Chapter 1

Ayla

I woke up with a gasp when I felt ice cold water being poured on me. My parents glared down at me with disgusted scowls on their faces. My entire body was drenched and after being without a blanket throughout the night, I was extremely cold.

“Get up you disappointment you have to make breakfast for the pack” my mother said. I couldn’t even call her that. I had lost that privilege when I presented as a weak useless Omega. It is a shocking thing how one could go from having friends, the love of her family, everything, simply because of what I presented as. A phenomenon that was out of my control, I was a runt, weak useless.

“Yes madam” I said with my head bowed.

“Let’s go honey, it stinks in here” my dad said and they both left. I used to have a room, but after I presented as an Omega, I lost that as well and was sent to live in the attic. No bed, just a ratty mat and a worn-out quilt to cover myself with. Looking out of the window, I realized the sun wasn’t even out yet. I don’t have a phone so I couldn’t even tell what time it was.  In my opinion the Blood Fang Pack was so backward, still abusing pack members for their ranking, it was disgusting, but I just had to stay strong.in a matter of days, I’ll turn eighteen and I’ll be able to find my mate. He’d love me and save me from this life.

I quickly poured water on my face with the little water I had saved away in a little basin. As the runt of the pack, I didn’t even have the privilege of having a bathroom. I could only fetch water from the stream to fill up my basin. After washing my face I changed into my work cloths which was a very tattered dress. Most of my clothes were threadbare and a mess but this was the worst of them. I couldn’t afford to use all my clothes for work, they were already bad enough.

I got to work making sure that the puck was already speak and span. The other Omegas were already in the kitchen making breakfast. Even though they were a few other Omega’s in the pack, I was lower than the low, and that was simply because not only was I a scrawny Omega, but I didn’t even have a wolf. I was bullied before quite alright but everything got about a million times worse a few years ago when I stopped being able to turn. The only sounds that could be heard in the pack house was the hustling and bustling from us Omegas doing our work. It’s pathetic, the rest of the pack was sleeping while we were slaving away.

Once I was done making sure that the entire pack house was spick and span my body ached terribly. But I couldn’t stop, not now, the sun had begun to rise already, and the other wolves were about to wake up. I quickly rushed to the kitchen to help out with breakfast.

“Quickly you useless girl, set the table” Quincy snapped at me “Yes Quincy” I said and rushed to do as she has told. Quincy was the head of the Omega’s and she hatred my guts the most, for reasons that I did not even understand.

I quickly set up the table and I heard my name from the kitchen to come and get the foods. Footsteps were already coming down the stairs, we had to move faster.

“Eww, don’t touch me you disgusting girl” One of the omegas cringed when I passed, but that was the least of my concerns. If the food was not all set before the Alpha’s son got to the table, my life will be royally over. The Alpha of the Blood Fang Pack was getting old, not quite how he used to be and his son, Alpha Darius was already Alpha in practice, he would be officially sworn in after the Blood Moon event, when he finds his mate.

Quincy stacked as many foods as she could on my hands and sent me out “go, quickly”. I wobbled as I walked, I couldn’t even see and that is when I bumped into someone, sending everything toppling to the ground. I was dead.

“How fucking dare you!!!!”

I quickly scrambled to my knees. “I’m really sorry” I said head bowed. I felt my hair being gripped, so hard that I was definitely sure that I’d be losing some strands of my hair by the time this was all over. I was face to face with two wickedly angry eyes. Oh, moon goddess. Of all people on earth it had to be Marlene Norris. She was soon to be head of warriors and also Alpha Darius longtime girlfriend. To be exact they were on again and off again but that wasn’t the point they were on at the moment and I had just made the biggest mistake of my life.

“You disgusting fucking Omega… Do you know how much this costs?” she fumed “I am really sorry”- she backhanded me hard across the face. Blood filled my mouth because of the sheer force she used. By now wolves had gathered around us getting their feel of the spectacle.

She pushed me to the round kicking my stomach continuously. Everything hurt, but I couldn’t cry these vultures were already here and once I cry, they’d be here to prey on that and besides I was already pathetic enough, crying would just make everything so much worse. I could hear it, vividly, every demeaning word, every insult thrown my way, every laughter. Those saying that I was better dead than alive, that I was a waste of oxygen. Marlene kept hitting me, I felt my ribs crack but she didn’t. She dragged me up to a kneeling position again and slapped me spitting on me.

“You fucking mistake why don’t you just die it’ll do us all a fucking favor and just die!!!”

She elongated her claws and just then I though this is it. This is how I die. Unknown, unloved, useless. I didn’t even get to meet my mate.

Suddenly heavy footsteps came marching down the stairs

“What is the meaning of all this fucking ruckus?”

My parents and Gilbert were stunned. They rushed to have me sign the voluntary donation form, afraid I’d change my mind.

Some days later, they sent me to the operating room.

Dad said, "Yvonne will finally be saved. We're so proud of you."

Mom said, "After the surgery, we'll make it up to you."

Gilbert looked tenderly at Yvonne and said, "When you're better, where should we travel?"

What they didn't know was that the day I agreed, I'd just received my diagnosis, stage four cancer. Three months to live.

As I lay on the cold operating table, as the anesthesia began to take effect, I only wanted to know one thing:

If I die on this operating table, will they regret it?

When kidnappers grabbed us, I used my body as a shield. They beat me until something inside me ruptured. I was dying from internal bleeding, but no one could tell.

My parents wouldn't even look at me. "This is your fault! None of this would've happened if it weren't for you!"

"Get downstairs and apologize to your sister. If you can't, pack your things and get out."

Zachary didn't hesitate. "Let Valerie go," he said.

He actually chose to save his sister-in-law! In that moment, even the baby in my belly seemed to stop kicking.

Later, they locked me in the basement. Drugs to delay labor were pumped into my veins over and over. Zachary wanted to save the "firstborn son" status for his sister-in-law's child.

"Zachary," I whispered into the phone, "our child... can't wait any longer."

When the doctor explained the surgical risks and potential complications, I smiled and nodded my understanding.

My parents said I'd finally learned what sisterly love meant.

Even Allen, who'd always been cold to me, held my hand gently and said, "The surgery's safe. You're so healthy, nothing will go wrong. When you recover, I'll take you to Hawaii."

But they don't know that no matter how the surgery goes, I won't be around to celebrate.

Because I just got my own test results—I have terminal brain cancer. I'm going to die anyway.

Heartbroken, I tricked him into signing divorce papers.

George remained unconcerned, convinced I would never leave him.

Only then did panic flood his eyes as he begged me to stay.

When his calls bombarded my phone later that night, it wasn't me who answered, but my new boyfriend Julian.

"Don't you know," Julian chuckled into the receiver, "that a proper ex-boyfriend should be as quiet as the dead?"

George seethed through gritted teeth: "Put her on the phone!"

"I'm afraid that's impossible."

Julian dropped a gentle kiss on my sleeping form nestled against him. "She's exhausted. She just fell asleep."
