us could have imagined.
Because sometimes love isn't the hardest thing to find. Sometimes it's the hardest thing to survive.
Pete once believed power meant never needing anyone and I once believed surviving him meant leaving him behind.
We were both wrong.
Because some bonds refuse to die, some betrayals cut deeper than rejection and some people don't come back into your life to give you a second chance.
They come back to show you exactly what you almost lost.
Pete Leadsilver lost me once.
This time, he'll have to fight to keep the family he never knew he needed.
Fated to the Enemy: The Alpha's Witch Bride
My touch tames his inner beast.
… Until I find another woman’s bite mark on his neck.
As a holy witch, I shouldn't be sneaking out for Zuri—a cursed shape-shifter from a rival clan.
But our forbidden heat is intoxicating.
When his monstrous Primal breaks free, slaughtering everything in its path, even his fiercest warriors cower.
I don't.
I walk straight to the blood-soaked beast, press my body against his, and tame him with a single, desperate embrace.
There’s just one problem: his clan betrothed him to a Shaman’s daughter.
I tell myself it's purely political. I tell myself his heart is mine.
Until tonight.
He sneaks into the woods for me. We share a deep, hungry kiss under the moonlight.
But as I pull back, my blood runs cold.
Right there, on the neck of the man I just risked my soul to save...
Is a fresh, undeniable bite mark.

The CEO Above My Desk
“I know she does.”
“And what if she doesn’t want this kind of protection?”
“She will,” I say, my voice lowering slightly. “Because she needs a man who can give her the world.”
“And if the world burns?”
My hand tightens subtly at Violet’s waist.
“Then I’ll build her a new one,” I reply. “Even if I have to burn the old one down myself.”
I don’t work for Rowan Ashcroft.
I work beneath him.
From my desk, I decide who gets access to the most ruthless CEO in the city, and who never makes it past the lobby. I manage his time, his silence, his enemies. I keep his world running while my own quietly collapses under unpaid bills, a mother locked in rehab, and a brother who vanished without a goodbye.
Rowan Ashcroft is power wrapped in a tailored suit.
Cold. Untouchable. Merciless.
He doesn’t flirt. He doesn’t smile. He doesn’t see people, only usefulness.
And for a long time, I was just useful.
Until he started watching.
A shift in his attention is subtle at first. A pause too long. A look that lingers. Orders that pull me closer instead of pushing me away. The man who stands above my desk begins to control more than my schedule, and I realize too late that being noticed by Rowan Ashcroft is far more dangerous than being ignored.
Because men like him don’t crave affection.
They crave possession.
This was supposed to be a job.
Not a test of my limits.
Not a slow, deliberate descent into his authority.
But if Rowan Ashcroft decides I belong under his desk, then so be it.
Survival has a price, and the bills don’t care how I pay them.
