Introduction

“I don’t remember you.”

“I’m Damian Cole. Your husband.”

“Did you marry me because you loved me?”

His cold gray eyes darkened. “No. I married you to destroy your father.”

After a car accident, Elena Voss wakes up with no memory of the past two years—including her marriage to billionaire Damian Cole. Their marriage was never about love. Damian married her for revenge, and the old Elena knew every cruel secret between them. But without those memories, Elena only feels the dangerous attraction pulling her toward the husband she should hate.

Someone is determined to keep her from remembering. The night of the accident, Elena was planning to leave Damian for good—carrying a secret powerful enough to get her killed.

Now Damian has thirty days to decide: tell his amnesiac wife the truth and lose her forever, or let her fall in love with a lie while a killer waits for her memory to come back.

A slow-burn romance of betrayal, blackmail, and dangerous second chances — where the biggest secret in the marriage isn't why they wed. It's what she found out right before she disappeared.

Chapter 1

The first thing Elena felt was the cold.

Not the cold of a room, or a draft slipping under a door — the cold of not knowing her own hands. She lifted them in front of her face and stared, waiting for recognition that never came. Thin fingers. A hospital bracelet cutting into her wrist. A wedding ring, heavy and unfamiliar, catching the fluorescent light like it belonged to someone else.

"Mrs. Cole?"

The voice came from the doorway. A nurse, clipboard pressed to her chest, watching Elena with the caution people reserve for things they don't want to break.

"That's not my name," Elena said, and her own voice startled her — rough, foreign, like she was hearing it through water.

"It is, actually. You've been Mrs. Elena Cole for two years." The nurse stepped closer, checking the monitor. "Do you know what year it is?"

Elena opened her mouth. Closed it. The number wasn't there. Nothing was there — just a smooth, aching blankness where a life should have been.

"I don't know."

"That's all right. You were in a car accident three days ago. It's called retrograde amnesia. It may come back on its own — or it may take time."

"How much am I missing?"

The nurse hesitated, and that hesitation told Elena more than words could have. "Your husband can explain better than I can. He's been here every night."

Husband.

The word sat wrong in Elena's mouth even unspoken, like a coat that didn't fit her shoulders. She looked down at the ring — thick platinum, no diamond, austere and cold, nothing like the delicate gold things she imagined when she tried to picture herself as a bride.

Her eyes drifted to the tray table. A phone sat there, cracked screen dark, sealed inside an evidence bag: DO NOT REMOVE. Her stomach dropped.

"Why does my phone have a police tag on it?"

The nurse's hand paused on the chart. "That's something you should ask your husband. Or the detective."

"Detective?" Elena's pulse quickened.

Before the nurse could answer, a brisk knock hit the door — nothing like the soft raps of hospital staff. A woman in a gray blazer stepped halfway in, a badge catching the light.

"Mrs. Cole. Detective Reyes. Just a few questions, whenever you're ready."

"I don't remember anything," Elena said. "I don't even know what happened to me."

"That makes two of us." Reyes's eyes were kind but sharp, cataloguing Elena's face like a chess player studying the board. "Your car went off Miller's Pass Road just after eleven at night. No skid marks. No mechanical failure. No other vehicles involved." She paused. "That road doesn't lead anywhere except away from the city. Any idea where you were headed?"

"No."

"Do you know if anyone might have wanted to hurt you?"

The nurse shifted. "Detective, she just woke up—"

"It's fine." Reyes set a card on the tray table, beside the bagged phone, and let her gaze linger there a beat too long. "If anything comes back to you — anything at all — call me before you mention it to anyone else. Anyone."

The door swung shut behind her, and the silence that followed felt heavier than before.

Anyone. Not "your family." Not "your friends." As if the danger might already be standing closer than a stranger ever could.

The door opened again, and this time the air in the room changed.

She felt him before she saw him — a kind of pressure, like weather rolling in. Tall, dressed in a charcoal suit that looked poured onto him, dark hair combed back from a face carved out of hard, beautiful angles. But it was his eyes that stopped her — pale, glacial gray, fixed on her with an intensity that didn't match anything she'd have called husbandly.

There was no relief in his face. Only something coiled and unreadable, watching her the way a man watches a storm he isn't sure has passed.

"Leave us," he said to the nurse, without looking away from Elena.

The door clicked shut. Elena was alone with a stranger who apparently owned half her life.

"You're—"

"Damian Cole. Your husband."

"They told me. I don't remember you."

Something passed over his face — too fast to name. He walked to the window instead of the bed, put his back to the gray light. "How much do you remember?"

"Nothing. My name. This morning. Anything." Her voice cracked. "It feels like someone else's file."

"You don't want to know who we are," he said. "Not yet. Not like this."

"Excuse me?" Elena pushed herself straighter, ignoring the ache in her skull. "You're going to stand there and tell me I'm not allowed to know my own life?"

"I'm telling you to rest."

"That's not an answer. That's a wall."

Something like surprise crossed his face — brief, smothered. As if the old Elena wouldn't have pushed.

"Fine." His jaw tightened. "You're Elena Voss. You were, before you married me. Your father is Richard Voss. Mean anything?"

"No."

"It will." Something dark moved behind his eyes. "We've been married two years. It was not a conventional arrangement."

"What does that mean?"

"It means we didn't marry for love, Elena." He let that sit. "Because your father destroyed my family. Marrying you was how I made him pay for it."

The words hit the room like a dropped glass. "So I was a transaction."

"You were a means to an end." He said it without cruelty, which somehow made it worse.

"Did I know?" she whispered. "Before the accident — did I know why you married me?"

"Yes. You were working on forgiving me. We'd made — progress."

His eyes dropped, just briefly, to her mouth, then back up, and something electric snapped through the space between them.

"There's something you're not telling me," she said quietly. "Something bigger than a marriage of convenience."

His hands, shoved in his pockets, curled into fists. "Get some rest, Elena." He turned for the door.

"Damian." He stopped, back rigid. "Why do you look at me like you're angry I survived?"

For a long moment he didn't move. When he finally turned his head enough for her to catch his profile, the look on his face wasn't anger.

It was fear.

"Because," he said, so quietly she almost missed it, "the woman who got into that car three nights ago wasn't planning to come home to me."

He was gone before she could ask what that meant, footsteps fading down the hall — and Elena sat alone with a ring she didn't remember choosing, a detective's card she wasn't supposed to mention, and a husband who had just told her their entire marriage was built on revenge.

She looked down at her hands — unfamiliar, someone else's — and for the first time since waking, a feeling stirred at the edge of her mind. Not a picture. Not a name.

Just fear, closing around her throat like a hand.

She had been running from so

mething the night of the crash.

And somewhere in this hospital, in a file she wasn't allowed to see, was the answer to who.

Dear readers, this novel is coming to an end soon. I highly recommend another fantastic story of the same genre:

I’d appreciate all your support, thank you so much!
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.

On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...

Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.

George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.

His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
