Introduction
Chapter 1
I came home ahead of time.
The door lock was broken. When I pushed the door open, the motion-sensor lights in the hallway stayed off. Only neon glow seeped through the slats of the blinds, painting the entire room a deep crimson. The air reeked of damp mildew, mixed with the bitter tang of crushed medicine pills. I had grown so used to this scent over twenty-three years that I barely noticed it anymore, yet for some reason, it burned sharp in my nostrils that night.
Coins were scattered across the floor, rolling all the way from the doorway to the corner of the room. The sight of them made my skin prickle with unease. She never left money lying around carelessly. Her wallet was always neatly organized with bills sorted from smallest to largest denomination, every edge lined up perfectly. I bent down to pick up the coins one by one. As my fingers touched the cold metal, I saw her.
My adoptive mother Emily was huddled in the corner. Her hair fell loose around her face, the left side of her face badly swollen with a dark purple bruise over her cheekbone. The moment she spotted me, she instinctively turned her head away, hiding her face behind her hair. I knew this gesture all too well. This was how she looked every time she got scolded by her supervisor or harassed by customers at the Blake Building, coming home worn and defeated.
A lump formed in my throat.
"Mom."
"I'm fine. I just slipped and fell." She waved a hand, her voice trembling with an unsteady lilt at the end. Only liars spoke like that. I had delivered mail at the Blake Building for three years, and seen dockworkers carried away in an ambulance with three broken ribs still telling the paramedics they had simply fallen. I had fought in underground boxing rings for two years, watching fighters who'd lost two fingers claim they'd merely had an accident. After seeing so much, I needed no evidence to tell when someone was lying. All I had to do was look into their eyes. Hers gave her away completely. She dared not meet my gaze.
I did not press her for answers. I gathered all the coins and slipped them back into the pocket of her apron. It was the standard uniform issued by the Blake Building, a deep blue garment printed with the building's emblem — a sharp-edged tower. She had worn it for at least five years, the cuffs frayed from constant washing. For half her life, she had mopped the floors of that building, yet none of the people working there even knew her name.
She kept repeating that she was all right, and I stayed silent.
Once she fell asleep, I searched through every drawer she owned.
At the very bottom lay a manila envelope, its edges worn thin and the adhesive on the seal long dried out. Inside were two items. The first was an adoption certificate. The paper had yellowed with age, its creases so deep they looked ready to tear. Both my name and hers were printed on it, dated three weeks after my birth. The second item was a contract, its cover stamped with gilded lettering: Lifelong Custody Agreement. Most of the gold foil had flaked off, revealing the dull cardboard underneath, which was lined with fuzz from being folded and unfolded countless times.
A handwritten note was tucked inside the contract. The handwriting was heavy and deliberate, each letter formed slowly like a child practicing calligraphy: To my dearest son Aaron.
I struggled to understand the legal jargon, but the numbers spoke for themselves.
Forty-four thousand dollars each year, for twenty-three consecutive years. Interest compounded annually, while the principal remained untouched. When I saw the final balance listed on the last page, my fingers went numb. I did a quick calculation. After paying rent, utility bills and daily living expenses, there was no way her monthly salary could cover such a huge sum. I could not work out the exact shortfall, but I knew it was enormous.
Just then, the phone lit up.
It was a payment reminder from the hospital. The harsh white screen lit up the dim room: Ms. Wilson, your payment for this month's hemodialysis treatment is overdue. To continue treatment, please settle the balance within three days. Services will be suspended if payment is not received on time.
She needed dialysis. She had never breathed a word of it. Every month, she insisted she had enough money, slipping crumpled banknotes into my pocket and telling me to buy more food. I turned off the screen, and darkness flooded the room once more.
I put the contract back into the envelope. Then I heard her voice coming from the next bedroom.
She was on the phone, speaking in a hushed tone as if afraid to wake me, yet every single word cut sharply through the quiet. "Just give me one more month. Please. I'm almost able to gather this year's payment... Don't hurt him. He knows nothing. He's still just a kid."
I stood frozen in the dark, my palms soaked with sweat.
She hung up the phone. Silence lingered for a long time, followed by a stifled cough and an even quieter whimper — the sound of a creature struggling while its mouth was covered. The noise sent a chill down my spine. I recognized that sound. It was exactly how defeated boxers cried alone in the locker rooms after losing a fight.
I did not open her door.
I returned to my own bed and stayed awake the entire night.

Vengeance of the Forsaken Luna
"Bella." Ethan's tone shifted, taking on that warning edge I knew too well. "Faye is vulnerable right now. She's terrified you'll resent her, that this will divide the pack. The last thing she wants is for this baby to come between us."
"Then you shouldn't have done it." I met his eyes squarely, letting him see the ice in mine. "Go back to your son."
"For fuck's sake." He dragged a hand through his hair. "How many times—it was artificial insemination. They used my sperm, yes, but Faye and I never—"
Bella let out a cold snort. Such brazen lies. Her mate had an affair with his brother's partner, and his entire family helped force her out with nothing, all to make way for the mistress to take her rightful position. Poor fool—he thought she was just an unwanted adopted daughter, easy to dismiss and control. He never knew the computer genius he'd been searching for was his own Luna.
Since he'd tainted himself, Bella was done. She rejected him and reclaimed what was hers, rising to the top with help from Victor, who'd been secretly in love with her for years.
When Ethan tried winning her back: "You don't want our child growing up fatherless."
Bella smiled mockingly. "The child's father isn't you."

The chef’s face morphed into existential crisis.
I grabbed her arm. “Put the spatula down.”
“But—”
“Down.”
With exaggerated offense, she dropped the spatula and muttered, “Fine. But if no one here has artistic vision, that’s not my fault.”
She went undercover to expose a mafia empire.
He offered her thirty nights to save her life.
