The Dodder and the Noose | A Purifier Grows in the Ashen District
Hushie · Ongoing · 40.8k Words
Introduction
Jo is the most valuable — and most defenseless — kind of person in the wasteland. A Tier-4 Water Purifier: someone who can turn irradiated sludge into something people can actually drink. Under the Legal Attachment Act, anyone without combat ability must be registered under a stronger person's name to survive. Her name is listed under her comatose boyfriend's file.
The moment he goes down, she has seventy-two hours before the Act catches up with her.
She goes to the Finding Wall.
The bounty-poster is a Tier-5 awakener from the Iron Fang Knights, callsign "Stillwind" — and he's been searching for a girl he only ever knew by her voice. An online relationship that ended when the world did.
She is that girl.
But she can't say so. The moment she does, someone will make sure she's buried as an impostor instead.
This is how she walks into the most dangerous crew in Ironhaven.
This is also how she discovers that the scariest cage she's ever been in doesn't have bars.
It has heating. Running water. Fresh vegetables every morning.
It's called "protection."
Chapter 1
Josephine's POV
The end-of-shift bell at the water plant finally rang, and I got to walk out of that underground space that smelled of rust and sour sweat.
I dragged my legs up the street with the ration bag I'd just collected, one step at a time, toward the room I rented.
The light at the stairwell flickered, and a stomach-turning smell of synthetic alcohol hit my nose. Old Hall's ugly face darted out of the shadow and planted itself across the middle of the corridor.
"Your man's half dead. What are you still babysitting him for? Sign a vassal contract with Old Hall here and I'll keep you in meat cans every meal — real meat, not that gray mush."
He rocked on his feet, ran his eyes up and down me with a narrow little grin, and steadied himself against the wall.
I'd worked a full day and my body had nothing left. I didn't have the energy to deal with garbage like him, so I pulled up my dust scarf and walked straight ahead.
I tried to slip past him. All I wanted was to get home.
"What, you don't like the offer? Old Hall's got plenty of credits. Just name your number."
He blocked me with his shoulder, grinning like a creep.
He licked his lips and kept going. "Or is it that you don't want a contract at all and you'd rather do straight business? Why don't you just quote me a price? What's a night cost? We're neighbors — I have to open your account for you. Give me a discount."
I held the nausea down so I wouldn't throw up right there.
Ever since my boyfriend went under, I'd run into men like this every single day.
A woman with no way to defend herself and no protector left is a toy anyone in this wasteland can put their hands on.
But what was I supposed to do? As a four-tier purifier, if I got into a fight, the only thing I could do was rinse the mud off a man's shoes.
Since I couldn't win, getting out of the way was the best option I had.
I backed up fast and tried to go around him again, reminding myself quietly as I moved.
Win, and there's no reward. Lose, and Mira and Milo don't eat dinner tonight, and they spend the whole evening wondering when I'll be back.
"What the hell are you pretending for?" His hand came out and clamped my chin.
"Nose in the air every day, like you're not the same breed as the rest of this floor. Who are you staying so clean for? Answer me!"
He tilted my face up, and the loose strand of hair slipped out from under the scarf. The corridor light happened to fall right on me, and his expression changed all at once.
His fingers stopped. His breathing got rough and the whites of his eyes slowly flooded red — that's how men in this city look when greed gets the better of them.
I was used to it. This face of mine always brings out that look.
Someone once told me it was a gift from God, like Aphrodite in the moonlight, a masterpiece of the divine.
But in this wasteland, a fine face is never a good thing.
I kept my face buried in the dust scarf for exactly this reason — so today wouldn't happen.
"Get your hands off her!"
A shout cracked down the corridor from behind me.
He didn't let go. He frowned and turned his head to look.
"I said take your goddamn filthy hands off her face!" Marcus Glenn's thick arm came out from behind, seized the man's wrist, pulled once and flung — the man slammed into the sheet metal with a boom like a thunderclap.
Old Hall picked himself up, saw who it was, and scrambled down the corridor on all fours in a panic.
At the same moment, a door behind me that had been open a crack shut quickly.
Marcus turned around and switched his expression on the spot. The ferocity drained off him completely, replaced by a face full of concern.
"Josie. Did he hurt you? Did he touch you anywhere else?"
"Thanks." I kept my eyes down and didn't want to meet his. "Captain Glenn. I'm fine."
There it was again.
Third time this week.
Every time I ran into "danger," Captain Glenn was always the first one on the scene, running his little hero-saves-the-girl routine.
"Who was he? Want me to go have a talk with him?" His tone was eager.
"The one from the third floor. Forget it." I fixed the scarf back in place. "No point wasting time on trash."
"Josie." He stepped closer and lowered his voice. "Last time you said you'd think about it. How much longer does that take?"
"Things are busy at the plant." I pushed the hair back from my ear. "The schedule's packed and Eli's medical pod needs money every single day. I don't have time to think about anything else right now. Give me a few more days."
It was obvious Marcus had run out of patience.
"What do you actually want? How about signing a contract with me?" One hand clamped around my wrist, a little too tight. "I'm better than trash like that, aren't I?"
In this wasteland, a low-tier logistics Evolver has no legal right to stand alone. Each one is required to sign a vassal compact with a higher-tier Evolver, becoming a ward under a guardian.
The guardian controls resource allocation and answers for the ward's safety. It is sold as protection for the weak, but it is really just the powerful keeping the leash in their own hands.
"Captain Glenn, don't." I smiled — strained, but absolutely polite.
"You've done so much for us lately. Why don't you come up for dinner tonight? I'll cook."
Murmuring picked up around us. More and more people were drifting over to watch.
If I made a scene with him here, the trouble afterward would only multiply.
"Sure." His whole body loosened up. "Your cooking is the best I've ever had."
He smiled the whole way, talking about the small stuff from work.
I hummed now and then, kept my face buried in the scarf, and moved fast down the corridor.
"Aunt Josie! You're finally back!"
The door flew open on a bright shout.
Behind it were two seven-year-olds, two cute little faces that looked almost exactly alike.
They're my sister's kids — Mira and Milo. My sister died a few years back in a radiation dust storm.
"You came back late today, Aunt Josie." Mira crashed into my arms and asked sweetly. Milo followed behind her, holding the door frame and watching his sister act cute.
Then both children saw the man standing behind me and immediately switched on their good-manners faces. "Hello, Uncle Marcus."
Mira tipped her head back and blinked up at him sweetly. "Uncle Marcus, did you finally have time to come see my uncle?"
"Ever since uncle Eli got hurt, you don't really come to our house anymore." Mira's words made Marcus's expression freeze.
"I've been busy lately." He looked a little awkward. "Since your uncle got hurt there's a pile of things at the unit waiting on me. I happened to have time today, so I came to check on him."
Right. So busy, and still had time to play hero downstairs every night. I kept the thought to myself.
Mira nodded like a sensible child. "Then thank you for working so hard."
Under the child's innocent stare, Marcus ran out of things to say. "I'll go check on Eli."
He walked into the master bedroom with practiced ease — after all, there was a time he almost treated this place as his own.
I tipped my chin at the two kids and they followed right away.
In the master bedroom, the pod's circulation light went bright and dim on the wall. Eli lay under a thin blanket, his face dead white, both arms laid out on top of the covers, lifeless.
Marcus stopped in the doorway and didn't go in.
He just stood there, looking at the man in the pod, wearing an expression I had never seen on his face before — not grief, not guilt. Something calm. The look of a man gazing at a problem he had already taken care of.
Something inside me dropped hard.
The day Eli got hurt, the external mission roster had been tampered with.
Someone had slipped into the dispatch room half an hour before they left — and the duty log for the dispatch room that day was never found.
I'd told myself back then that I was being paranoid. Everyone in the unit told the same story, and the few who came back all told it in the same order, like they'd rehearsed it.
In the end it was Marcus who brought Eli home. And his face that day — something about it hadn't looked right.
I had never dared let myself think too hard in that direction.
But now he was standing in that doorway, looking at Eli with those eyes, and something clicked into place.

MOONLIT CHASE
But no, I had to walk through the park at midnight like an idiot. Now I've seen something I can't unsee—a massive black wolf tearing apart three men, then shifting into the hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on.
Kieran Vaughn. Wealthy lawyer, werewolf, and apparently, he thinks I'm his mate.
Here's the problem: I don't do relationships. I definitely don't do supernatural things. I absolutely don't do rich guys who think they can control my life just because their inner wolf has decided I smell like home.
When hunters start targeting me to get to him, Kieran drags me into his pristine penthouse for "protection." Now I'm living with a man who looks at me like I'm his last meal, whose touch sets my skin on fire, and who's barely holding onto his control.
He says everyone he loves dies. I say that's not my problem except it is because I'm falling for this broken, dangerous man and his beast.
And in his world? Love will get you killed.
Exchanging Vows: The Swapped Wife Is a Top Shaman
GO ON YOUR KNEES, ALPHA.
He was wrong.
Six years ago, Pete Leadsilver had everything an Alpha could want. Power, a respected pack and a future already written for him.
Then he met me.
What began as a game became a mistake I would spend years trying to survive. When I told him I was carrying his child, Pete chose not to believe me. He rejected me, humiliated me, and allowed the people around him to make sure I understood that there was no place for me in his world.
So I disappeared.
I took the secret of my pregnancy with me and built a life far away from the Alpha who had broken me.
Six years later, Pete finds me again. Only this time, he isn't the man with all the power. His pack is dying, his people are running out of time, and I may be the only person capable of saving them.
But I'm no longer the woman Pete remembers. And beside me is a little boy who carries far too much of Pete's face to be a coincidence.
Our reunion should have been about a cure, but instead, it becomes the beginning of a war neither of us saw coming.
Because Pete's greatest danger isn't outside his pack.
It's inside his own family.
Old resentment turns into manipulation. Loyalty becomes betrayal. And the people Pete trusts begin hiding secrets that threaten to destroy everything he's built.
Then someone comes for the people I love.
Suddenly, this is no longer about whether Pete can earn my forgiveness.
It's about whether he can keep me alive.
Whether he can protect the son he never knew existed.
Whether he can uncover the truth before the people closest to him destroy everything he has finally learned to value.
Along the way, we'll lose people we thought would always stand beside us, I'll be forced to confront wounds I've spent six years trying to bury, and the family we're slowly building will be tested in ways neither of us could have imagined.
Because sometimes love isn't the hardest thing to find. Sometimes it's the hardest thing to survive.
Pete once believed power meant never needing anyone and I once believed surviving him meant leaving him behind.
We were both wrong.
Because some bonds refuse to die, some betrayals cut deeper than rejection and some people don't come back into your life to give you a second chance.
They come back to show you exactly what you almost lost.
Pete Leadsilver lost me once.
This time, he'll have to fight to keep the family he never knew he needed.
Love's Deadly Equation
I was sent to her.
To watch her. To protect her. And, when the order comes… to kill her.
My name is Keegan Caffery. I’m the Carter Mafia’s best hitman. I don’t miss. I don’t fail.
At least, I didn’t use to.
I don’t know what it is about her that got to me first—her mouth, her mind, or the way she looks at me like I’m not what she should fear.
I’ve had a gun to her head since I walked into her life.
She knows it.
And she still doesn’t run.
She just watches me back like she’s studying a problem she refuses to call impossible.
She’s the one variable I can’t control.
And God help me… I don’t want to.
I have an order. I have loyalty. I have a trigger.
But every time I imagine it—
I can’t stand it.
Her or me. That’s the math.
It’s a deadly equation I don’t want to solve.
⬥ Maisie ⬥
I’m not ordinary. I stopped pretending long ago.
My name is Maisie Seo. IQ 145. Clinical genius.
Which sounds impressive until you realize what it actually means: I don’t fit anywhere people expect me to.
I see patterns everywhere. Outcomes before they happen. People like equations I’ve already solved.
It gets lonely in a world you’ve already figured out.
So I dull myself down. Smoke the edges off. Pretend, badly, to be the kind of normal that lets people stay.
Then he walked in.
I knew what he was immediately. Dangerous. Intentional. Wrong in all the right ways.
I should be afraid of him.
I keep waiting for that to kick in.
Instead, I’m fascinated.
Because for the first time in my life… I’ve found something I can’t solve.
He is my deadly equation.

One girl, two hockey players, and a heart that was never supposed to feel this much. Will she choose the stepbrother who broke her or the enemy who caught her when she fell?
The Legacy Game

As anonymous invitations summon twelve students into the legendary Legacy Game, alliances fracture, secrets surface, and every challenge brings another deadly truth to light. But the greatest secret isn't who will win.

Rejected By My Family, Desired By The Mafia
While the real heiress struggled to survive, the nanny’s daughter, Talia, was raised in luxury as the beloved jewel of the Laurent family, pampered by Camille’s parents, adored by her three brothers, and even promised to the prestigious Matteo Devereux through a childhood engagement arranged by their grandparents.
Then the truth came out.
Six months ago, Camille was finally brought back to the Laurent family. To protect the family reputation and prove their devotion to their bloodline, the Laurent patriarch transferred 35% of his personal shares into Camille’s name overnight, instantly making her one of the wealthiest heiresses in the country.
It brought anxiety to all the Laurent family. But what they don’t know…is that Camille never needed them.
Behind her elegant smile lies a woman filled with secrets powerful enough to shake the whole family. She's a miraculous healer capable of curing the incurable poisons.
Yet despite everything, her family still chooses Talia.
Every accusation against Talia is forgiven. Every scheme against Camille is brushed aside. Even Matteo, the man who was supposed to be Camille’s fiancé—cannot let go of the woman he always believed belonged by his side.
But while the Laurent family underestimates Camille, another man begins to see exactly who she is.
Dante Moretti.
The ruthless heir of an old-money dynasty. A billionaire CEO worshipped by the public…and the merciless king of a criminal empire hidden beneath the city’s glittering surface. When Dante is poisoned by a rival syndicate with a deadly toxin no doctor can cure, he offers a fortune for anyone who can save him.
Only Camille can. Their deal is simple: she becomes his personal physician, and he gives her anything she wants.
Letters to a Dark Prince
Thrown into Isteros Academy—a world of old money, blood money, and cruel social games—she's an outsider by birth and an afterthought by design. Her sister Solyn is the school's untouchable queen and Mara is her favorite target.
Everyone expects Atreus to treat his fiancée’s scholarship sister like everyone else does—as if she doesn’t matter.
Instead, his dorm room sits directly across from hers, close enough that she can see his light go out at night. Some nights, he climbs the old maintenance trellis just to check on her. He teaches her chess. He shows up exactly when something's gone wrong—and never once asks to be thanked for it.
"Don't fall in love with one piece," he warns her, over a board neither of them treats like a game anymore. "It punishes the person who only sees half of it."
Mara doesn't understand why the boy who's supposed to make her life harder keeps quietly making it easier—not until she realizes the anonymous stranger she's been writing to every week already has a name.
His.
He doesn't know he's writing to her, either.
By the time they find out, it's too late to stop what's already happening. Far too dangerous for anyone to find out.
In an empty studio, in the middle of a rainstorm, she asks him: 'Am I the kind of girl who kisses a boy engaged to my sister?'
He doesn't answer.
So she asks: 'What are we?’
He told her not to fall in love with one piece.
She fell anyway.
And he was never far behind.
