Chapter 1
Marcus Kane's BMW cut through the humid Georgia night as he drove into Millbrook for the first time in fifteen years, the weight of his father's funeral program still in his jacket pocket.
The key stuck in the front door lock, just like it always had. Marcus twisted it twice, pushed hard with his shoulder, and stepped into the suffocating darkness of his childhood home.
"Jesus, Dad."
Law books covered every surface—the coffee table, kitchen counter, even stacked on the stairs. A half-empty bourbon bottle sat next to an open case file on the dining room table. Marcus picked up the glass beside it, still containing a finger of amber liquid.
His father's reading glasses lay folded on top of a legal pad covered in illegible handwriting. In the corner stood a black filing cabinet Marcus had never seen before, secured with a combination lock.
"What the hell were you working on?"
Fifteen years earlier
"You can't just leave, Marcus. This family has obligations."
"Obligations? You mean covering for whatever Uncle Vincent's been doing?"
His father's face had turned red. "You don't understand how things work here."
"I understand enough. I understand you'd rather protect this town's dirty secrets than your own son."
"Those secrets keep food on our table and a roof over our heads."
"Then find another way to eat."
Marcus had walked out that night and never looked back.
The morning sun streamed through dusty windows as Marcus pushed open the door to Kane & Associates. The bell above the door chimed, announcing his arrival to the empty reception area.
"Mr. Marcus? Is that really you?"
Mrs. Ethel Rodriguez emerged from behind the filing cabinets, her gray hair perfectly styled despite the early hour. She'd been his father's secretary for thirty years and looked exactly the same—sharp eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses and a no-nonsense expression.
"Hello, Mrs. Rodriguez."
"I'm so sorry about your father. He was a good man."
"Was he?"
She studied his face. "He was complicated. Like all the Kane men."
"I'm not staying long. Just need to settle his affairs and—"
"There's unfinished business."
Marcus paused. "What kind of business?"
"Two cases. Both urgent. Your father was supposed to meet with the clients this week."
"I'm not taking any new clients."
Mrs. Rodriguez pulled two thick folders from her desk. "Daniel Russo. Nineteen years old. Murder charges. And Jake Thompson. Seventeen. Arson."
"Get them other lawyers."
"There are no other lawyers. Not for cases like these."
Something in her tone made Marcus stop. "What do you mean?"
"Your father didn't tell me everything, but he was scared. Said these boys were innocent and someone powerful wanted them to go down for crimes they didn't commit."
Marcus stared at the folders. "Who?"
"He never said. But the night before he died, he told me if anything happened to him, I should give these cases to you and tell you to check behind his law degree."
"Behind his what?"
"The framed degree in his office. He said you'd understand."
The Millbrook Diner hadn't changed in fifteen years. Same cracked vinyl booths, same grease-stained menu, same smell of bacon and regret. Marcus was halfway through his coffee when a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Well, well. The prodigal nephew returns."
Vincent Kane slid into the booth across from him. Still handsome at sixty-five, with silver hair and a politician's smile that never reached his eyes.
"Uncle Vincent."
"Sorry about your daddy. Heart attack's a terrible way to go."
"So I heard."
Vincent signaled the waitress for coffee. "You planning to stay long?"
"Just long enough to close the practice."
"Good. That's good." Vincent's smile widened. "No point stirring up old ghosts, is there?"
"What ghosts?"
"Oh, you know how small towns are. Lots of history. Lots of secrets. Sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs lie."
The waitress brought Vincent's coffee. He took a sip and leaned forward.
"Your daddy was a smart man. Knew when to push and when to back down. I hope you inherited that wisdom."
"Are you threatening me?"
Vincent laughed, but it sounded hollow. "Threatening? Marcus, you're family. I'm just offering some friendly advice."
"Which is?"
"Settle your daddy's affairs and go back to Atlanta. This town isn't for you. Never was."
Vincent stood, dropped a five-dollar bill on the table, and squeezed Marcus's shoulder. "Take care of yourself, nephew. And remember—some stones are better left unturned."
Back in his father's office, Marcus stared at the framed law degree hanging behind the desk. Harvard Law School, Class of 1978. He lifted it off the wall and found a small safe built into the wall, painted the same color as the surrounding wood.
The combination was his birthday—his father had never forgotten, even after fifteen years of silence.
Inside were two thick manila folders marked "D.R." and "J.T." and a handwritten note in his father's shaky script:
Marcus—If you're reading this, I'm dead and these boys need help. They're innocent, but someone wants them to pay for crimes they didn't commit. The mill holds the answers. Trust no one in this town except Mrs. Rodriguez. The truth about Millbrook goes deeper than you know. —Dad
Marcus opened the first folder. Daniel Russo. Accused of murdering his girlfriend, Emma Caldwell. A rich kid who swore he was innocent.
The second folder: Jake Thompson. Charged with burning down the old textile mill. A poor kid from the trailer park who claimed he was being framed.
Two boys. Two crimes. Two lies.
And somewhere in this godforsaken town, someone who wanted them both to burn.
Marcus closed the files and reached for his phone. Mrs. Rodriguez answered on the first ring.
"Set up meetings with both clients. And Mrs. Rodriguez?"
"Yes, Mr. Marcus?"
"Cancel my return flight to Atlanta."

After the Affair: Falling into a Billionaire's Arms
From first crush to wedding vows, George Capulet and I had been inseparable. But in our seventh year of marriage, he began an affair with his secretary.
On my birthday, he took her on vacation. On our anniversary, he brought her to our home and made love to her in our bed...
Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.
George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.
His deceptions continued until the day the divorce was finalized. I threw the papers in his face: "George Capulet, from this moment on, get out of my life!"
Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.
When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.
"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"
George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"
"I'm afraid that's impossible."
Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
Oops, Wrong Girl to Bully
My back hit the desk. Pain exploded through my skull.
"Girls like you don't get to dream about guys like Kai." Bella's breath was hot on my face. "You don't get to write pathetic love letters."
She shoved me again. Harder.
"Maybe if you weren't such a desperate little—"
I fell. My head cracked against the corner.
Warmth trickled down my neck. Blood.
Their laughter turned to gasps.
The door slammed.
I tried to stand. Couldn't. The room was spinning, fading to black.

A Lesson in Magic
Rise of the Banished She-Wolf
That roar stole my eighteenth birthday and shattered my world. My first shift should have been glory—blood turned blessing into shame. By dawn they'd branded me "cursed": cast out by my pack, abandoned by family, stripped of my nature. My father didn't defend me—he sent me to a forsaken island where wolfless outcasts were forged into weapons, forced to kill each other until only one could leave.
On that island I learned the darkest edges of humanity and how to bury terror in bone. Countless times I wanted to surrender—dive into the waves and never surface—but the accusing faces that haunted my dreams pushed me back toward something colder than survival: revenge. I escaped, and for three years I hid among humans, collecting secrets, learning to move like a shadow, sharpening patience into precision—becoming a blade.
Then, under a full moon, I touched a bleeding stranger—and my wolf returned with a violence that made me whole. Who was he? Why could he wake what I'd thought dead?
One thing I know: now is the time.
I have waited three years for this. I will make everyone who destroyed me pay—and take back everything that was stolen from me.
